Welcome to my stop on Black Tide's Book Tour for Hell's Beginning by John T.M. Herres. Hell's Beginning is one of those spine chillers that will have you biting your tongue the next time you think about trying to get in the last word. You just never know...that person could be a killer you just barely escaped. 

 Hell’s Beginnings by John T.M. Herres is an 80s slasher film that meets the modern era with a supernatural twist. We hope you’re not squeamish because this book? Yeah, it’s bloody. You’re going to love it.

Hell’s Beginnings is a stand-alone horror novel by author John T.M. Herres. This book lures readers of horror in with a cover that is sure to pique many an interest. You’ll first notice an individual standing in the rain. He’s wearing a gray hoodie with the hood pulled to hide his face. His hands appear empty, but that doesn’t mean that you should underestimate this guy by any means. This character appears innocuous enough, but what lies deep within him makes him more than a force to be reckoned with.

Hell’s Beginning starts off in a rather dramatic fashion. Someone has already been taken captive, and she’s found herself in a bad way. You’re going to be thinking “Well, do we get to find out how she got to be in the predicament she’s in?” The answer? Of course, you will! What you’ll learn? That maybe...just maybe...she should have kept her mouth shut. But...alas, pride is a terrible sin...and this case? It seals her fate in the worst way possible.

Hell’s Beginning doesn’t take long to throw a lot of gore and horror in your face. You’re going to be taken along for the ride as this mysterious main character abducts Sharon and hauls her off to force her to experience unthinkable terrors. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a story if we didn’t get some backstory on Sharon as well.

The first half of the story focuses heavily on this mysterious bad guy who is out to have his pound of flesh. You get the sense that there is a true darkness about him, but author Herres does an excellent job of keeping the true depths hidden in shadows. It’s not until later on in the story that you’re going to get a glimpse.

Readers who enjoy gorey horror are going to devour this book. The first half especially is heavy on the gore factor. The first half of Hell’s Beginning reads much like one would expect an 80s or even 90s slasher horror movie to play out.

In Hell’s Beginning, you’re getting the woman who unwittingly provokes a killer. You wonder exactly how it is all going to play out for her. Is it going to be a long drawn-out torture session? Or does author Herres have something more insidious in store for us readers? And Sharon, too, of course. Well, one thing is for sure and that is that heads are going to roll.

Hell’s Beginning brings the horror in spades as the chapters transition between the killer (still shrouded in mystery) and other characters who will soon find themselves trapped in his orbit. The killer in Hell’s Beginning is literally an equal-opportunity killer. Author Herres throws all the fresh meat into the grinder and turns a few chapters in this book into a literal free-for-all.

To be fair and honest with you, there is some content in this book that even we were taken aback by. Why and what was it? Well, it wasn’t the gore or the violence. No, it was when a young underage girl gets drawn into the mix and appears to be heading toward a sexual situation with a much older guy. Those particular scenes were flirting with disaster by dancing the line, but author Herres keeps things relatively above board...barely.

Are there other sexual situations in this book? Yes, but they all happen off-page. You’re given a hint that something is about to transpire, but you’ll have to use your imagination for those scenes.

Just when you think that Hell’s Beginning is going to be just a full-blown slasher story, author Herres says “Sit tight. There’s more.”

We know what you’re thinking...more? What more could there be? The body count is mounting, the final two are here. Where can the story go from here? Well, wait for it. Hell’s Beginning is going to take a twist that you’re not going to see coming, but it is absolutely going to glue you to the pages.

Hell’s Beginning starts out slasher style, but it morphs into something more that helps to better explain why the killer is an “equal opportunist” when it comes to those encroaching on his temporary lair.

The pace of Hell’s Beginning, even from the beginning, is pretty good. It moves at a decent pace and will keep readers engaged to find out who’s going to make it and who won’t. But when the big reveal comes along the storyline really begins to pick up the pace. It transitions into a race against the clock in more ways than one.

