At the Gate Review Spotlight

The perfect book to get you in the fall mood! Check out At the Gate by Trey Stone and pre-order a copy today!

Welcome to The Gate. Please enjoy your stay, and don't worry if you don't know when you wish to check out. You're more than welcome to stay...whether you want to or not.

At the Gate is a short paranormal novella horror story that will grip you the minute you step inside The Gate. The Gate is a small hotel that sounds so rundown that you wonder how in the world is it still even open? But...is it really open? Or is this just a figment of someone's imagination?

As you read this short novella your interest will be piqued every step of the way. The author will tease you along with situations that don't make any sense. The main character, Joseph, struggles to understand what exactly it is that he is living. How long has he really been there? What is going on? Why is the structure of the hotel so bizarre? There are a lot of weird things going on and it's a lot of twisted deliciousness.

Now, be forewarned - this book is not for everyone. As this is a "horror" story, there are dark elements and one of these is attempted & thoughts of suicide.

While that dark element is prevalent, the author in no way makes it the center focus of the storyline. Trust me, when you get to the final chapters, your jaw is going to hit the floor. Just remember this - the story is seriously twisted and the ending proves it all. It's great! LOL! Readers who love twisted stories are going to absolutely love this one.

I don't want to give anything away so I'm just gonna scoot on out here before someone tries to keep me from leaving - LOL! But I am rating this novella 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's really well done and I love how the author absolutely kept me on my toes. I highly recommend this novella and I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Looking for a book to get you in the mood for fall? No, I don't necessarily mean "cool evenings, fall leaves, and pumpkin spice." LOL! No, I mean the dark, the twisted, the creepy, and the haunts that will be quick to start. If so, then grab this book. You're going to enjoy it.

Thank you to the author, Trey Stone, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.

"Checking In"

Joseph rang the bell for the fifth time. The loud, dreadful chime echoed throughout the sparsely decorated lobby. The room had a reception desk on one side, a doorway to a dining lounge directly opposite, and a big old stairwell at the end.

Hello?” he called into the dark room behind the desk. It was eerily quiet in the hotel, but he thought he heard people moving around in that back room: shuffling around, feet dragging across the moldy carpet, as if they'd heard him come in but couldn't be bothered to get up.

Turning in a half-circle, Joseph wondered if he was even at the right place. It didn't look like there was anyone in the lobby. It was so quiet, so empty. But when Joseph had mentioned The Gate, the driver who brought him there hadn't even questioned him. This had to be it.

This is the place where I'll end it all. It's perfect.

Hello, is there anyone—?”

Yes?” a hard voice asked from behind him.

Joseph startled and smashed his hip into the side of the reception desk with a painful groan. “Holy hell, you scared me. Do you work here?”

Of course I do.”

The man—or boy, rather—looked too young to work there. His clothes were too big for his arms, his shirt too long at the sleeves, his jacket too wide across the shoulders. He had thin, black hair that fell into his eyes.

Hi, I've booked a room. Joseph P—”

Of course, Mr. Podwall. We've been expecting you.”

When the boy spoke his name, Joseph's stomach sank. The way Bryan said it, with familiar melancholy—or was it disdain?—made Joseph uneasy.

Good, you got my booking then, I wasn't sure if—” “Frank told us. Like I said, we've been expecting you.”

Frank? The driver?” hasn’t that what the cab driver had said his name was? Joseph couldn't quite remember, and he didn't recall giving the driver his own.

Sure, why not,” the boy behind the desk said. He turned a few pages in a large book, making an entry here and there.

Joseph heard movement behind the boy again, in the office

or whatever the hell it was—and leaned over to see a figure glide past on the dirty, red carpet. Must have been who the boy was referring to when he said ‘us.’

There you go, Mr. Podwall. Welcome to The Gate.” The boy handed him a metal key. It was large and cold, ornate like the rest of the hotel. It felt heavy in Joseph's hand.

You're in room 704. Top floor. The elevator isn't in working order I'm afraid.” The boy smiled a far too toothy smile, giggling as he did so.

Joseph didn't get the joke and wasn't about to ask what was so funny.

Leave your luggage here. I'll have someone bring it up to your room.”

It's not that heavy. I can grab it myself,” Joseph said as he reached for his suitcase, but with a sharp movement, the boy cut his hand in front of him as if to say Stop!

Leave it, Joe!”

About the Author

Trey Stone has studied archaeology in England, lived on an Arctic Island for two years, and has more guitars than he has room for (the real problem is that his home is too small). He grew up on a farm in rural, western Norway, and has a bunch of siblings, half-siblings, and in-laws, and is uncle to–oh, I don’t know–twenty or so kids. They’re all pretty awesome, he thinks. It’s difficult to remember who’s who anymore.

Trey has been telling stories for as long as he can remember. He used to create “books” when he was little by folding and stapling a bunch of paper together to write and draw scenes on the pages. He wrote a bunch of short stories when he was younger and tried his hand at a fantasy novel as a teen (but hardly any of that got anywhere). Then he finally wrote his first thriller five years ago and just never stopped. Trey Stone is the author of A State of Despair and The Consequences of Loyalty

Invitation to Hell Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for dark fantasy, romance Invitation to Hell by Amber Bunch. This is the first book in the Goddess of Death series. Read on for more info and a chance to win a book box filled with a signed hardcover edition and a whole bunch of other goodies!

