Blending of the Sands Review Spotlight

Blending of the Sands continues the story of Harmen and Imani as the quest to bring change continues. Blending of the Sands continues where Sands of Ruin left off, moving forward with our two main characters striving to not just survive all that the world is throwing at them but to make it back to each other. This will be no easy task, especially for Harmen, but it’s something that must be done...for the sake of all.

Blending of theSands’ cover continues with the primary image of the sands and dunes that defined book one. Where book one had the compass, an heirloom from Harmen’s family, book two has an array of items that will be familiar to most readers of the series. The blue scarf that Harm gifted to Imani, the blending pendant he intends to give her, and a pair of crossed daggers. The first two items will be familiar, but the last? Not so much. It all simply comes together to draw readers into diving into this book to discover what hides inside.

Blending of theSands is the second book in R.M. Muller’s Sands of Ruin series. Sands of Ruin, book one, left readers with the question of what happens next to our heroes? Both Harmen and Imani have been taken captive by the Guardians. Charlie is a captive as well, held by own his own brother, the Chancellor. Now what? Imani was on the verge of being hanged, but with the capture of Harm everything shifted.

Now, this book picks up over a month after we were left with the ending of book one. Harm is being held in the prison. Every day he must endure what the Guardians put him through. The questioning. The abuse. The demands for answers of what he knows concerning the device. No matter how honest he is with them, they extract pain and suffering from him. His only hope? That somewhere out there...Imani is still alive.

The first time Harmen landed in prison, he had help getting out. This time? It appears that there will be no help coming for him. It would seem that he’s on his own. The hits don’t just come physically though. The Guardians are seeking to break his spirit...and that comes in a heartbreaking blow when they tell him the last thing that he’d ever want to hear.

Imani is going through her own personal hell. She’s no longer being subjected to the prison, but one can hardly say that her “accommodations” are much better. One would hardly want to find themselves in the “care” of their enemy. Granted, this particular captor is better than her father, but not by much. Can you guess who?

Blending of theSands continues with the quest to fix what the Chancellor has broken. The people are suffering and dying and the time for change must come soon. But this book takes readers deeper. We explored the sands in the Sands of Ruin. Now, Blending of the Sands is going to introduce readers to a new area – the forest/jungle area. Cue jaw-drop, right?! LOL!

What do you mean there’s more out there than just the sands and dunes? What do you mean that there is something separating everything into “sections” and people are living uniquely in them!?! Yeah, prepare to delve deeper as our characters discover the truth that is out there, and then come to being able to explore the forest area for themselves.

It’s a nice element of enticement to draw readers deeper into this book. Imani and Harm continue to face a variety of challenges. They find help along their separate journeys. Harm reconnects with Jonah and Enid. Imani finds some unexpected help from a kind villager, whom she repays with a dark service.

All the while Harm is still being hunted, probably more viciously now than before. Fletcher really has a been in his “bonnet” when it comes to Harm. But is there something more to it than meets the eye?

Where Sands of Ruin played jump rope with the line between YA and Upper YA/New Adult, Blending of the Sands takes that step and shifts fully into New Adult territory with multiple sex scenes between the new couple. The scenes aren’t overly graphic and steamy, so readers who prefer just the “basic” of elements, no more and no less, will be pleased.

Wondering if there is any character development? The answer is yes. There are new characters introduced into the story with the “discovery” of a new area. Secrets are coming to light, and Harmen and Imani are learning new things. But as they are learning new things, and discovering themselves, th taint of the Chancellor and Fletcher is reaching further and further in an attempt to draw Harmen back out and extinguish the hope that his very existence threatens to bring.

The closer this story comes to a close, the more the author begins to set the stage for a shake-up in the story. You’re going to get little clues here and there, but apparently, the characters won’t be in on what’s to come. Of course, neither will you, the reader, but we think you’ll handle things better than they will when it all plays out.

Just as book one ended on a cliffhanger with a twist, Blending of the Sands will be no exception. Thanks to some of the clues and hints dropped we weren’t as tormented with this ending, but that doesn’t mean that the characters aren’t impacted negatively. We’ll have to wait and see what comes next for Harmen and Imani. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be really interesting.