Also, author Herres begins to weave in more of a supernatural twist to help guide the characters in this story, because without that guidance? Well, things could have gotten a lot worse. For sure Hell’s Beginning is packed with twists, turns, surprises, and drama that you won’t see coming.

About the Author

John T. M. Herres was born May 26, 1965, to a military family.

His father served in the Air Force, and the family moved around a great deal during John's younger years – which meant a constant change of circumstances.

John tries to use these experiences to add richness and realism to his writing.

Influenced by such authors as Robert E. Howard, Stephen King, Dean R. Koontz, and James Patterson, his genre of choice became action/fantasy-adventure populated by barbarians inspired by Conan, et al, set in rich, exotic landscapes, though he dabbles in other genres.

John's writing has emerged and matured into works with three-dimensional characters, action sequences that read like a movie scene with great visuals for the reader, and plot lines that pull the reader deep into both the action and the psyche of his heroes.

John has written several poems and is dabbling with a sci-fi story, as well as some short stories in the horror genre.

Having lived in the Great state of Texas a majority of his life, he currently resides in Mississippi. His works-in-progress include "Tales of The Barbarian" and "Challenge of The Velah" which he is hoping to have published at some point.

Recently, a few of his writings have been accepted for publication by J Ellington Ashton and HellBound Books.

The Story of Evil Vol 1 Review Spotlight

We're excited to share with you today....The Story of Evil: Heroes of the Siege! Author Tony Johnson has created quite the epic with this story and series. If you haven't read it yet...you are in for a treat! 

 The Story of Evil: Heroes of the Siege is the first volume in Tony Johnson’s The Story of Evil series, and if you love an action packed story then this is the one for you.

Heroes of the Siege draws you in with a cover featuring a knight dressed for a joust or even possibly battle going full tilt. Decked in reds with blue accents the image is enough to excite you to witness the fight at hand for yourself. But what you don’t know is the chaos that is waiting to erupt...and that will spare no man, woman or child.

The Story of Evil: Heroes if the Siege sets the stage with a prologue that outlines the creation of Element, the planet our characters will call home. We get an interesting story of creation followed by a power struggle between two gods: Alazar and Zebulon. Cue the rise of a five headed dragon. Yes, people...five heads. Can we all say hydra? Well, the good news is...the heads don’t grow back. LOL! Once one head goes...it’s a done deal.

While the evil dragon, Draviakhan, is slain, it doesn’t mean that all is now well. King Zoran, the defeater of Draviakhan, reigns, but age is catching up to him. Meanwhile evil is brewing in his own kingdom, and chaos is about to be reigned down on the innocent once more.

Enter Steve! The warrior who will be representing Celestial in the tournament. He’s excited, and the people are excited as well. Steve is one of several characters who will take the stage in this beginning story. Steve is 19 years-old. He has no idea that this day of the tournament will be one of the longest and hardest for him.

Then meet Karia. She’s half human, half elf. She’s alone in this world, but she’s doing her best to survive and get by. She encounters her own problems when she crosses paths with a monster in the forest. This is a sign of things to come. Karia has repeatedly voiced how humans are taking too much by over hunting, but no one listens. Now, she faces the problem head on for herself.

Then there is Ty, an Elf. Ty is depicted as the good looking carefree character who believes in living life to the fullest. Why? Well, the reason for that will be revealed soon enough. All we’ll say is that...family history as a way of repeating itself. So the question becomes...will Ty follow in history’s footsteps? Or will he finally break that chain?

Heroes of the Siege is a page-turner from beginning to end. This story reads like it is shorter than it actually is. You’re going to become so engrossed in this story that it’s going to be you “blink” and you’ve reached the end. LOL! You’ll be looking around like...”where is the rest of the story at?!” While volume one may come to a close quickly, the good news is that book two is available to go and grab up right now.

Author Johnson knows how to put together a story. We’ll say that. You get dynamic characters and gripping scenes. When the chaos and fighting breaks out with the surprise attack the drama and the hits just keep coming. Grab a breath when you can because the author is not going to give you many opportunities. Trust us on this one.