Invitation to Hell is the first book in Amber Bunch's Goddess of Death series and if you like a good paranormal romance novel then this is a book to check out! Go grab your copy today!

Kali watched her mother die as a little girl. It was all so strange and terrifying for her as a young girl. As she got older, it also skewed her way of viewing the world. When strange things happen she questions whether it's truly real or not. So when she's attacked and heals quickly from the wound, she thinks she's lost her mind. But has she? Or is there something more going on? Something that will pull her into a world that she had no idea that it even existed and is going to demand that she become a part of it?

Invitation to Hell is an engaging paranormal romance novel that right from the beginning is going to engage you and pull you into this new twisted world that the author is creating. You'll meet Kali as a young girl, but be prepared for a time skip. I personally wouldn't have minded a bit more of her childhood, going through the adjustments and all that, but I don't mind it too much. She has some great "sisters" and their relationships are really fun to watch.

Things get a bit hot and bothered really quickly - or should I say "out of the blue." It will catch you a bit off guard, but what will really catch you off guard is the next part of that very same scene. I literally did a trouble take. I was like..."woah! wait! what?!"

The story goes from a bit slow and steady to - here comes the drama full force are you ready?! LOL! I'm not kidding. One minute all seems well and then BAM! Brace yourself. That's the whole point of the novel though, I promise. You're going to enjoy it. Kali is learning that the world is not what she thought it was and things are really going to be wild.

One thing that I absolutely love about this book is that in the paperback there are some gorgeous images scattered throughout. I'm a bit disappointed that they aren't included in the digital book as well, because of how much they add to the story, but it is what it is. We can't have everything, but I just know that my fellow e-book readers would love to see those cool images as well.

I'm looking forward to where this author takes us next with this series. I'm choosing to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Amber Bunch, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Commoner's Destiny Review Spotlight

I’m thrilled to share the exciting follow-up to Fred Yu's sword-slashing fantasy, The Orchid Farmer's Sacrifice! Read on to learn more about The Commoner's Destiny!

Fred Yu is back with his much anticipated sequel The Commoner’s Destiny, book two in The Red Crest series. Familiar characters will make their return in this novel, but first we will begin things with a “new” character and watch as his destiny unfolds before him a page at a time.

If you haven’t read Fred Yu’s first book in this series, The Orchid Farmer’s Sacrifice, read that book FIRST! Go get it now. Go on! Go get it. Read it, devour it and then come back to this one. I would tell you that you can read this book if you haven’t and then go back and read the previous book, but where would the fun be in that? Honestly, when I first started reading this book I thought that I could say “you can read this book as a standalone” but that’d be a lie. It’s important to read these books in order. Trust me, when the two stories merge is what will really you get you hyped and excited as you read this novel.

Prepare to meet Chen Han. He’s just a commoner who has amazing martial arts skills. But someone has besmirched his name, and he wishes to find out who and why. Question is – is he prepared for what lies ahead of him? He has no idea what’s in store for him as he finds himself assailed on all sides by those who believe that they are doing the right thing for their country and their honor.

The author’s artistic storytelling weaves a novel that immerses you in the story from beginning to end. You will feel compelled to dig deeper with Han with each turn of the page. Han is on a quest to learn the truth, and it takes him to a variety of places throughout China. He meets a variety of individuals – some friend, some foe. Who is whom though? Can you tell who can be trusted and who will turn around and stab him in the back?

Just like with the Orchid Farmer’s Sacrifice the author drives this story not just with the plot but with the engaging characters. Page by page you follow along with Han’s story as he takes this journey for answers. As the truth is revealed, you the reader will catch the clues a lot faster than the characters. Your jaw is going to be on the floor. Trust me, mine was several times. The secrets and clues hidden throughout this book will spur you on to try and piece together the puzzle that is unfolding before you.

I will admit that I grasped on to certain pieces of information before our hero does because I take the characters at face value. The twists and turns will keep you on your toes constantly. When a particular character acts differently than what you’ve come to expect the author is cluing you in that something just might be coming.

You’re going to absolutely love how this author weaves this story. As you read the author encourages you to imagine the vivid pictures he’s painting with his words in your mind. As you read you can almost see these characters fighting, living, planning, and establishing relationships. You feel that if it were at all possible, if these characters truly existed, that you could visit them in the past and relive these moments with them.

When the storyline of The Commoner’s Destiny and the Orchid Farmer’s Sacrifice merge in this novel, I nearly jumped out of my chair with excitement. Trust me, you’re going to be just as thrilled to reread certain scenes from Han’s point of view and experience what he was thinking and feeling in those particular moments. It’s truly fantastic and this attention to detail is what makes this series truly fantastic. The author is carefully weaving us a beautiful word tapestry that captures our attention and holds us in place studying every detail and absorbing them deep into our hearts.