Pros:

  • Engaging storyline
  • Twists and turns
  • Introduction of new characters
  • Page-turner

Cons:

  • None of merit

Cover Score: 9.8/10

4.5 out of 5 stars

Sword of the Seven Sins Review Spotlight

Sword of the Seven Sins is the first book in Emily Colin’s The Seven Sins series. With the tagline “In a world ruled by sin, love is a dangerous game.” This book whispers a promise of intensity that will not be denied.

The first thing you see when you look at this book is the stunning cover that will quickly grab your attention. You’ll find yourself lured in by the whorls, the gorgeous flowers, and the blade that takes center stage along with the title of the book. All of it comes together to will you to pick it up and open it.

What will you find inside? You’ll discover a world reshaped by climate change, the greed of power, and the life the world once knew...is no more. Author Emily Colin will weave together a story that will keep you page-turning to the end packed with twists and surprises, and a simmering romance that will keep you coming back for more.

Sword of the SevenSins begins The Seven Sins series by introducing readers to the FMC, Eva. When we meet Eva she is a young girl. She’s ten years old and about to witness her first execution. Little does she know the part that she will soon play in the death of the condemned man.

It’s not long after her introduction that you quickly get the sense that there is something truly different about Eva. She’s not like the other children around her. You won’t be the only one who notices this difference though. There is another who notices, and they draw attention to her due to this. Cue ramping up of tension! So soon in the book, too!

This is just the first step in what is to come concerning Eva’s life and future. Sword ofthe Seven Sins doesn’t stay long in her youth and quickly jumps ahead seven years. The time for changes in her life are now at hand. She’s already set her sights on a particular path for herself, but that choice...will not be allowed. Another path has been decided for her, and she will be made to walk that path...and see how well-suited for it she is.

Sword of the SevenSins focuses mainly on Eva, but in her first chapter, there is hinted that another character will play a part in her life. You’ll quickly know who this character is because of a subtle interaction. Who is this other character? His name is Ari. He chose the path of an enforcer, a guardian, what some would even call...an assassin. He is a bellator – skilled fighters who are the guards, the enforcers, the death dealers of this new world.

He’s drawn to Eva. He doesn’t know why, but there is a connection there between them. She in turn is drawn to him, but they both know the risks. The regular ways of life are no more. Physical contact of certain types is viewed as a sin. Certain emotions? A sin. It’s literally tread carefully or you’ll be accused, condemned, and punished for a sin.

The big question you’re surely asking? Where is this going? Well, wait until Eva joins the bellatorum. You’re going to be thinking one thing – “Surely she’s going to struggle with this, right?” Well, the author throws in quite a lot with this character to keep readers on their toes. But we’re not the only ones who are kept on their toes.

When it comes to this book, once you start reading, you’re going to be lured deeper and deeper into the storyline. It will be hard to put this book down as you delve deeper for answers to brewing questions. What makes Eva so unique? Where are these brewing emotions going between her and Ari? What will be the consequences should they be caught?

Eva is absolutely a strong character. She holds her own throughout the story and will surprise you more than once. Author Colin has embedded more than a few secrets throughout this story. They’re like little treasures for readers to discover that will egg you to dig deeper and learn more.

There was one particular twist in this story that had us literally saying “Bloody hell.” LOL! No, we don’t always say this, but in this one particular moment...it fits perfectly. But the twists and edge-of-your-seat drama doesn’t end there. Let’s just say that this author knows how to tell a story, and it shows!

Sword of the Seven Sins is an “upper YA” fantasy novel. You get hints of fantasy here and there. Not a lot but just enough to remind you that this is a fantasy novel with some “modern-day” touches here and there to remind you of the world that once was. It all blends together to create a unique story that you’re going to want to keep coming back to.

Now! Does this book end on a cliffhanger? A mild one. You get some answers to some pressing questions, and then you’re left with a nice romance scene that whispers of more to come. Author Colin is going to build some anticipation as to what is to come next, so stay engaged and be sure to grab book two!

Pros:

  • Engaging storyline
  • Tons of drama
  • Subtle romance
  • Twists
  • Page-turner

Cons:

  • None of note

Cover Rating: 9.5

Overall Book Rating: 9.8 (5 out of 5 stars)

Sands of Ruin Review Spotlight

Readers, are you on the search for something new? A new book that whisks you away to a dystopian world looking for a brighter future? A second chance at a better life? A story with faulty characters whom you can relate to? A story that will grab you and leave you eager for book two? Then look no further. Author R.M. Muller has got you covered. Step into the pages of Sands of Ruin...and be prepared to swept away into a desert world...eager for change.