Story of Evil: Heroes of the Siege is going to be a must read for many a lover of fantasy novel. You’re going to get monsters, monsters and more monsters. You’re going to get good monsters who side with the humans, elves and dwarves. Then you’re going to have the monsters who side with evil. One aspect that we love is the uniqueness and layers that the author gives readers with this story.

You’re not getting “mindless” creatures in the monsters who just attack because they can. You get creatures that can think and rationalize. You can really expect a lot of grit and drama that will play out on the page.

You will also see a lot of heartbreak and loss as chaos breaks out with this surprise attack. Author Johnson doesn’t shy away from giving readers exactly what they will be looking for when it comes to this story. You are going to get the details, not gorey details, but you will see characters go from living and vibrant to be another tragic loss in the face of a cruel and unrelenting war machine.

Steve, Ty and Karia will truly shine in this story as they each manage to escape death more than once. You can prepare yourself to be pulled to the edge of your seat multiple times as the question of who will survive and who will fall. As the story moves closer to a close the hint of a bigger story begins to unfold. A prophecy that hints at something more. A king who carries a secret, but before he can give any clue as to what it is…

Readers who hate cliffhangers...for this series, you’re going to be willing to move past it. LOL! Why do we say this? Because the rest of the series is available to you. You’re literally going to want to sit down and binge read these books, because yes. That’s how good it is. You’re getting dragons, direwolves, gryphons, phoenixes, orcs, ogres, giants, elves, and so much more.

Heroes of the Siege is a must read and we cannot wait to find out what happens next.

The Healer Academy Review

 The Healer Academy is the first book in Marinda Misra’s Healer Academy series. This series will depict the story of a young girl as she discovers exactly who she is. She’s been shunned all her life and told by the people of her village that she’s “cursed.” However, that is all a lie, and the truth? The truth is going to come out and it is going to be something truly shocking.

The Healer Academy piques readers interest with a beautiful cover. The cover shows the close up face of a young girl with violet eyes. Behind her are trees while in her hands are glowing blue lights floating all around her. All of these are hints and clues of what the reader can expect to find in this story.

The Healer Academy tells the story of young girl named Kailin. Kailin has been raised all her life in a small village near the Holy Forest. Her life hasn’t been easy due to her heritage. The villagers believe that she is a “bastard” child and that her mother had a child out of wedlock. So they treat her with disdain and shame her at every turn. The only person that she appears to have is her aunt Beredith. But Kailin’s opportunity is coming – with the entrance exam to the Healer Academy.

The Healer Academy gradually draws readers in with hints of Kailin’s capabilities. She’s a truly capable healer on her own thanks to her aunt’s skill. While Kailin may be skilled, she is, unfortunately, prone to a touch of panic. This will cause an issue during the exam, and her one chance to advance to another level in life...is going to be taken away from...based one...simple...mistake.

Kailin’s quest is unfortunately going to be derailed, but the chance won’t be completely gone. Instead, her aunt will push for her to go with a Healer. But instead of being a student, Kailin will be a servant. This is not the way that Kailin had hoped to reach the Healer Academy, but she will discover more and more as time goes by.

The Healer Academy is an engaging YA fantasy novel that pulls readers in with hints of magic here and there throughout the story. This book wouldn’t be classified as “high fantasy” where magic is “essential” to the storyline. The Healer Academy is more of a “low fantasy” novel at this time. Who is to say what the future will hold when it comes to the magic levels, but for now, this is the case.

Kailin is a multi-faceted character. She shows some good character development throughout the story. She goes from being a scared child to a strong young woman a little bit at a time. There are some in the story who could seriously care less about her. She’s a Peasant girl who has come to the Academy to be a servant. Simple. Cut and dry. Right? But she’s more than that and capable of much more.

