Lendercide Review Spotlight

Lendercide is a mystery suspense thriller by Allen Madding. The author will take you on a quick thrill ride as the characters deal with a variety of situations.

Colleen Smithwick’s job at the bank as a loan processor has gradually drained her down to almost nothing. Her co-workers and superiors have really not helped the situation with their demands for faster work while not doing their own part to contribute to a more streamlined process. So, when bodies start dropping – well, half the staff feels little to no remorse. Who is committing the murders? Who will be next? Will Colleen’s marriage survive the temptation of the handsome young detective? You’re going to have to read to find out how this story pans out for all involved, but brace yourself for an ending that you just won’t ever see coming.

Lendercide is an engaging novel that will keep you page-turning as you follow the various characters in this book. Colleen is the main focus of the story, but not the only focus. The story is told more from a third person point of view, which is okay, but it leaves some things to be desired.

As you read, you’ll understand Colleen’s frustrations with certain of her co-workers. They make demands, but don’t do their part. It would absolutely drive the average individual to plot a heinous act or two. Granted, the keyword is plot – but would you go so far as to actually commit an act of violence against said individual?

Throughout this book, you will question as to whether Colleen has anything to do with the two murders that happen. One will sound...implausible, but the other...well, eyebrows will rise once you discover the cause of death for that particular character.

Watch out for the red herrings that the author is going to conveniently drop here and there throughout the book. Obviously, we won’t disclose as to which ones to watch out for, but as the characters interact you’re going to begin to pick at particular threads. By all means, pick away, but be careful at pulling too much at that particular thread.

What this book could have used more of is more depth, and more detail. Things move quickly, but there are moments where things move too quickly. More detail would have been nice to flesh this story out more and to really help create mental images. It also would have helped make the story more realistic and the characters more life-like. As it is, the storyline takes characters from one extreme to the next. For the average person, the characters won’t come off as realistic as they could.

When the first murder is announced, rather abruptly by the detective in charge, it would have been nice if at least someone feigned surprise. As it was, the detective should have seriously considered all potential suspects since from the tone of the story, few if any showed any surprise or empathy toward the deceased. Regardless of whether the person was a saint or not (emphasis on NOT) the fact that none showed any surprise is very telling.

Some details should have been omitted. One particular example is the naming of Colleen’s shoes. You’re rarely going to see anyone saying “Christian Louboutin.” Those iconic stiletto heels with the famous red soles are simply called – Louboutins. Naming them once with the full name would have been fine, but twice in such closeness in the passage is redundant and unnecessary.

Unfortunately, the realism of the characters doesn’t translate in this book. None of them showcase anything that would make them seem more true to life. Some stories generate those types of characters, however, this book is not one of them. Assertive women are always something great, and when you get closer to the end you’ll gain some enlightenment when it comes to Colleen. However, before that you are probably going to find her overly aggressive in her “flirtations” with the Detective. The only place you get a taste of realism is when the characters are in their respective workplaces.

Detective Gary unfortunately comes off more as a green-horn than a seasoned vet. The reason I say this is because when he’s asked about the case instead of stating, “I can’t comment on an active/ongoing investigation” he proceeds to give information that has yet to be released to the public. Especially to someone who may or may not still be a suspect. You just don’t know, because there is no clarification given concerning who’s been cleared of suspicion and who hasn’t been.

Granted, this book is not a police procedural novel, and Detective Gary is not the primary focus of the story. That being said, it still would have been advantageous to the storyline to have pieces of that particular element included in. It would have added to the drama and suspense of the story as you would be lead to think that certain characters are now “safe” and would be easily dismissed out of mind.

Lendercide has a lot of good elements going for it, but it’s lack of detail and depth cause this book to fall short of it’s full potential. Give this book some fleshing out in the right places, and necessary details and it will absolutely be a novel that readers would flock to and devour.

This book is a quick read and will engage you, but it will also leave you with more questions than answers. I honestly would not mind a sequel to this story though, because the ending will leave you eager to find out what potentially happens next.

This book rates 3.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion. The storyline has solid potential, but just doesn’t fully measure up. Details and depth are missing to really make this novel shine, and as such elements are missing, this book falls short. The author absolutely has potential to develop into a great writer, and I look forward to more of their work in the future.

Pros:

- Engaging storyline

- Good mystery/thriller element

- Nice amount of red herrings

- Twisted ending

Cons:

- Not enough detail

- Needed more depth

- Characters unrealistic

- Some details needed to be edited out

Thanks to the author, Allen Madding, for the opportunity to read and review his book.

