Excerpt

I could have smelled it from a mile away, the scent of death mingling with that of the wildlife and mucky water winding its way through the river. It haunts the area, and I know I’ll go home smelling like it, same as I always do. There’s no amount of body wash, detergent, or scent beads in the world that can rid me of it, because I carry it in my heart even more than I do on my clothes.

The surrounding area is clustered with police, crime scene personnel, and a handful of rubberneckers. That’s not unusual. Murders especially seemed to draw out a bunch of true crime obsessed lurkers. I can’t blame them. Curiosity about death is what leads a lot of people like me into working in homicide in the first place.

I wonder if any other local jurisdictions have come across anything as horrifying as this. As soon as I get back, I ought to put out some feelers. Other cops tend to keep things pretty close to the chest about this sort of thing, but you would think a decomposed body of yet another young woman would be enough to get them to share some info. Especially with such similar circumstances to the body we found several months ago.

This poor angel washed up a couple of days prior, I’m guessing, and based on the amount of insect and wildlife damage, that wasn’t when she died. Decomp looks like probably about a month or two’s worth, but I need to wait to see what the medical examiner says.

My heart cries for these young women, and I try to not let my eyes do the same. I wear a flat expression so that other cops feel better. It’s hard to do your job when you’re busy dealing with a lead detective who’s in tears.

According to one of our crime scene techs I talked to by the yellow tape, there’s nothing apart from the strangulation marks and petechial hemorrhaging in both eyes. So far, no hint of DNA, but the tech had only been there an hour or so at the time. No identification, or wallet. Her clothes show normal wear and tear given her current condition.

The lack of personal items is odd. It’s the same as the last case. Who leaves the house without at least their phone these days? People in their twenties and thirties use their phones like another appendage. I can also remember many, many teenage lectures from my dad about remembering my license when I went out. “You never know what kind of creeps are out there. And you can’t always trust the other drivers.” Always the optimist. I smile, but then I start to wonder what kind of families were missing these women, and I instantly deflate like a balloon.

I approach the body and squat down, careful to not let my booties knock around any potential evidence. I think for a couple of minutes, my eyes scanning for any obvious clues. “Anything stand out?” I ask, already predicting the answer.

This tech just joined the squad and is eager to prove himself. Police precincts can be a bit like dick measuring contests, and new hires get a little insecure. He clears his throat, “Okay, well, nothing yet, ma’am. Just the signs of strangulation. It sucks, doesn’t it? When these bastards cover their tracks so well. I hope the ME comes back with better news. Just about done with my pictures and then I’m gonna head back to the lab to take a look at a couple of skin samples.”

I nod, knowing he’s doing the best he can. “Good work, Aaron. Keep it up.”

He grins. “Thanks, boss.”

I return the grin. “I’m not your boss. Just trying to solve a mystery, same as you.” I head back to the group of officers clustered next to their squad cars, Phil holding court with his newfound confidence. It’s good to see him finding his footing.

They stop talking as soon as I get there, and Phil holds his hand up to me as if to say, Chill. I know for damn certain what the uniforms all thought. It’s not too hard to guess. I’m a black female cop who passed them all up for a promotion. What they seem to forget is that the promotion involved scoring well on exams and being able to run more than a tenth of a mile without getting winded. They’re supposed to stay in shape, too, but it’s easier for them to slack the lower they are on the food chain.

Make sure the scene stays blocked off, and keep the press away. Until we know what we’re dealing with, the last thing we need is the media fucking this all up for us. You know how they are.” I spot a couple of vans approaching in the distance. “Vultures. Let’s head back, you two.” I indicate a couple of the cops. “Phil, I want to talk this over with you.”

Beauty and the Alchemist Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for Beauty and the Alchemist! This delightful fantasy cozy mystery novel will keep you page-turning to the end! Prepare for fun, murder, and some delicious recipes! Read on for more!