Kailin seems to have a tendency to get herself into trouble, but each time it leads to something more. She experiences various situations and in the process learns new things about not just herself, but the powers that she possesses. One thing is for certain – Kailin doesn’t truly want these powers. Why? Well, they scare her. Once you dive into this story you’ll get a better understanding as to why she fears them.

There are moments in The Healer Academy that Kailin will probably try your patience. LOL! She’s very vocal at times, and despite the fact that she is supposed to be a servant she hardly behaves like one. Kailin is not alone in this story. She makes friends with some of the other servants, and a girl that she grew up with goes from friend...to former friend. That “friendship” falling apart is rather sad to witness.

The overall storyline is engaging and is sure to keep readers page-turning as we wonder what is going to happen to Kailin. She’s made it to the Healer Academy, but she’s a servant. She’s working there instead of having the opportunity to study and learn more. Add in that she has caught the eye of a “notorious” Noble known for and that alone spells trouble for her. Why exactly? Well, you’ll have to read to find out.

The Healer Academy has it’s twists and surprises packed into places where you’re not going to expect them. Author Misra reminds readers that the peace that is found in this story is tenuous at best. War is brewing, and the land that Kailin lives in is preparing bit by bit. Men below the station of Noble are being rounded up, and the lower people...are beginning to fight back.

The story doesn’t simply stay at the Healer Academy though. While the majority of it is, the author takes readers to Kailin’s home, and then to another place that is supposed to be neutral ground. Kailin is really going to have her hands full with all of the drama that she will be experiencing throughout this story.

Hoping for some romance? Well, you’re definitely going to get that. Since this is a YA novel, the romance will be kept clean. There will be some hints of “more” between some characters, but there won’t be anything that takes place on page. As for anything happening between Kailin and any boy, things will be kept to just kissing for now. Who knows what the future will bring as the story continues to progress.

The end of this first book doesn’t have a cliffhanger. So, for readers who absolutely hate those...smile. LOL! The Healer Academy comes to a nice neat close with all seeming to be well with Kailin for the time being. Everything is far from perfect, but for the moment she’s happy and things are looking up. Who’s to say what will happen in book two.

Bloodwoven Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for Bloodwoven! This fantasy novel details the story of a man who begins to question the teachings and his beliefs. Where will these questions lead him and what path will he end up on? 

 

 Bloodwoven is the first book in G.J. Terral’s The Binding Tenets trilogy. This fantasy novelThis fantasy novel will detail the story of our main character, Lin, as he goes from being an Escorter for the Ferrucium, but all of that is about to change with the stroke of a knife. Lin will find himself on a path that was, in the beginning, not of his choosing. But if he wishes to return to the life he once knew...he’ll have to make a choice to end the life of a man that he once thought was an ally.

Bloodwoven piques the reader’s interest with a cover that depicts the main character, Lin, holding a small crying child. In the background are a ship on the left-hand side, and some buildings on the right. The impression given is that Lin is going to find himself in possession of a small child. What is the significance of the child? Does the child hold some importance to the storyline? Or are they simply a side character to it all?

Well, to find the answers to these questions you’ll have to take a chance on this story dear reader, and find them out for yourself. But it is a story worth diving into and learning more about the characters you will discover inside.

Bloodwoven by author Terral details Lin’s story as he escorts a pair of his brethren to a location of their choosing. Lin has no idea why Aenum and his partner, Margaret wish to reach a particular destination, but what the following events set in motion will push Lin onto a different path than what he had originally foreseen for himself.

Bloodwoven is an interesting fantasy novel that pits one character’s beliefs against the things that he experiences. Lin’s beliefs are frequently challenged throughout this story as he has been taught that to be “stitched” is a sin. Something worthy of being killed over. But what about if it is done without your consent? What if it is done to save the life of someone who would otherwise die?

Well, apparently, the rules don’t care. If you are “stitched” then you are viewed as “untethered.” Someone who has gone rogue and that you have “desecrated” the Great Tapestry woven by the original Weavers. Some of those deemed “Untethered” are truly dangerous. There are many scenes depicting some of their heinous acts towards innocents. The question that will haunt you throughout this story will be...Why? Why do they commit these horrific acts? What is the driving force for them to do this?

