Lightfall Review Spotlight

‘Tis said, if the Dragon Prince falls, so falls the kingdom.
Lucky for the kingdom, I—a nobody thief—am here to catch him.
But now he won’t let me go, and I may be the next feast of The Dreadmarked Dragon.

We're celebrating the release of Lightfall by Elsa Jade! Make sure you treat yourself to this one!

Lightfall is the first book in Elsa Jade's The Dreadmarked Dragon series, and let's just say this...this book is not fast-paced, but it has a gripping storyline that is going to keep you coming back for more.

What does a street urchin have to lose when she finds herself with just a second's worth of an opportunity to escape her pursuers and join up with one of The Chosen? Well, let's just say...it's probably going to be better than whatever punishment they are looking to meet out on her for stealing. Feinan was abandoned as a child, and forced to grow up the streets. But things are changing. A Devouring has been called for, and one of The Chosen briefly makes an attempt at escape. You can guess that things don't go as planned.

Feinan though takes the opportunity presented to her with the arrival of the Dragon Prince to join this particular Chosen One in the hopes that this opportunity will bring her something, anything better than her specific plight.

Feinan is an interesting character whom the author focuses on throughout the story. She's got nothing to lose and it shows. Of course, the friends that she inevitably makes along the way try to keep her in line, but...good luck with that. She submits when she wants to and when she doesn't? Well, she doesn't. But one thing is for sure, once you have Feinan on your side...you've got yourself a good friend.

The storyline's pace is a bit slow, but it's engaging. So, no real complaints here in that respect. You get spurts and sparks of drama and when it comes...it is intense and hard-hitting. You're going to be glued to the pages to discover how that particular scene is going to play out.

Love it or hate, you get some "holier than thou" characters up in here, too. We particularly love to hate them. LOL! They could easily choose to sacrifice themselves to the dragon for the sake of all, but God forbid that happen, right? Because as one character so eloquently says..."there is a lot that many will give up, but power isn't one of them." Truer words were never spoken. Let me tell ya.

This book has a lot going for it, and it will leave you eager for what comes next. So, don't miss out on this book and grab it today!

Lightfall (The Dreadmarked Dragon Duology #1)

Publication Date: May 13, 2024

Genre: Romantasy/ Adventure

  • Epic romantasy adventure

  • Snarky heroine makes bad choices

  • Doomed prince

  • Found family

  • We all have wounds

  • You are my only light

He is the Dragon Prince, cursed and bound by sacrificed auras to a savage demon dragon. Wielding the barely tamed monster like a weapon, the prince fights the hellish horde to preserve the light of all the Living Lands.

Me… I’m nothing. Or not quite nothing. I’m a good thief, with clever fingers and a wayward tongue—which only gets me in trouble when the glowering Dragon Prince rescues me. He wasn’t rescuing just me, of course. There’s a fine lady and a brave soldier and a shy little shepherd boy, and also a holier-than-me cleric and a king.

Now, because of a mistake that was not really mine, I’m trapped in a dangerous adventure. Demonic verges are splitting across the kingdom, releasing ghastly spawn from the Lost Lands. Even worse, the enchanted chains on the dragon are fraying, and the lifetime of scars that wound the Dragon Prince are bleeding where only I can see.

We must find our way through ancient tomes and fabled talismans and terrible battles before the kingdom crumbles. But I might be falling too—falling for the dreadmarked prince. He did save me, after all, so I might just save him in return.

Enter the exciting world of the Living Lands in LIGHTFALL, book one of The Dreadmarked Dragon duology, an epic romantic fantasy, where noble intrigue and demonic war are equally fatal, where one touch in the dark may lead to desire or damnation—and love might be most lethal of all. For fans of slow-burn romantasy who thought The Lord of the Rings needed a few more kisses.

The Audient and the Phantom Night Review Spotlight

We’re celebrating the release of The Audient and the Phantom Night this week! Read on for more details!

The Audient and the Phantom Night is the beginning of Sadie Hewitt's The Aeglecian series. Love pirates? Love curses? Love a good fantasy novel that will sweep you away into the depths of the sea? Then this is the book that you're not going to want to miss out! This book is a page-turner, and absolutely delicious.

The Audient and the Phantom Night begins with a sinking ship. The crew is doomed, but the captain makes the decision to refuse to roll the dice and see where it will lead them. You are introduced to Devlin aka the Spectre in this first chapter. He's looking to collect souls, but this time around...he fails. But it won't always be that way.

When I read that first chapter with Devlin trying to "recruit" some new members of his crew I immediately got "Ghost Ship" vibes. I got really excited. LOL! Of course, this book isn't nearly as nefarious as that movie, but that was the initial vibe that I got. I get it again later on in the story during a particular scene that plays out, but this book is dynamically different so rest easy in that. LOL!

The book alternates between Fenna and Devlin in the POV. The story focuses heavily on Fenna in the beginning and I enjoyed learning about her and her brother. When he joins the navy and leaves her behind I felt bad for her. You absolutely see how the people in the village treat her. Of course, she has a unique gift, but only she, her brother, and her friend are aware of her gift. Wonder what her gift is? Well, you'll have to read to find out. Because it is one that she is warned against using. Granted she does use it a few times in the beginning, but then it takes a back seat for awhile. Honestly, I actually forgot for awhile. LOL! Anyways!

When Fenna's brother shows up on the run and the town comes under attack, she does what her heart tells her...she tries to help the ungrateful wretches who are the townsfolk. What ends up happening? Well, she crosses paths with Devlin. When he demands Dasos she offers herself up in his place. His debt? 25 years. Yikes! But that's love for you! Why did he run? Well, bro saw something he can never unsee. It had my jaw dropping so...I can understand. LOL!

