To celebrate the upcoming release of the sequel, we’re going back to the beginning! Read on for more details about Between Life & Death by Jaclyn Kot!

Between Life and Death is the first book in Jaclyn Kot's Between Life and Death series and if you're looking for a fantastic fantasy novel to dive into? This book? It's it!

Between Life and Death starts off with a bang. You're immediately given a tense situation that will draw you in with a village bracing for something horrific. Author Kot starts off with a tragic situation, and explains to readers just exactly is going on. Talk about shock and awe. A Cleansing is about to happen.

For just the briefest of moments you think - well, there will be some sort of trial. Right? A brief attempt at appearing as though "justice" is being done. Something to prove that this individual is guilty of the crime they are being accused of. Nope! Straight to the pyre with you and it shall be done! Cue jaw-drop! But it doesn't stop there! Nope! Eyes bugging out will be your next act. No, seriously. It will be.

While this author shocks us with horrific scenes and situations we also get sprinkles of humor in these beginning chapters. You might feel a touch guilty having guilty when someone just died, but hey...the old adage - it's either laugh or cry. Take your pick.

Sage is most definitely an interesting main character. Her past is shrouded in secret. No, seriously. She was found on the edge of a lake. You can't get more secretive than that! But her other secret? She's one of the Cursed.

What does that mean? Well, if she's not careful? She'll be the next to burn. But it's a risk she's willing to take when her brother, Kaleb, is conscripted into the King's army. Sage knows what this means, but is it worth her life? She may think so, but another? Well, he strongly disagrees and exercises that response through his own gift.

Go ahead and settle in because after these first few chapters, if you're not already hooked on the story, you will be by now. So make sure you have some snacks, and your favorite drink(s) and are someplace comfortable because you're going to be glued to this book.

Between Life and Death is a page-turner from beginning to end. This book is beautifully written. Author Kot lures readers deeper and deeper into the story with interesting characters and well-placed descriptions that help to flesh this story out.

You're going to meet new characters along the way, and truths are going to be revealed, all leading up to an ending that you will have you begging for book two. Good thing it's coming soon, right? Because we neeeeeedsss it!!! LOL!

No, she's not dying, but she has an "unwelcome friend" with her. Or does she? The truth of it won't come out until a surprise appearance by another character, but it definitely builds the suspense, and your eagerness to delve deeper into this book. So, it works! LOL!

The story will then shift to another FMC, Penny. Each of these characters is dealing with their own troubles in this world torn apart by chaos, destruction, and death. The interesting thing about Penny? She's looking for our girl, Stella. The big question? Why. The good news? We don't have to wait long for that answer! But prepare to have the fires of "the need to know more" to be lit! Because once they are...you're going to DE-VOUR this book! Let the fires rage!!

This book is a page-turner. It has a gripping storyline, packed with a nice cast of characters, tons of drama, and twists that you just won't see coming. Be forewarned for those expecting a "quick" read...this book is CHONKY!! We absolutely loved it! You're simply going to want to push the world aside, say "Leave me in peace to devour this book" and go. LOL! So, be prepared for that. Of course, you could just wait until the weekend, because then you'll have every reason to shut off the phone, leave the t.v. off, and pretend the world outside doesn't exist.

What's more though is that this is just the beginning!! Yes! That's right! Just the beginning! There's more to come and we're here for it all! We can't wait to find out what comes next, because this book was so good!

Born and raised in Ohio, where she still resides with her spouse, young child, and sweet senior dog, L.B. August’s most significant memories are Cedar Point and failing Hooked on Phonics (true story). This book's gorgeous cover is sure to grab your attention, but it's what lies between the covers that will hold you trapped in it's grip till the last page to find out what happens next.

Stars Ascending starts out innocently enough. Carolynn and her best friend, Beth, are heading out to a local club to have a good time and party. Carolynn is already feeling insecure because of how she's dressed, but Beth insists that they'll be having a great time! So, she relents. What comes next is going to be completely unexpected.

Cue the entrance of Donnie. Who is Donnie? Well, for now, he's a mystery guy who was lurking in the shadows of the club. She knows nothing about this guy, but she knows that the heat between them while they danced...undeniable. While it goes no further, it does stick in her mind long after she's left.

Of course, the author is quick to let readers know that Carolynn is special. She can read minds and her best friend, Beth, knows all about it. So, that means one thing - Carolynn probably let it slip. LOL! It's fine though, but it adds a new angle to the story. It means that those around her are comfortable with who and what she is. What is she exactly? Well, that's a mystery shrouded in shadows until you get deeper into the story, but it's tied to the nightmares that begin plaguing her once again.

This book has a mildly slow start, but just look at it as the author setting the stage. Preparing the foundation a piece at a time so that readers can get some background on Carolynn and her history. It's a touch sad when you learn that she was abandoned at birth, but she's not alone. She has a massive black she-wolf and let me tell you...I'm living for it!

There is so much to uncover with this story and once it gains traction, things are off to the races! You will be devouring this book. Since this is part of a series, there will be a bit of a cliffhanger. Will be a crazy insane one that has you throwing the book at the wall? No. So take a deep breath. LOL! That's the upside. It will leave you with your interest piqued because of the unexpected angle it leaves off on.

Love a good fantasy novel with tons of twists? Then be sure to add this one to your list (ya know, since it's not out just quite yet). You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

Heather Smith has been crafting stories for as long as she could remember. It wasn’t until she was fifteen that she wrote her first novel that she had no intentions of publishing. Let’s just say it was a knock off of Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer….and yes she threw it away. (cringe) At nineteen she wrote her first completed manuscript that is still a work in progress, but will soon turn into a four-book series. Since then, she’s worked on countless other projects and is constantly writing down new plot ideas. Yes, her minds a mess.

When she isn’t writing about fantastical worlds, she resides in Hudson, Florida. She is a mother of four; Carolynn, Aiden, Evelynn, and Cameron.