Well, to be fair, this situation with the “Untethered” is just one aspect of the story. The driving force that starts things off, besides an attack...is a murder. Lin blames himself for the death, and Aenum, would have him believe a false truth. But there’s one thing about truth...and that is it will always come to light.

Lin is the main character and primary focus of this story. Author Terral works throughout the story to develop Lin as a character. Lin tends to resist at times because he wants to hold to the teachings that he has been taught. His life being saved by a woman by the name of Tylle is something that he has struggled with for quite some time. However, she could have allowed him to die...which is what Aenum basically left him to...death. Granted, Aenum had a small child with him, but still...he, Aenum, should have done more.

What you’ll notice as you read this book is that Aenum is typically quick to start some mess, and then when things get rough? He’s the first to bail and leave everyone else to handle what he kicked up. Of course, once the enemy is on their back, or backfoot, then expect Aenum to come sweeping in and to deliver the final blow.

You’re really going to get the sense that Aenum is a snake. No, seriously, this guy is sneaky, and as the story goes deeper, you’re going to see that he has an agenda. Also, Aenum doesn’t care who gets hurt along the way...as long as he gets what he wants.

There is quite a bit of magic at play in this story. You get it from the beginning with Lin and others weaving magic and utilizing it to fight and defend. Readers get a nice dynamic of magic users in this story. There isn’t much of a difference in how the magic is used, but the characters who utilize it vary. Which is where the uniqueness comes from.

Bloodwoven will read like a quest for revenge, and on one hand...it is. You’ll wonder if the revenge will even be realized because of how things pan out throughout the story. Of course, you’ll need to wait and see where things go. It’ll be worth the wait to see how it all unfolds. But be prepared for lots of twists and turns.

As this book is part of a trilogy expect the ending of this book...to be just the beginning. There will be a brief resolution, but author Terral makes sure to leave the door open for more to come. One “loose end” may be tied up, but a bigger and more dangerous threat is looming. How will Lin and those he has come to care about fare? Well, we’ll just have to wait to find out.

Bloodwoven is a truly interesting story, and it has a nice moderate pace with some truly engaging moments that will sweep you away deeper into the story. Readers who enjoy well-developed fantasy novels will enjoy this book.

Soul Cage is book one in author Shulz’s Soulbreaker series. We think you’ll agree that author Shulz has struck gold with this book. You’re going to get danger, epic fights, tons of magic, dynamic characters, and twists that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Readers who enjoy flawed characters will absolutely devour this book as it is packed with characters who struggle with who they are, what they are, and the power that weighs on them. Literally. Carrying the souls of thousands is no easy thing, and if you’re not strong enough? They will break you...and destroy everything you love.

The first thing that readers are going to notice is this book’s cover. Depicted on the cover is a character on a swirling green background, clothes tattered, chest cracked and broken open with souls appearing to pour out. This book’s cover gives readers just a glimpse of what awaits them in this book. It’s enough to whet the appetite and have you eager for more. With the lines “Souls are the currency. Death is the price.” That’s sure to spur more than a reader or two to go and grabthis book.

When you dive into this book author Shulz drops readers into a scenario already rife with danger. An attack is being launched, fear is rampant, and death appears to be knocking on their door. You will meet Myddrin, one of the main characters in this story will follow. Myddrin is a humble teacher at this point in the story, but all of that is about to change. Lives are under threat. Their souls are at risk of being lost and absorbed by their killers. But if those sworn to protect, the Knights of Aen, can hold off the threat sweeping down on them, the Skullsworn, they just might stand a chance.

Unfortunately, while Myddrin makes it out alive, it’s in this fight he loses something important to him. In the process, he is also burdened with a huge amount of power. It’s a twist of fate that this power should become his, but his it does become, and while it may not be immediate he will one day be called upon to utilize that power to help save a kingdom.