A Night of Wings and Starlight (Eternal Night #1)

Breaking the curse will risk her heart, her life, and the future she never thought possible.

Before Arya was Chosen, she knew nothing of what lay waiting in the eternal night—certainly not alluring yet arrogant winged Watchers, a cursed queen, nor the possibility that she could be more than a runner, carrying messages through the vampyre-infested wastelands of Valdihr.

But the biggest surprise waiting in the dark is the brazen Watcher who sparks her heart and calls her a Huntress.

A hundred years shrouded in darkness and Arya is the only one who can finally bring back the dawn. With a blessing that marks her for death and an infuriatingly tantalizing man at her side, Arya must embrace her calling and her courage in order to face the danger lurking in the shadows. Because the night holds more than just secrets, and the monsters are closer than she realizes.

Where David Threw Stones Review Spotlight

Welcome to the tour for Where David Threw Stones by Elyse Hoffman. Perfect for fans of The Book Thief.

Where David Threw Stones is an engaging historical fiction novel that the minute you start reading, you're not going to want to put this book down.

David is a little Jewish boy who recently lost his parents to a terrible car accident. They were murdered and while he was in the car with them, he survived the crash. He was a step away from being put into the system, but his paternal grandfather stepped forward to claim him. Now, he's off to a small town of Brennenbach, Germany. This small town houses a dark secret. David's grandfather is determined to shielf him from it, but then the family pup, Mozart, goes missing - David takes a dangerous risk. He's been told - don't leave the house after a certain time, and he's about to find out why.

David is an engaging character that will have you feeling a variety of emotions as you read this story. He's a Jewish boy living in the aftermath of World War II. There is still anti-Semitism feelings running rampant throughout Germany. So it shouldn't come as any surprise to the young boy that Brennenbach is no exception. He proudly wears his Kippah, but his grandfather shows signs that it just might not be a good idea. David's guilt plagues him concerning his parents, so he refuses to remove it. By doing so, it sheds light on a secret that his grandfather has been keeping for years.

I found this book to be so engaging I couldn't put it down. There were moments in this book that I had mixed feelings toward David. One minute I was feeling bad for him, and then I was disappointed in him. I totally understood his desire to stick to his faith and the standards that they hold. However, when it causes chaos and loss for his grandfather I was disappointed in him. Of course, he had no idea of that particular fact, and I thought - "well, if the grandfather had simply said something" but would it have really mattered? Who knows.

The deeper the story goes, the more you learn about the characters. You get flashbacks in the appropriate areas and it really fleshes the story out even more. You're eyes are absolutely going to blow wide when the curse makes an appearance in the storyline. It adds another level of drama to the story as David finds himself in quite the predicament again and again. Things go well for awhile, but then all it takes one misstep.

There are twists, turns, surprises, and so much more in this book. I absolutely love when the story ties into the title as well. It's absolutely perfect.

This book is a must read for lovers of historical fiction with unique twists that will keep them coming back for more. I've never read "The Book Thief" or "Beyond the Tracks" but if you've read those books and enjoyed them, then I'm sure you will enjoy this book as well. The attention to detail, the character development all lend themselves to create a truly engaging story. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I am rating this book a well earned 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Elyse Hoffman, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Nazi ghosts that infest Brennenbach are just as dangerous as they were in life. They’re hunting for David, thinking he is the last member of a family they’ve been ordered to destroy.

The Fires of Aileryan Review Spotlight

To celebrate the release of the second book in The Fires of Aileryan series, Heart of Flame, we are sharing both gorgeous books with you all! Read on for more info and treat yourself to an epic fantasy journey.

The world has been reshaped, fire magic is outlawed and is feared by those who don't understand it. Fire users are rare, but the ones that are found tend to be "removed" from this world for fear of their powers and how unpredictable they are. So, when a young girl manifests the powers of fire, her life changes forever. Her secret exposed, and now...one will seek to exploit her and use her for their own gain.

Shadow of Fire is absolutely one of those books that the minute you pick this book up you better be prepared to clear your schedule and devour this book. Ash, the main character, has a secret, and one that she's held on to for a long time. She fears people's reaction to her powers, and rightfully so. Fire drips out of her when her emotions get the best of her. There is no one to teach her how to control them. One of her friends, took the blame for a fire accident, and now she's one down.

There is a lot at play and just in the first few chapters of this book! You're going to be absolutely blown away and it's just book one! There's more to come!! You're literally going to be wanting to yell at the characters are certain ones are going to show themselves as two-faced. You can't trust them and they are working behind the scenes towards their own end-game. What that is exactly? Well, you're just going to have to read to find that out!