Beauty and the Alchemist is the first book by Elle Hartford in her Alcehmical Tales series. For readers looking for a new and fun twist on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast this is a book that you are absolutely not going to want to miss out on. The author is going to appeal to your imagination from the beginning and do an excellent job keeping you engaged to the very end. Prepare to meet fun and unique characters that will have you coming back for more.

Red is a traveling alchemist. She thought that she had found a place for herself outside of the town, but you know Fate is. Pulls you right back in when you thought you'd gotten out. LOL! Well, when a murderer manges to escape, the town is put on high alert. Red is told to (ahem) to "stay out of it" and to "stay out of trouble." Sounds simple enough right? Well, what do you do when your senses push you to check something out and you get more than you bargained for? Well, that's exactly what happens in the first couple of chapters. LOL!

From there things just get things only get crazier. There is tons of magic, drama, mystery and a nice amount of fantasy elements to keep you page-turning in this novel. There is even a lovely map at the beginning of this book that lays out the town and surrounding area. So you get a nice idea of how things look. I personally love novels that have a nice little map that adds a nice touch of detail.

You're really going to appreciate the amount of humor in this novel as well. Of course, there is always going to be one or two characters who will have you whipping your head around pining them with narrow eyes. Gloria just so happens to be one of those characters. You'll meet her soon enough, but before you even do you'll understand why she's not anyone's favorite in that town. LOL!

Red is a fun character, and with her companion, William, she won't be alone in her investigations. There are a nice amount of layers to this story to keep you engaged. I'd absolutely love to read more from this author in the future, and I look forward to the next book in this series. I highly encourage you to grab this fun cozy mystery novel. You won't regret it.

I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Elle Hartford, and Silver Dagger Book Tours, for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to what comes next!

The Alchemical Tales Book 1

by Elle Hartford

Genre: Cozy Fantasy Mystery

In this magical mix-up of fairy tales and murder, Little Red Riding Hood solves the mystery at the heart of Beauty and the Beast . . .

What does it take to overcome a curse?

Traveling alchemist Red settles into life as a shopkeeper in rural Belville and expects to focus on her potions. But crime stops for no woman. Neither does Red’s friend, police officer Thorn! When a beastly criminal escapes to a nearby abandoned castle and is found murdered, Thorn immediately suspects Luca, a meek-mannered bookseller–not to mention Red’s best friend.

Red knows that there’s more to the castle–and the murder–than meets the eye. But as she rushes to prove Luca’s innocence, she’s beset by a not-dead-yet ghost, a beautiful and ill-tempered suspect, and a horde of mysterious mist creatures that terrify the town. Oh, and then there’s the series of lost books that hold the key to the castle’s curse! If Red and her friends can’t find the books and solve the mystery, Luca might not be the only one in trouble. But in idyllic Belville, appearances can be deceiving. Red will need all of her alchemical prowess and all the help she can get in order to uncover the truth behind this twisted tale.

This special second edition includes a new epilogue, recipes, and a sneak peek at book two of The Alchemical Tales.

When we hit the third corner, I stopped dead. It felt as though a bucket of ice-water raced down my back. The darkness was so thick that even with my goggles, I could barely see beyond my own hand. The front of the castle stretched away into inkiness.

Officer Thorn, already a pace ahead and nearly disappearing, looked over her shoulder. “What’s wrong?”

Something here,” I mumbled incoherently. “There’s something wrong with being here. Don’t you feel it?”

To tell you the truth, I’ve never been haunted, so I wouldn’t know what it feels like,” Thorn replied blithely.

I sucked air into my lungs. The fastest way out of here is forward, I reminded myself. Gritting my teeth, I began following the officer once more. “Just stay close, okay? No bounding off after evidence or what have you.”

She looked back and grinned, her long teeth flashing. “The sooner we catch Owl, the better.”

I don’t think Owl is what’s making these shadows,” I said.

Thorn was impervious. “Then it could be Gloria alone, and that’s worse. See, Red, your problem is—”

I never got to hear what my problem was, unfortunately. The grass we’d been edging along gave way to a stone patio set a few inches below the surrounding ground, and I stumbled. With that jarring step came recognition of the fact that we were right in front of the castle’s main entrance, and another bone-penetrating chill.