Soul Cage gives readers multiple POV from several different characters. Don’t worry it won’t be a huge number of characters that you cycle through as you read this novel. You’re going to get Myddrin, a young boy you’ll meet at the beginning by the name of Will and a young woman who is struggling with her quest for power, Tvora.

Will reads like a boy on the spectrum. We won’t classify him as anything specific, but that’s how he reads. Will is a character who struggles. From the way this book unfolds, the fight that he survived really took a toll on him, but there’s more going on than meets the eye. Just wait for it though, because more will be revealed about Will as the story unfolds.

As Soul Cage unfolds Will will prove to be a challenging character. He has lots of struggles. He wants to be a Knight of Aen, but because of his differences he’s looked down upon. Will is even bullied by some of his own peers because of his differences. It’s sad to see. Though, he doesn’t make it easy for himself either. The fact that he takes things so literally makes it a challenge for people to talk to him.

The beauty of Soul Cage is that as the book unfolds and the story progresses, Will gradually grows as a character. It’s not something that will happen quickly, so be prepared to exercise some patience with him. It may get a touch frustrating at times, but that’s one way of knowing that you’ve got yourself a good book.

Tvora is another interesting character. She’s soul-broken. What does that mean you ask? Well, we could tell you, but where would the fun be in that when you could simply grab this book and dive in? It’ll be more enthralling to discover the truth behind her for yourself. Her magic is truly strong, but with the amount of souls she carries...it’s not surprising.

What makes Tvora truly unique are the fact that she carries three companions with her. You’ll meet two of them rather quickly as part of Tvora’s quest is to gain enough power to allow them to “exist” for longer outside of herself. Tvora isn’t a “black” character to be deemed “evil” or a “white” character to be deemed “good.” No, Tvora is more of a gray character. Flawed, struggling even, but she still has some morals.

Soul Cage is packed with tension, drama, and danger. You get chapters that shift between the three main characters and each lends their various perspectives. You’ll see the danger unfolding not just in the camp of the enemy, but even at home where you’d think some should be safe.

Author Shulz creates a dynamic tapestry of a storyline that will keep readers page-turning to find out what happens next. Hoping for some epic battle scenes? Get excited, because those are definitely included in this book.

As Soul Cage draws to a close, don’t let the final chapters fool you. While things may unfold a particular way, don’t allow author Shulz lull you into a state of complacency. Remember, Soul Cage is just the beginning. Of course, there are going to be a couple final surprises, and the ending? Brace yourself. Trust us on this one. As we were reading the final paragraphs of this book...our final thought was “Oh shit.” LOL! One thing is for sure...you’re going to be looking forward to book two.

Readers who enjoy a gripping fantasy novel then you’re not going to want to miss out on checking out Soul Cage. You’re going to get a dynamic cast of characters, epic drama, and so much more. For us? This book is a must read and earns a place in our top 10 for 2024.

Satan Rides Your Daughter is a dynamic collection of hellish stories that depict scenes that, in some cases, will be hard pressed to be removed from your brain. From stories about a strange wicker basket that a boy's father brings back from the war overseas, to an "innocuous" looking goat statue that sits in a garden...that must NEVER be moved, to a "Groundhog Day" style story of a Mad Max style road race/battle.

Let's cut to the chase shall we? There's sure to be a story in here for everyone. Each story is unique, and while not all will be someone's cup of blood, there will be sure to be one that draws you in and pushes you to learn more about the particular author who wrote that story. 

Satan Rides Your Daughter is an interesting collection of horror stories. The first one that we read centered around a young boy. His father has returned from the war (recent times) and you immediately get the sense that the war broke this man. I mean, he comes home, strips it off at his "Welcome Home" party and immediately burns it in front of everyone. Yep, cue jaw-drop moment for us for sure! 

Talk about...wow! But what is curious are the items that he brought back with him. A wicker basket, a pipe, and a couple other strange items. You can't help but wonder...is there something special about them? Well, the focus of the story will shift to the basket. So make sure you pay attention. You can bet that the boy, the main character of this story, will. 

