Forgotten Ashes Review Spotlight

Forgotten Ashes is the first book in the Iolite Academy series by Kathryn Covens, and readers who love upper YA fantasy romance novels will absolutely devour this book.

Forgotten Ashes draws readers in with a gorgeous cover. Swirling branches and briar dance around the cover of this book. Gates of iron stand proudly in the center of the cover, rising up through a sliver of the moon. Beneath, swirl licks of flames as they rise up around the gates while embers dance higher into the air. Forgotten Ashes has a truly stunning cover that grabs the eye and makes one curious as to the story that lies inside.

Forgotten Ashes is book one in the Iolite Academy series. Author Covens has imagined a world of shifters, demons, witches, and other creatures. Get ready to meet a young woman by the name of Briar. There is something truly unique about Briar, and only a select few know her secret. To know the truth about her? It’s a dangerous thing, and it will mean the end of Briar. Why? Because she’s not supposed to even be alive.

Things are shifting in Briar’s world, and it’s not a good thing. As the Beta to her pack’s Luna. She’s earned her place, but not everyone is taking it in stride. A certain Enforcer is holding onto a tight grudge, and it’s causing some ripples of trouble. Sooner rather than later these ripples will impact everything.

But first things first, yes? Briar is getting ready to head to the Iolite Academy where she is supposed to take her place as Luna. Her packmate, Grayson is already there as the Alpha. Things between them? Oy vey. They are not what they used to be. You’ll find out really fast what caused a shift between them.

Forgotten Ashes is a page-turner of a novel, so when do you start this book? Buckle up. Settle in. Make sure you have some drinks and snacks because you’re not going to want to put this book down once you start reading it.

Forgotten Ashes starts out outside of Iolite Academy, but once it shifts there that is where the drama really ramps up. The tension and drama between Briar and Grayson is everything. They are packmates, so you’d think that he would be supportive of her. Nope! This guy undermines her at every turn! It will drive you absolutely crazy! But it will also have you digging deeper into this book to find out what Briar will do.

Typically when authors say “feisty female” they mean a female character who thinks that being overly sassy, mouthy, and brash. Let’s be real...for this reader, we absolutely HATE those types of female MCs. They typically detract from the storyline and have us (we personally) rolling our eyes every time she opens her mouth. LOL! Briar, thankfully is a truly unique character in that she is balanced, fun, and has just enough strength and sass to give some spice to the story.

Author Covens...you did that. Pat yourself on the back. Briar is a fun character. She’s strong when she has to be, but she also has a softer side. She stands up for those who are under her protection. We love her sense of humor and how she chooses to handle various situations. Honestly, she does better than we would have when it comes to Grayson’s constant undermining.

There are moments where she finally reaches her limits and we are not ashamed to say...we cheered her on. LOL! Another character that readers are absolutely going to love is Kenna. Girlfriend is a stick of dynamite in the best way. We worried that she’d be that “mean girl” character, but the friendship that sparks up between her and Briar is everything.

Get ready to laugh quite a bit when Kenna is on the scene. She is so out of the box you’re going to be “Team Kenna and Briar” before you know it. It’s rather funny since Kenna is the one that Briar is going to have to fight to obtain the title of Luna at the Academy. The knee-jerk reaction is to want to “hate” the person Briar is going to have to go up against, but Kenna is one shifter you’re going to love.

The drama isn’t contained to just the Academy grounds though. Though of course, you’re going to find a fae (teacher) you’re going to want to smack into another world, and that’s on top of the bs going on with Grayson.

Grayson is one of the most infuriating characters in this book. Author Covens does this delicate dance with him though. One minute you want to smack him for being a jerk to our girl Briar, and then you see those sparks of romance trying to kick up. You don’t know whether you want the sparks to take hold and ignite, or if you want Briar to just give him the cold shoulder or pull a Ceelo Green and say “F--- You!” LOL!