Sands of Ruin is the first book in R.M. Muller’s Sands of Ruin series. Young Harmen isn’t so young. Not really. He is facing his last year of the Selection, and he’s hoping to avoid being chosen. The soldiers...the “Guardians” they come and choose select young men to take away to fill their ranks...or so the story goes. But they never come back once they are chosen. He’s lived his entire life in a desert landscape. Following the rules, living his life with his family and dreaming of something...more.

He sees the suffering of the people around him. All of them struggling to simply survive under the harsh heat of the desert days and the brutal cold of the following nights. He wants more than the life his parents have lived. To escape the Selection, to dodge the Blending and to live his own life. But is that even possible?

When Harmen makes a dangerous decision after the loss of his friend, he brings down the ire of the Guardians upon not just himself, but his family as well. With this...tragedy will strike again, but it will be closer to home. All decisions have consequences and his are going to come back to haunt him in a real way.

He’s not alone though. In the shadows lurks another...a girl who has captured his attention. He sees her only once but her startling blue eyes captivate him and she’s all he thinks about. Will this girl reappear and how much will she affect his life? Turns out...their paths are meant to cross, and they will be the driving force for the other.

Sands of Ruin can be categorized as a young adult novel, that gives hints that it will later shift towards “new adult” with the continuation of the series. Harmen is 17 years old, and one of the main characters of this story. Author Muller is going to give readers dual POV with this story shifting from Harmen to Imani at random moments throughout this book. However, the lion’s share of the story will be focused on Harmen. He is the crucial character that author Muller wants readers to focus on.

Your heart is going to break for Harmen as he is made to go through so much throughout this story. Sands of Ruin becomes more than just a story of Harmen looking to find his family, but it becomes a quest to change the world. To bring about what once was. To fix what someone else’s pain and “rash” decision has changed the world into.

You see, the world wasn’t always a desert landscape as far as the eye can see. No, it used to be so much more. But due to someone else’s stupid decision, their evil choices, loss was created and thereby drove another to make a decision that has created nothing but more loss since. It will beg the question – Why? Why continue down this path when you see the unnecessary suffering of so many? The answer seems pretty simple doesn’t it? Greed. Love of power and the desire to cling to it no matter the cost.

Harmen, while he tries to be careful, he tends to find himself in the cross hairs of trouble more often than not. Every time he goes off by himself you’re pretty much guaranteed that something bad is about to happen. It’s literally like clockwork. Yep, cue groans of exasperation especially when you know that he’s a “wanted” man. LOL!

Well, the good news is that it at least makes for entertaining reading. You’ll constantly be on the edge of your seat wondering – “Is this going to be it?” “Is this going to be the moment, the scene where he’s messed up one too many times and is now in deep trouble?” You’re going to be crossing your fingers that it’s not, because then it will mean someone else has to put their neck on the line for him. Just resist the urge to give him a shake. Okay? LOL!

The good news? Other than Imani, here are a lot of characters in this story looking out for Harmen. So, even when he does get himself into deep trouble, there is usually someone there to lend him a helping hand. Ready for some secrets? Be sure to keep an eye out for them, because they are scattered everywhere throughout this story. Author Muller will drop hints here and there for readers, but it’s up to you to pick up on them.

There are sparks of romance throughout this story as well. Hoping for more? For readers hoping for more, you’ll be left disappointed on that front. At least for now. Who knows what future books will hold? However, readers who enjoy the build-up and establishment of a relationship are going to be appreciative of how the romance angle is only given so much attention throughout the story. It’s there, but it’s just subtle.

Hate cliffhangers? HA! Well, you’re going to have to brave through this one. Even we were howling “Oh come ON!!!” when we reached the end of this book. It’s a double whammy of a cliffhanger ending. You get some answers concerning particular characters, but the two main characters? You’re going to be left twisting in the wind as to what happens to them...for now.

Sands of Ruin is a novel that you’re not going to want to miss out on reading. So make sure that you go and grab a copy and dive on in!

Pros:

- Engaging storyline

- Interesting characters

- Dual POV

- Twists and secrets

- Light romance

Cons:

- None of merit

The Darkness All Around Us Review Spotlight

Resident Evil meets Zombie Land in this action-packed adventure by Megan Boley! Coming early this spring!