One of my favorite aspects of this story, is how the author draws me in. The basket seems innocuous enough, but the child...he senses what we do not. He senses the evil emanating from that basket and it when it becomes too much? He leaves the room. But fate is a fical thing and it won't be long before the boy hits a snag...that should end his life. 

Warren, the boy, ends up with a close encounter that leaves him in-debted. What is going to happen from there? Well, you'll jus have to read to find out! LOL! 

The Pit and the Basket is an interesting story for sure, and for us, one of the standouts for this anthology. Our only poke of dissent towards it is some of the actions that Warren takes later on. He strikes a deal, but then we don't really get to find out the aftermath. He must become a murderer, but one particular murder is hinted at being particularly gruesome. We wanted details. Unfortunately, all we get is a reaction from a side character, and nothing more. It's rather disappointing. 

Another story that really stuck out for us, is The Goat. No, not the Greatest of All Times. No, it's actually about a goat. Sorta. Curious? Good. LOL! When we first started reading this story, we really didn't know what to make of it. 

It starts off sounding like the typical, "child left home, doesn't want to return because of....insert whatever reason they chalk up." Well, that's part of the story, but wait for it, because there's more. 

For us, the backstory that comes is truly fascinating. It is definitely going to give some "Drag Me to Hell" vibes and we loved it! Of course, if you're hoping to know EVERYTHING that happens with the character in this story? Well, you're going to be left waiting. Okay, more like the author will encourage you to use your imagination and conjure up what you believe happens next. 

Some of the stories moving forward are hit and miss for us. Some just don't draw us in, others the pacing leaves something to be desired. But the deeper you in...it's like that's where the meat shows up. The good stuff people! Brace yourself to be sucked in and then to be the one sucking these stories dry as you devour them whole and dig deeper to find the marrow...(as in learn more about the authors who wrote them). 

There are some deliciously hellish stories to be found in this anthology, so if you're a fan of horror be sure to grab this collection and dive in!

The Shadows of Wren Review Spotlight

Welcome to the tour for The Shadows of Wren by Jen Bliton. Book one of The Light in the Shadows series! Read on for more details!

The Shadows of Wren is the first book in the Light in the Shadows series and this romantic fantasy promises some interesting elements and aspects along with some truly fantastic creatures. Prepare for some quick romance, but if you’re hoping for some steamy moments...that’s where the slow-burn is going to kick in. So try to exercise some patience.

The Shadows of Wren gifts readers with a gorgeous cover that teases you with the promise of an engaging storyline with beautiful flowers dripping and surrounded by shadows. Does this cover truly give readers insight in what to expect of this storyline? No, however it does draw you to the book and the promise of what it holds inside.

The Shadows of Wren is a slow to moderately paced novel. It is the first in the Light in the Shadows series and immediately introduces readers to the main character of the story, Wren. Wren is a Shadow mage. This a secret that only a handful of people in her village know about. They know that she is capable of magic, but only a few know exactly what magic she holds inside.

Wren is not comfortable with her powers, but when an attack comes to her home and witnesses the burning of her library, she knows that she must act. She’s heard of the burnings and attacks of other town’s libraries. Someone is on the hunt for something, and they don’t care how they acquire the knowledge that they after. When things come close to home before their fateful attack, Wren crosses paths with a Necromancer. Is he part of the group causing the chaos across the land? Or he is someone she can call friend and ally?

The overall storyline with The Shadows of Wren is slow-moving to moderate at times. The story focuses heavily on Wren and tells the story from the first person perspective. Wren isn’t necessarily a brash or even sassy character. She’s, kind of….bland to be honest. Yes, she has this unique and interesting magic, but she rarely has any moments that truly stand out when it comes to her character.