This book has some darkly delicious moments. The Audient and the Phantom Night is engaging and truly gripping. This book leads a dance between Fenna and Devlin with a lot of back and forth. Fenna is finding her place among the crew, but she's learning that not everyone is safe. Of course, this sets into motion a secondary drama that will unfold later on in the story. This book will pull you to the edge of your seat with each turn of the page.

The steamy building between Fenna and Devlin is going to demand a fan or in some cases...you just simply opening the door and standing in it to cool yourself off. LOL! This book is slow-burn so settle in. The temptation is going to burn the words off the pages. Fenna is intrigued by Devlin, but she has no intentions of being used or exploited by him and tossed aside. (She's had some bad experiences back home.) But he has no intention of doing anything of that sort to her. The question of when "will they" will border line have you raging...in a good way! LOL!

Grab your copy of this book! Remember, this is just the beginning and this author will absolutely leave you begging for more. I know that I can't wait for what comes next!

5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Sadie Hewitt, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to what comes next!

Steel and Stone Review Spotlight

We’re celebrating the release of Steel and Stone this week! Make sure you grab a copy today!

Steel and Stone is the second book in Silvana G. Sanchez's Cursed Kingdoms series. This book can be read as a standalone novel as it focuses mainly on the two characters - Philip and Aurora.

Steel and Stone is a good book choice for readers who enjoy fairytale retellings. The author looks to engage readers from the beginning of this book by giving them a taste of what is going on in Aurora's kingdom. Remember, this is a retelling, which means that there will be familiar elements while the author weaves in her own twists and creates her own version.

Aurora has made the hard decision to contact the lord of the Underworld. Does she get who she's calling for? Well, let's just say that things go left and she gets tricked. Now Philip, who arrived at the last minute, is left heartbroken and has to take on the role of "regent" for her people. But things devolve from there. A coup is in works. Another seeks the power of the throne that they feel is theirs. This will bring death and devastation to the people.

Now, Philip must make a choice. Continue to stand with Aurora's kingdom despite his heartbreak? Or let them fall to the ones who are eyeing it like a prize?

This story alternates between Philip and Aurora. So you get a dual POV with alternating chapters. Even with Aurora being "not aware" of her surroundings, you still get her perspective in the story. I have to admit that I liked that the author chose to do this. But don't worry, there isn't a repeat of Aurora being "dead to the world" constantly. The author is quick to shift the story forward so that the reader is kept engaged in what is going on.

Steel and Stone is an engaging story. When I first started reading this book I felt that the details were overdone. The story felt like it was being stifled by the amount of detail that the author chose to put in this book. I wanted less. The deeper I got into the book though the more I got used to the overflow of detail. In some areas, it adds to the story and helps to paint a more vivid picture. In other areas, I skimmed some of the details to keep to the meat of the story.

One particular aspect that I appreciated about this story is that Philip doesn't go alone. Also, I love that his captain isn't the norm. This character has some serious sass and attitude. I loved it. Of course, for a time it begged the question as to what their EXACT relationship was or has been. I mean, not everyone has the gall to stand up to their sovereign. LOL!

The deeper you get into the story the more engaged you're going to become as Aurora deals with being in the Underworld, and Philip takes steps to get back the woman that he loves. This book is an engaging page-turner. Mixing Sleeping Beauty with the story of Hades and Persephone, this book is sure to be one that readers enjoy.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Silvana G. Sanchez, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book. I look forward to what comes next!

Where David Threw Stones Review Spotlight

Welcome to the tour for Where David Threw Stones by Elyse Hoffman. Perfect for fans of The Book Thief.

Where David Threw Stones is an engaging historical fiction novel that the minute you start reading, you're not going to want to put this book down.

David is a little Jewish boy who recently lost his parents to a terrible car accident. They were murdered and while he was in the car with them, he survived the crash. He was a step away from being put into the system, but his paternal grandfather stepped forward to claim him. Now, he's off to a small town of Brennenbach, Germany. This small town houses a dark secret. David's grandfather is determined to shielf him from it, but then the family pup, Mozart, goes missing - David takes a dangerous risk. He's been told - don't leave the house after a certain time, and he's about to find out why.

David is an engaging character that will have you feeling a variety of emotions as you read this story. He's a Jewish boy living in the aftermath of World War II. There is still anti-Semitism feelings running rampant throughout Germany. So it shouldn't come as any surprise to the young boy that Brennenbach is no exception. He proudly wears his Kippah, but his grandfather shows signs that it just might not be a good idea. David's guilt plagues him concerning his parents, so he refuses to remove it. By doing so, it sheds light on a secret that his grandfather has been keeping for years.

I found this book to be so engaging I couldn't put it down. There were moments in this book that I had mixed feelings toward David. One minute I was feeling bad for him, and then I was disappointed in him. I totally understood his desire to stick to his faith and the standards that they hold. However, when it causes chaos and loss for his grandfather I was disappointed in him. Of course, he had no idea of that particular fact, and I thought - "well, if the grandfather had simply said something" but would it have really mattered? Who knows.

The deeper the story goes, the more you learn about the characters. You get flashbacks in the appropriate areas and it really fleshes the story out even more. You're eyes are absolutely going to blow wide when the curse makes an appearance in the storyline. It adds another level of drama to the story as David finds himself in quite the predicament again and again. Things go well for awhile, but then all it takes one misstep.

There are twists, turns, surprises, and so much more in this book. I absolutely love when the story ties into the title as well. It's absolutely perfect.

This book is a must read for lovers of historical fiction with unique twists that will keep them coming back for more. I've never read "The Book Thief" or "Beyond the Tracks" but if you've read those books and enjoyed them, then I'm sure you will enjoy this book as well. The attention to detail, the character development all lend themselves to create a truly engaging story. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I am rating this book a well earned 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Elyse Hoffman, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.