Han, of course, is the main character of this particular novel, but he’s never truly alone. The beautiful archer is a character to look out for. You’re absolutely going to take a shine to her as you read this book. Be aware though that not all of the characters in this book are citizens of China. The ones who are not catch me by surprise. I make the mistake of assuming that because of the names that they are given that they are all just infighting. That’s not necessarily the case and my quest for answers is what drives me forward with this book.

As with book one, there is an air of mystery that swirls around these characters. The big question – the red crest. What is it really? What is the meaning behind it? Brace yourself, because the author is going to give you some answers with this book. So here’s my question for you fellow reader – are you ready for the revelation that is to come? Follow the clues to the story’s end and prepare for your mind to be blown.

If you are looking for a book that will demand that you read it in one sitting and not put it down until you are done then this is the book for you. If you are someone who loves a good fantasy novel with characters that will engage you and have you cheering for them to the bitter end, then this is the book for you. This historical Asian fantasy novel series is one that no lover of fantasy novels should miss.

I know that when you finish this book that you will be chomping at the bit for book three and to find out what happens next. Just like with book one, book two more than achieves the marks for 5 out of 5 stars. I couldn’t put this book down. I encourage all who enjoy a good fantasy novel to grab this book and dive in. You will not be disappointed in this author’s creation.

Thank you to the author, Fred Yu, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Wasteland Review Spotlight

Author Terry Tyler has put her books on sale for all of her favourite readers, YOU! Wasteland, the sequel Megacity and even the prequel Hope are all on sale for $0.99/ 99p this week! But first, check out my review of this engaging dystopian style novel!

The year? 2061. The location? The UK. The world has changed...a lot! There are now mega-cities. The countryside? Well, there really isn't any. Where the land can be used NutraCorp has taken it over to have their growing farms. Where the land has some use it has been changed into Hope villages where the destitute and those who struggled to "contribute" to society are put. Then...there is the "Wasteland" where those who wish to stay off the grid live. But for how much longer? Change is coming one step at a time, and it's only a matter of time before the powers that be steamroll it all under foot. Unless...unless change comes to stop them.

Prepare to meet Rae. She's a mega-city girl. It's all she's known and she knows the rules. Follow the rules - don't say or do anything that will get you a demerit and a reduction in points and pay and you'll be fine. Don't say anything negative because you simply don't know who's listening. The wrong ear hears what you say? Trouble is quick to follow and then you're being monitored for further problems. Rae's world is about to be rocked when a shocking truth comes to her - she had a family once. But what happened? Should she try to find them? What will she find if she does? What will it mean for her future? Is the risk worth it all?

Welcome to the second book in Terry Tyler's Operation Galton series, Wastelands. This dystopian-style novel paints a vivid and quite disturbing potential image of a dark future. Big corps and the government have taken over and "free speech" is a thing of the past. As are many other things in this not-so-distant future that the author paints a picture of. Of course, the author says that this book is by no means a true reflection of what is to come, but trust me, as you read this book - the possibility sounds all too real. LOL!

Wasteland follows Rae as the world she once knew takes on a more sinister appearance. She begins to really re-evaluate her life and the choices she's made up to this point. On a level, you're really going to feel for her as she discovers that her so-called "friends" are as flighty as they come. Her boyfriend and her "best friend" are absolutely the worst. LOL! But they play their part to the hilt. They both showcase the variety of people who live in the MegaCities and just who they truly are. There are all types and they fit their roles.

One really good aspect of this novel is that the author doesn't just give you the story from Rae's point of view. You get other characters as well. That really helps make this story truly engaging and pulls you further into the storyline. It makes this book hard to put down. You find yourself page-turning to find out what is going to happen next.

While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. The author takes into consideration that either reader are going to need a refresher for book one or are just jumping into this book, so she puts a refresher in to bring you up to speed with everything that is going on up to this book's point.

This is one of this dystopian novel that is a great novel to check out, but it's also one that makes you really think and assess the world around you. Rae does quite a bit of that as she learns that she doesn't know much about the world. The world is changing, and those in control of the information will only reveal so much. Just enough to keep you complacent and happy in your own personal little bubble.

If you're looking for an engaging dystopian novel then this is a book/series that I recommend you check out. The author conveys an engaging and thrilling novel without getting preachy about the effects that the world is/has faced in this book.

I'm choosing to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. The beginning was a bit slow, but once you get further into the novel and begin moving around the story really picks up. I recommend that you take advantage of the on-going sale of the entire series, but you're going to want to read them all to find out how it all begins and what happens next.

Thank you to the author, Terry Tyler, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this novel!

Terry Tyler is the author of twenty-four books available from Amazon, the latest being 'Where There's Doubt', about a romance scammer. She is currently at work on a post apocalyptic series, which will probably take the form of three novellas. Proud to be independently published, Terry is an avid reader and book reviewer, and a member of Rosie Amber's Book Review Team.

Aside from writing and reading, Terry loves The Walking Dead, South Park, abandoned and lonely places, history, the sea, and going for long walks where there are lots of trees. She lives in the north east of England with her husband.