Forgotten Ashes is told from a dual POV. The story focuses heavily on Briar (The Rose) and then a second character, who you get to guess about (The Moon). Initially, we thought that it was one character, but then...it didn’t make sense when certain details were laid out. Author Covens does this to keep us on our toes. We’re sure of it. LOL! But then it appears to shift more solidly into one character’s direction and settle there.

Are there new sparks of a potential future romance building? Can we hope? Dare we hope? Well, we’re going to hope because...well, what’s the harm in it, right? Right!?! LOL! Things are sounding like maybe, so we’re going to just cling to it, and sit tight for book two...yeah.

Things aren’t supposed to exist anymore and proving that they do. The secret that Briar is clinging to is becoming more and more in danger, and with that so is her life. The future is becoming more and more uncertain. With one exposure Briar’s life will soon be under threat.

Forgotten Ashes ends on a cliffhanger that will have you howling for book two. Trust us on this one...we’re ready to get down on our knees and beg author Covens for book two...because we need it now!!

Forgotten Ashes blends fantasy, small glimpses of romance, dynamic characters, intrigue, and more than a little suspense. Nothing is what it seems and this book is an absolute feast. Readers who enjoy all of the above...grab this book and dive in! You will not be disappointed.

To Ignite a Flame Review Spotlight

Happy publication day to author Daniela A Mera and congratulations on the release of the final book in the Entangled with the Enduar duet, To Ignite a Flame!

Estela and Teo’s story continues in To Ignite a Flame, and you are not going to want to miss the gripping conclusion to this pair’s duology. But don’t get too comfortable. Once you’ve been introduced to this world, you’re going to want to revisit again and again.

To Ignite a Flame picks up where book one, To Steal a Bride, left off. Well, sorta. At the beginning of this book we get clued in to what exactly is Rholker’s “hang-up” when it comes to Estela. What’s his deal exactly? Well, we get a glimpse into what has become his obsession when it comes to Estela. Just goes to show how a simple act of “kindness” can go to plant a seed of twisted desire in an individual that pushes them to do cruel things. Don’t think for one second we’re excusing Rholker, far from it. He’s a jerk and deserves what he has coming for him.

Once the story shifts back to our two main characters Estela and Teo we’re thrown into the chaos that they are struggling with and suffering through. Estela, has been kidnapped by the giants. When she has finally stopped being so obstinate towards Teo and allows him in this happens. Of course it does, because why not? Otherwise we wouldn’t have a story to dive into, right? LOL!

Now, Estela is locked up in a dungeon, Rholker is looking to claim her for his comfort woman, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to have her. How far will he go? Well, book one left readers with the answer to that question, and book two continues it. Let’s just remind everyone of this one fact...Rhokler...is unhinged. Period-t.

Teo is struggling with his own problems with Estela. He misses her, he needs her, but his people need him, too. Compound all of that with his quest for answers. Yeah, the author dropped quite the bomb on readers with the Elves turning traitorous behind an artifact that was stolen years ago. You’d have thought they’d have gotten over it! I mean, come on!! They’re doing great! They’re doing better than the trolls, ahem, excuse us – the Enduares. So...does it really matter? Still? Well, the answer to that question...you’ll find it deep inside this book. LOL!

Estela is a challenging character to really “love” but she grows on you. Just be careful, because right when you think she’s making progress...she does/says something that throws it all out the window. LOL! You can’t help but think...”less vitriol Estela, less!” Seriously, less means that you’ll potentially make a friend or two who will be willing to help you out. Just a thought. LOL!

Prepare for a lot of chaos and drama with this book. You can’t help but hope for the best for the two lovers as they each fight to get back to the other. It won’t be an easy thing, but everything that plays out is beautifully written as each grows to love and care for the other more. Huh, so absences makes the heart grow fonder in this case.

But Estela was challenging as hell in book one, Teo takes up the mantle in this book. We cut him some slack because we get his damage more so. He has a set goal and agenda, with Estela (especially in book one) she just came off as contrary and obstinate.