Wren has some moments of bravery scattered throughout the story, but she tends to come off as more of a foolish girl than a strong young woman. There are prime examples scattered throughout, but the starkest one will be when she takes it upon herself to go after the Sentinels when they are investigating something near the woods and almost gets herself killed. She has no true fighting training, but has the thought process that she can be of some help. Does she end up being helpful? Yes. Did she almost end up losing her life first? Yes.

When she decides that she wants to do something then she moves ahead with it. These decisions tend to orbit around the love interest that is quickly introduced in the form of the Necromancer, Tyran. Readers will want to hold back a touch in the event that Tyran proves to be a “devil in disguise” but Wren is quickly head over heels for the man which goes to showcase her youth and naivety. Of course, as of this book, the author allows things to go in Wren’s favor concerning the romance angle, and things appear to be “all’s well.”

As promised there are some truly unique and interesting creatures that the author gives readers throughout this book. Wren meets one, and is rescued from certain death by Tyran. This particular “monster” is a wild combination of multiple creatures. Your eyes might bug out of your head a bit, but your imagination will have a grand time as it conjures up this monster’s appearance. Then there is another later on in the story, that is allowed to escape death thanks to Wren’s soft heart. Plus, the creature is truly beautiful, and it would be a shame for it to have been slaughtered for simply following it’s nature.

There are some twists and turns and surprises scattered through The Shadows of Wren, we just would have liked more drama. More intensity, and more edge of your seat moments. There is honestly little to grab you and keep you page-turning at a rapid pace to make you eager to find out what happens next. It’s a touch disappointing. The book is interesting, but it falls short of being fantastic. There are a few explosive moments here and there, but it fails to give this book the jolt that it desperately needed in the energy department.

The Shadows of Wren is the first book in this series, however, if you’re a reader who hates cliffhangers...do not worry. There will be none of that here. In fact, the book ends with a sweet moment  between Wren and Tyran. Unfortunately, this sweet moment will do little to whet your appetite to look forward to book two. For that, you’d probably have to stop more than a few pages before the end. LOL!

This storyline and series have potential, but the characters are going to need more than a little bit of fire and drama to get there.

We’ll have to see where things unfold from here. For now, this is an okay romantic fantasy novel. It’s hit and miss in the drama department. Would we continue this series? The answer is probably as long as things pick up in book two with some serious energy.

Lightfall Review Spotlight

Lightfall is the first book in Elsa Jade's The Dreadmarked Dragon series, and let's just say this...this book is not fast-paced, but it has a gripping storyline that is going to keep you coming back for more. 

What does a street urchin have to lose when she finds herself with just a second's worth of an opportunity to escape her pursuers and join up with one of The Chosen? Well, let's just say...it's probably going to be better than whatever punishment they are looking to meet out on her for stealing. Feinan was abandoned as a child, and forced to grow up the streets. But things are changing. A Devouring has been called for, and one of The Chosen briefly makes an attempt at escape. You can guess that things don't go as planned. 

Feinan though takes the opportunity presented to her with the arrival of the Dragon Prince to join this particular Chosen One in the hopes that this opportunity will bring her something, anything better than her specific plight. 

Feinan is an interesting character whom the author focuses on throughout the story. She's got nothing to lose and it shows. Of course, the friends that she inevitably makes along the way try to keep her in line, but...good luck with that. She submits when she wants to and when she doesn't? Well, she doesn't. But one thing is for sure, once you have Feinan on your side...you've got yourself a good friend. 

The storyline's pace is a bit slow, but it's engaging. So, no real complaints here in that respect. You get spurts and sparks of drama and when it comes...it is intense and hard-hitting. You're going to be glued to the pages to discover how that particular scene is going to play out. 

Love it or hate, you get some "holier than thou" characters up in here, too. We particularly love to hate them. LOL! They could easily choose to sacrifice themselves to the dragon for the sake of all, but God forbid that happen, right? Because as one character so eloquently says..."there is a lot that many will give up, but power isn't one of them." Truer words were never spoken. Let me tell ya. 

This book has a lot going for it, and it will leave you eager for what comes next. So, don't miss out on this book and grab it today!