Wh-wh-whatever it is y-you want to s-see, it must be h-here,” I said, my teeth chattering.

It’s just a little cold, Red. Are all islanders such wimps?”

Hush, and look around!” I insisted. I was starting to think that maybe Thorn hadn’t ever been haunted simply because she refused to see anything other than what she wanted to.

It’s the front of the castle,” she informed me matter-of-factly. She began stalking about the patio, with me close on her heels. “I was on the inside team during the search earlier, so I missed this. Nice carvings on the doorway. Old and worn down, but they’ve held up well considering. Good sturdy door. See that ironwork across the front? Guess we’re not dealing with the fey, eh? And what’s this—gems inlaid in the doors, too. Surprised those haven’t walked off over time. Maybe they’re locked down—get it? Ha ha. What’s this?”

I’d only been paying half-attention to Thorn’s monologue, but the repetition of the phrase in a new tone of surprise caught my ear. I turned from looking over my shoulder to see that Thorn held something small and rectangular in one large hand.

Did you just find a book?” I asked, startled.

Did I?” She handed the object to me for inspection. As I took it, though, the air around us thickened. I had to hold the slim volume very close to my face to see the bark binding. My gaze drifted over the title and the gold leaf to notice that, rather than blackness, a silver fluidity filled my vision.

Why is it foggy?” I tucked the book into a pocket in my cloak for safe-keeping and frowned as I looked up. Officer Thorn looked just as surprised as me. I could see her face well, despite the cloudiness, because the moonlight had reappeared. It bounced off the water in the air. The world was brighter now, but it was also much closer.

Officer Thorn’s club rose, sending swirls ricocheting through the air. “Never mind the fog, Red. Look here, at the corner of the doorway. Doesn’t that look like—”

Again, I was destined not to hear the officer’s thoughts. Only fair, really, considering how often she interrupted mine. But I wasn’t thinking that at the time. At the time, I was screaming like a banshee, because something had grabbed me from behind.

Elle adores cozy mysteries, fairy tales, and above all, learning new things. As a historian and educator, she believes in the value of stories as a mirror for complicated realities. She currently lives in New Jersey with a grumpy tortoise and a three-legged cat.

Rule of the Aurora King Review Spotlight

Welcome to the tour for the gorgeous next installment in the Artefacts of Ouranos series, Rule of the Aurora King by Nisha J. Tuli!

Rule of the Aurora King is the second book by Nisha J. Tuli in her Artefacts of Ouranos series, and if you're not reading this series you are SERIOUSLY missing out! OMG! Go grab book one and dive in, because you're going to be eager for more by the time you finish. Book two is just as good as the first and will absolutely leave you howling for book three. You're gonna have to settle down though because book three isn't available yet.

Rule of the Aurora King picks up a few weeks after the end of Trial of the Sun Queen. Things went just a teensy bit left with Lor and Atlas at the end of that book. Then, SURPRISE! She gets a "chance" at - well, at least leaving THAT kingdom and going somewhere else. Not exactly where she thought she'd be going, but an improvement nonetheless. Yes? Yes. Because let's be real...Atlas...yeah, he was having a meltdown and it was best she get out of there ASAP. Now though? She may have landed herself in quite a bit of a predicament.

This story continues following Lor and alternates between her and a couple other characters in this series. Lor has secrets that she learned while with Atlas, but can she keep those secrets or will her new "captor" wring them from her? Now, know this - not much has changed with Lor. She's still "spunky", sassy, and takes nothing from anyone.

Yes, there will be some face-palming again with this character. You'd think that she'd chill out...just a little and calm down. Assess the situation at hand and then act accordingly. NOPE! She's hellbent on being hell on wheels and is intent on making everyone suffer. LOL! It's not all bad, but it'd be nice if she'd stop and think every now and again. Remember, you get more flies with something sweet than you do vinegar and bitterness.