Readers who are wanting a HEA are going to get in this book. Of course, since it’s a duology, it’s to be fully expected. It’ll take some time to get there, but it is definitely worth the wait.

Love a good fantasy romance novel packed with drama, tension, and so much more? Then this is the duology for you.

Bloodwoven Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for Bloodwoven! This fantasy novel details the story of a man who begins to question the teachings and his beliefs. Where will these questions lead him and what path will he end up on?

Bloodwoven is the first book in G.J. Terral’s The Binding Tenets trilogy. This fantasy novelThis fantasy novel will detail the story of our main character, Lin, as he goes from being an Escorter for the Ferrucium, but all of that is about to change with the stroke of a knife. Lin will find himself on a path that was, in the beginning, not of his choosing. But if he wishes to return to the life he once knew...he’ll have to make a choice to end the life of a man that he once thought was an ally.

Bloodwoven piques the reader’s interest with a cover that depicts the main character, Lin, holding a small crying child. In the background are a ship on the left-hand side, and some buildings on the right. The impression given is that Lin is going to find himself in possession of a small child. What is the significance of the child? Does the child hold some importance to the storyline? Or are they simply a side character to it all?

Well, to find the answers to these questions you’ll have to take a chance on this story dear reader, and find them out for yourself. But it is a story worth diving into and learning more about the characters you will discover inside.

Bloodwoven by author Terral details Lin’s story as he escorts a pair of his brethren to a location of their choosing. Lin has no idea why Aenum and his partner, Margaret wish to reach a particular destination, but what the following events set in motion will push Lin onto a different path than what he had originally foreseen for himself.

Bloodwoven is an interesting fantasy novel that pits one character’s beliefs against the things that he experiences. Lin’s beliefs are frequently challenged throughout this story as he has been taught that to be “stitched” is a sin. Something worthy of being killed over. But what about if it is done without your consent? What if it is done to save the life of someone who would otherwise die?

Well, apparently, the rules don’t care. If you are “stitched” then you are viewed as “untethered.” Someone who has gone rogue and that you have “desecrated” the Great Tapestry woven by the original Weavers. Some of those deemed “Untethered” are truly dangerous. There are many scenes depicting some of their heinous acts towards innocents. The question that will haunt you throughout this story will be...Why? Why do they commit these horrific acts? What is the driving force for them to do this?

Well, to be fair, this situation with the “Untethered” is just one aspect of the story. The driving force that starts things off, besides an attack...is a murder. Lin blames himself for the death, and Aenum, would have him believe a false truth. But there’s one thing about truth...and that is it will always come to light.

Lin is the main character and primary focus of this story. Author Terral works throughout the story to develop Lin as a character. Lin tends to resist at times because he wants to hold to the teachings that he has been taught. His life being saved by a woman by the name of Tylle is something that he has struggled with for quite some time. However, she could have allowed him to die...which is what Aenum basically left him to...death. Granted, Aenum had a small child with him, but still...he, Aenum, should have done more.

What you’ll notice as you read this book is that Aenum is typically quick to start some mess, and then when things get rough? He’s the first to bail and leave everyone else to handle what he kicked up. Of course, once the enemy is on their back, or backfoot, then expect Aenum to come sweeping in and to deliver the final blow.

You’re really going to get the sense that Aenum is a snake. No, seriously, this guy is sneaky, and as the story goes deeper, you’re going to see that he has an agenda. Also, Aenum doesn’t care who gets hurt along the way...as long as he gets what he wants.

There is quite a bit of magic at play in this story. You get it from the beginning with Lin and others weaving magic and utilizing it to fight and defend. Readers get a nice dynamic of magic users in this story. There isn’t much of a difference in how the magic is used, but the characters who utilize it vary. Which is where the uniqueness comes from.