Ash is an interesting character, but it's really nice to know that she has friends in her corner. They may not always be able to be there at her side, but they are there. You're going to be curious about the friend who took the fall for Ash, but just hang in there. I know I kept worrying that something really bad had happened to him, but I was able to breathe easy after awhile. LOL!

If you're looking for some good books to check out then I highly recommend this series. There is so much good stuff going on and you're literally going to grab book one, devour it and repeat with book two. Trust me, book two isn't going to just sit there after you read book one. Book two is going to whisper to you and demand that you continue forward and keep you begging for more.

I'm rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Kate Shumacher, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book(s).

Read on for more about these books and be sure to check out my fellow bloggers as they share their thoughts and opinions on these books! See you next time!

                                                                    Shadow of Fire

Publication Date: May 5th, 2022

Genre: Fantasy/ Multiple POV

Length: 370 pages

A potent power is about to be unleashed.

Forbidden and forged in flame.

Control over the elements is a gift from the Gods, but since the creation of the Rift, fire magic has been outlawed in Merawuld. The Rift is a source of mystery, fear, and, for some, a tempting source of power.

Ash is a fire caster who has spent years hiding her magic, but when her explosive powers reveal themselves she is imprisoned by the Mage Council. Ash’s powers are coveted by the High Mage, who seeks to use her as a pawn against not only his enemies, but his allies as well.

With the Bone Mother’s winter fast approaching, the fae Princess vows to fight against the corrupting influence of power, forming an alliance whose success rests on a human man’s desire for peace; a man who must decide if he will play the game he’s inherited or begin one of his own.

But in Aileryan, the Gods have their own plans. As the Mother of All turns the wheel of the year, the land is brought to the edge of war. Loyalty and courage will be sorely tested as paths intertwine and Fate plays her hand.

If Ash can’t learn to control her magic, the scheming of gods and mortals could spell doom for them all.

Excerpt

Laeli jumped as the sound of steel striking steel cut through the night. She slipped into a crouch, buckling on her scabbard, sliding the twin swords against her back and crept to the opening of the cairn.

Bran shouted a single word. Run.

As wings of light fluttered across the dark pit of the sky, Laeli saw him, his lithe body ducking and weaving around a sword wielded by a tall man in a cloak of fur. Two dead men lay on the ground, Bran’s dagger protruding from a chest. As Laeli watched, Bran’s opponent crouched and swept his leg wide, catching Bran off guard. Her companion tumbled to the ground and, before he could get to his feet, a sword swung through the air in a precise arc.

Laeli stared in horror as Bran’s head was swiftly sliced from his body. Slowly, so slowly, it fell, toppling to the ground to bounce and roll away. Laeli’s dinner rose like a snake and she turned to the side and vomited.

The sky opened, and as veins of light cracked the black canvas of night, the man in furs looked up and saw her. His sword glinted as he approached, blood dripping hypnotically to the ground.

Bran’s blood; fae blood.

Without another thought, Laeli sprang from the cairn and sprinted for the safety of the forest. The trees reached for her, inviting her in; she bent her head and dove between their trunks, taking shelter in their branches, in the roots that snaked from the earth and the rocks and soft grass that spread across the forest floor. The sky ripped apart again, illuminating the trees, the forest bending and swaying in the fierce wind as the storm intensified.

She pushed on, running at a reckless pace that no human could match, until her lungs burned and she fell to her knees in a puddle of dirty water, her breath coming in pants that shook her to the bone. She was still a long way from the border, from safety.

Laeli took a deep breath, preparing to run again, but the point of a sword pressed into her spine.

Get up, Witch.’ The voice was low, husky, his breathing quick.

Genre: Fantasy/ Multiple POV

Length: 536 pages

Fires that curse, fires that heal,
And all the while, so turns the wheel…

With the Queen of Merawuld confined to her bed and the city of Tyllcarric in the iron grasp of the High Mage, war is closing in on all horizons for Ash and Senan. Hellbent on eliminating any threats to the fae throne, Kiarda of Veshlir has raised an army to claim her prize — and she will not be stopped.

Meanwhile, across the border, change is afoot in Estilleon.

Thalion’s men are ready for rebellion, but when the first rush of power ends, he finds himself forced to toe the line between strength and brutality. By his side, Laeli is a stranger in the human world — caught between love and loyalty in a land that stifles her voice.

As conflict escalates across the land of Aileryan, those with power clash amidst a sea of ideals, dreams and greed, forcing the most battle-scarred to overcome their demons and prove they are a force to be reckoned with.

For that which has been dormant for so long is about to burst forth, and when the winter solstice arrives, all will be at the mercy of the Gods…