I get it though! She's had a rough life! But not EVERYONE is responsible for her predicament. There is a bit of chilling out, but never get too comfortable when it comes to her. Nadir is an interesting character. He wants to know what Lor is hiding. He's rough around the edges, but he has his own agenda as well. Together? They make a dyno of a team. It's interesting to see how they come together in this story.

Now, if you are one of those people who absolutely hate cliffhanger endings...I hate to tell you but...this one has another whammy of a cliffhanger. You'll get thrown something new at the end chapter, and you'll be left wanting to chunk your book/device and howl. LOL! Trust me...the author warns you in the beginning of the book and I still howled at the end. Probably woke the dead. SORRY 'BOUT THAT! lol! Honestly, I regret nothing. Just that I have to wait for the next book. I'm sure it will be worth it though.

I love the twists, the turns, the drama, and the budding romance. We are promised a HEA and I'm holding the author to it because this book is giving me all the feels. LOL! Are there some predictable elements? Yes. Is it a negative necessarily? No. Some aspects in a novel will always be predictable, but it's okay. Because when that one twist you don't expect comes and SMACKS you upside the head? Yeah, totally worth it. LOL!

So? What's my rating for this book? 4.5 out of 5 stars. Lor needs to chill. Seriously. Like I said, she's had it rough. I get it. But you are not owed anything girl. Try a little sweetness. It will get you further.

Grab this series, devour them, and then...prepare for the next. I'm hoping that I can read it soon. LOL!

Thank you to the author, Nisha J. Tuli, and R&R Book Tours, for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to what comes next!

Thank YOU for taking the time to stop by and read my thoughts on this novel! I hope you enjoyed my review and that you'll come back again soon or even consider subscribing to my blog so you never miss a post! Stay tuned because more is coming in the days and weeks to come!                                             Rule of the Aurora King (Artefacts of Ouranos #2)

Publication Date: April 6th, 2023

Genre: Fantasy Romance/ Fantasy/ Fae

I am not his conquest. I am not his to claim. I am my own castle.”

Freed from the golden clutches of the Sun King, Lor now finds herself in the hands of Nadir, the Aurora Prince. Convinced she’s hiding something; he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make her talk. But Lor knows the value of secrets—she’s been keeping them her entire life—and she’s not letting hers go without a fight.

When Lor and Nadir team up to search for a lost item that holds the key to her past and her future, she isn’t sure if she can trust him. All she knows is she won’t fall for his promises and make the same mistakes again.

Lor also hasn’t forgotten her vow to destroy the Aurora King. As Atlas hunts her across Ouranos, Lor plots to bring down the Imperial Fae who took everything. But she soon realizes that the future of the continent is about so much more than just her shattered legacy.

The Rule of the Aurora King is the second book in the Artefacts of Ouranos series and combines romance, intrigue, action, and adventure. If you love enemies to lovers, fated mates, and fake dating, don’t miss this exciting next installment!

Trial of the Sun Queen (Artefacts of Ouranos #1)

Ten women. A deadly contest. Only one can win the Sun King’s heart.

Lor has endured twelve long years of torment under the Aurora King’s rule. Her only desire is to get free and pay him back for every moment of misery she’s endured.

When a surprise release finds her in the hands of the Sun King, Lor is thrust into the spotlight as she competes against nine other Tributes for the role of queen. If she wins his heart, she’ll earn her freedom and finally get her revenge.

But Lor doesn’t belong in the Sun Queen Trials. Not only does she not understand why she was freed, she isn’t a citizen of the Sun King’s court. The other Tributes resent her presence and will stop at nothing to ensure Lor is wiped off the gameboard, permanently.

Now Lor must win, because if she loses, she dies. Or worse, she’ll be sent back into the hands of the Aurora King.

This glittering fae romance is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Jennifer Armentrout, and Raven Kennedy. Trial of the Sun Queen is the first book in a series with an eventual happy ever after.