Bloodwoven will read like a quest for revenge, and on one hand...it is. You’ll wonder if the revenge will even be realized because of how things pan out throughout the story. Of course, you’ll need to wait and see where things go. It’ll be worth the wait to see how it all unfolds. But be prepared for lots of twists and turns.

As this book is part of a trilogy expect the ending of this book...to be just the beginning. There will be a brief resolution, but author Terral makes sure to leave the door open for more to come. One “loose end” may be tied up, but a bigger and more dangerous threat is looming. How will Lin and those he has come to care about fare? Well, we’ll just have to wait to find out.

Bloodwoven is a truly interesting story, and it has a nice moderate pace with some truly engaging moments that will sweep you away deeper into the story. Readers who enjoy well-developed fantasy novels will enjoy this book.

Soul Cage Review Spotlight

Soul Cage is the newest book and the first in a new series by L.R. Shulz. This fantasy novel? Yeah, you’re not going to want to miss it. It is going to grab you, grip you, and keep you page-turning to the very end.

Soul Cage is book one in author Shulz’s Soulbreaker series. We think you’ll agree that author Shulz has struck gold with this book. You’re going to get danger, epic fights, tons of magic, dynamic characters, and twists that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Readers who enjoy flawed characters will absolutely devour this book as it is packed with characters who struggle with who they are, what they are, and the power that weighs on them. Literally. Carrying the souls of thousands is no easy thing, and if you’re not strong enough? They will break you...and destroy everything you love.

The first thing that readers are going to notice is this book’s cover. Depicted on the cover is a character on a swirling green background, clothes tattered, chest cracked and broken open with souls appearing to pour out. This book’s cover gives readers just a glimpse of what awaits them in this book. It’s enough to whet the appetite and have you eager for more. With the lines “Souls are the currency. Death is the price.” That’s sure to spur more than a reader or two to go and grabthis book.

When you dive into this book author Shulz drops readers into a scenario already rife with danger. An attack is being launched, fear is rampant, and death appears to be knocking on their door. You will meet Myddrin, one of the main characters in this story will follow. Myddrin is a humble teacher at this point in the story, but all of that is about to change. Lives are under threat. Their souls are at risk of being lost and absorbed by their killers. But if those sworn to protect, the Knights of Aen, can hold off the threat sweeping down on them, the Skullsworn, they just might stand a chance.

Unfortunately, while Myddrin makes it out alive, it’s in this fight he loses something important to him. In the process, he is also burdened with a huge amount of power. It’s a twist of fate that this power should become his, but his it does become, and while it may not be immediate he will one day be called upon to utilize that power to help save a kingdom.

Soul Cage gives readers multiple POV from several different characters. Don’t worry it won’t be a huge number of characters that you cycle through as you read this novel. You’re going to get Myddrin, a young boy you’ll meet at the beginning by the name of Will and a young woman who is struggling with her quest for power, Tvora.

Will reads like a boy on the spectrum. We won’t classify him as anything specific, but that’s how he reads. Will is a character who struggles. From the way this book unfolds, the fight that he survived really took a toll on him, but there’s more going on than meets the eye. Just wait for it though, because more will be revealed about Will as the story unfolds.

As Soul Cage unfolds Will will prove to be a challenging character. He has lots of struggles. He wants to be a Knight of Aen, but because of his differences he’s looked down upon. Will is even bullied by some of his own peers because of his differences. It’s sad to see. Though, he doesn’t make it easy for himself either. The fact that he takes things so literally makes it a challenge for people to talk to him.

The beauty of Soul Cage is that as the book unfolds and the story progresses, Will gradually grows as a character. It’s not something that will happen quickly, so be prepared to exercise some patience with him. It may get a touch frustrating at times, but that’s one way of knowing that you’ve got yourself a good book.

Tvora is another interesting character. She’s soul-broken. What does that mean you ask? Well, we could tell you, but where would the fun be in that when you could simply grab this book and dive in? It’ll be more enthralling to discover the truth behind her for yourself. Her magic is truly strong, but with the amount of souls she carries...it’s not surprising.

What makes Tvora truly unique are the fact that she carries three companions with her. You’ll meet two of them rather quickly as part of Tvora’s quest is to gain enough power to allow them to “exist” for longer outside of herself. Tvora isn’t a “black” character to be deemed “evil” or a “white” character to be deemed “good.” No, Tvora is more of a gray character. Flawed, struggling even, but she still has some morals.

Soul Cage is packed with tension, drama, and danger. You get chapters that shift between the three main characters and each lends their various perspectives. You’ll see the danger unfolding not just in the camp of the enemy, but even at home where you’d think some should be safe.

Author Shulz creates a dynamic tapestry of a storyline that will keep readers page-turning to find out what happens next. Hoping for some epic battle scenes? Get excited, because those are definitely included in this book.

As Soul Cage draws to a close, don’t let the final chapters fool you. While things may unfold a particular way, don’t allow author Shulz lull you into a state of complacency. Remember, Soul Cage is just the beginning. Of course, there are going to be a couple final surprises, and the ending? Brace yourself. Trust us on this one. As we were reading the final paragraphs of this book...our final thought was “Oh shit.” LOL! One thing is for sure...you’re going to be looking forward to book two.

Readers who enjoy a gripping fantasy novel then you’re not going to want to miss out on checking out Soul Cage. You’re going to get a dynamic cast of characters, epic drama, and so much more. For us? This book is a must read and earns a place in our top 10 for 2024.

Pros:

  • Engaging storyline
  • Dynamic cast of characters
  • Epic drama
  • Page-turner
  • Plenty of twists & surprises

Cons:

  • None of merit

5 out of 5 stars

Thanks to the author L.R. Shulz for the opportunity to read and review this book. We look forward to what comes next in book two!

A Cursed Son Review Spotlight

We're thrilled to share this Kickstarter campaign with you all this week. If funded, this beautiful special edition complete with digital sprayed edges, foiled case laminate, full color endpapers, and double sided dust jackets, will be available to readers and collectors!

A Cursed Son is the first book Day Leitao's Remnants of the Fallen Kingdom series, and fans of author Leitao's are not going to want to miss out on this book and budding series.

The first thing that is going to draw readers is in that gorgeous cover. It's absolutely stunning! Imagine having that on your bookshelf! Makes you want to drool, right? LOL! Well, then we recommend that you jump on that Kickstarter (link below) and don't pass up the opportunity for it!

Astra is the main character in A Cursed Son, she's a trained decoy for the princess. All Astra wants is to be able to get out and show her worth. But due to what she is...that is deemed a rather dangerous path for her. But hey...when she sets her mind to a particular path...she won't be dissuaded. Wait until you read what she does.

Things don't go as planned, but they do make for an interesting scenario that she finds herself in. She gets the assignment she was gunning for, unfortunately, her companion is not who she was hoping for. Things get really interesting though when they get "abandoned" on a journey and the "disgraced" prince is the one who "attacks" them. He's looking for something...but what.

It's more than a little humorous when he tries to access Astra's mind looking for something and all he sees is...what her mind conjures up. It's embarrassing, but kinda funny, too.

While Astra is the main focus of the story, you get the sense from the other girls that she serves with that they wish for more. But is it at all possible when their lives are dedicated to the crown? Astra makes for an interesting character who will draw you in along with her "dream lover."

The Cursed Son is just the beginning for this series, and promises quite a lot more to come. It will be interesting to see where the author takes things from here.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Day Leitao, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! We look forward to what comes next!

Wings of Starless Night Review Spotlight

We're celebrating the release of Sadie Sterling's debut novel, Wings of Starless Night. Read on for more details!

Wings of Starless Night is a gripping romantasy novel that is going to quickly draw you in and keep you coming back for more. Settle in for a good book, because this one...you're going to want more when you reach the final page.

Wings of Starless Night starts off with Princess Allina Kingsdaughter. She's off being a rebel concerning the king's edicts. What are his edicts exactly? Stay close to the palace and don't be going off on random flights. But Allina doesn't wish to be tamed. However, it's not long before danger reaches out and tries to grip her in it's dangerous grasp. What could that be? Well, you better go grab yourself a copy! LOL!

While she escapes with her life this time, the clock is ticking on her safety. You'd think her being a princess within her own kingdom would guarantee her safety. However, her safety is being threatened, even at home. But it's not an outside source that threatens her.

Allina has a special talent thanks to her fae heritage and while it has been frowned upon when she has used it for sneaking around...this time...it is going to benefit her. Because with this last usage...it will reveal a truth that will be what keeps her just a step ahead to staying alive.

This course of action will lead her to make "rogue" choices that will have her labeled a "traitor" and "threat" to her court, but the truth is much deeper than that. So when Allina steps in to rescue and save someone who should be her sworn enemy, it makes the choice to mark her for death...all the easier.

Wings of Starless Night is an engaging novel that will keep you coming back for more. Allina and Cohrven must now be on the run to get him back home to his own people. It won't be easy because Allina's uncle will be aided by the plant life itself. However, when he sees just how truly dangerous Cohrven is and how close death he comes...it shifts the dynamics.

Allina is an interesting character. She's flawed, but that just makes her all the more engaging. She is struggling with the truth of her situation and when she's able to get Cohrven she sees something that breaks her even further. While he appears to have a happy family, she never truly was allowed to experience that. That's not to say that she was neglected, simply her family was ripped away from her when she was still just a child.

Allina is going to be along for the "ride" per say as Cohrven embarks on a dangerous journey to achieve something that many would say should be left alone. However, it's a journey he will not turn away from. At first you'll believe him selfish, but once you learn of his reasons...it puts things in a different light.

Hidden in this story is another story, and another story. Each character has their own secrets, secrets hidden from them and pasts that could define them should all be told. But the future is unwritten and only time will tell where it goes.

The romance angle is subtle but that is to be expected and it's nice to watch things develop between the two characters. Allina is fighting it the hardest, but that's what we see as this story is told from her perspective. Cohrven has his moments as well where we are allowed to see, but those are few and far between. It will be interesting to see where things go from here though.

We look forward to what comes next in book two. The book ends on an interesting note, and so what the fall out will be...we'll have to be patient and wait for the time being.

To the fae of the Sorcen Court, Princess Allina Kingsdaughter is a traitor and a fugitive, inevitably claimed by the same madness that cost her father his crown and his life. Ensnared by the lies of her uncle, the reigning Sorcen King, they will never know the truth of her betrayal.

A traitor princess.

After the tragic deaths of Allina’s parents when she was five, her uncle ascended to the throne in the ensuing chaos, bringing peace and prosperity to Sorcen for the following fourteen years. Allina has always considered him her true father—until the day he orders her death and starts a war by kidnapping Prince Cohrven Nightheart, heir to the Liral Court, a wicked realm Allina’s only heard of in whispers.

A captured prince.

Everyone fears the Nightheart. When he was twelve, he earned his name and his dark reputation as a monster without mercy—or remorse. Since then, rumours of his unrivalled cruelty have only grown.

An evil that has been waiting…

When Cohrven is tortured by her uncle in a gruesome spectacle, Allina uses her hidden illusory magic to save him and escape, but not before his wings are shredded. As her uncle hunts them, time is running short before Liral retaliates in a devastating attack that Cohrven assures will annihilate Sorcen and everyone Allina loves along with it. To survive and preserve the Court that has forsaken her, Allina has to trust the Nightheart, even when he leads her to an ancient evil that could be their destruction.

Wings of Starless Night is an enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, romantasy debut that will captivate you all the way to its breathtaking conclusion.