The author would also like to invite people to join her ARC team. All members will receive character art prints with their ARC! See author’s bio for link!

Looking for that new book that is going to have you coming back for more? Well, congratulations! You've just discovered that next book! Author Megan Boley has geared one up for you and that is especially true for fans of Resident Evil (waves hand) and Zombie Land! Okay, we've not seen Zombie Land...well, not all of it anyways, but when you say "Resident Evil" and MORE zombies? Yeah, we're on board. LOL!

The Darkness All Around Us starts off the story with our first FMC, Stella. Stella is holed up, safe...for now, but she's dealing with some issues in her current predicament. Death. No, she's not dying, but she has an "unwelcome friend" with her. Or does she? The truth of it won't come out until a surprise appearance by another character, but it definitely builds the suspense, and your eagerness to delve deeper into this book. So, it works! LOL!

The story will then shift to another FMC, Penny. Each of these characters is dealing with their own troubles in this world torn apart by chaos, destruction, and death. The interesting thing about Penny? She's looking for our girl, Stella. The big question? Why. The good news? We don't have to wait long for that answer! But prepare to have the fires of "the need to know more" to be lit! Because once they are...you're going to DE-VOUR this book! Let the fires rage!!

This book is a page-turner. It has a gripping storyline, packed with a nice cast of characters, tons of drama, and twists that you just won't see coming. Be forewarned for those expecting a "quick" read...this book is CHONKY!! We absolutely loved it! You're simply going to want to push the world aside, say "Leave me in peace to devour this book" and go. LOL! So, be prepared for that. Of course, you could just wait until the weekend, because then you'll have every reason to shut off the phone, leave the t.v. off, and pretend the world outside doesn't exist.

What's more though is that this is just the beginning!! Yes! That's right! Just the beginning! There's more to come and we're here for it all! We can't wait to find out what comes next, because this book was so good!

5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Megan Boley, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! We look forward to what comes next!

The Fate of Elysian Review Spotlight

Welcome to the tour for The Fate of Elysian by Theresa Sherron! Read on for more details!

The Fate of Elysian is the first book in Theresa Sherron's The Fate of the Empyrean series. Prepare to dive deep into a world that was once familiar, but no longer is. This dystopian fantasy novel is an eye-opening and engaging novel that will keep you coming back for more.

It's Faye's 18th birthday. The time has come for her to make her journey to the City. The place where she is meant to meet her "soul-mate" and lead a life similar to the one that her father and her mother lead. Will her life be full of as much love and happiness as theirs was? While it lasted? Before tragedy struck and left her mother a shell of who she used to be?

All life on Earth was nearly lost when famine and drought struck the world creating shortages and millions of lives lost due to starvation. A new world order arose. One that brought about a change that helped save life. But the life that awaits Faye...is it the one that she wants?

The Fate of Elysian starts off slow, but you just have to be patient as the author works to set the stage utilizing Faye. The author gives readers background on young Faye and the things that she has experienced up to this point. It's a mix of happiness and sadness at what the world has become and then to the point where it is shifting. Of course, her "journey" to the city is rather bizarre, but that's just the beginning.

As the story gains its footing, it gradually gains ground and becomes more engaging. Faye decides that the life that is "planned out" for her may not be the one that she wants anymore. Why shouldn't she get to choose her own path and who she wishes to be with? This, of course, always leads to trouble, but what fun would a book be without some drama mixed up in it?

This book gives you twists, secrets, and a few surprises here and there. By the time you reach the final page the author has artfully set the stage to leave readers eager for what comes next.

Savage Wild Hearts Review Spotlight

Savage Wild Hearts is the first book in Sean Fletcher’s Savage Wild series. A twisted fantasy novel packed with drama, and intensity that will keep you page-turning, and an ending that will leave you eager for the next book in the series.

Savage Wild Hearts starts things off with an eye-catching cover with a thicket of vines and thorns complete with a crown in the middle. What does it all mean? Well, this simple image is a teaser for what is to come buried deep in this story. Get comfortable, because this is a story that is going to keep you engaged in the characters to the very end.

Author Sean Fletcher has created a beautiful and dangerous new world where the old world is no more. An upheaval has rocked the world. Beings called “wildlings” have come along with the Wilds. The Wilds are a dangerous place filled with dangerous creatures that will tear you apart. The Wilds is no place for humans, and as you read this book you’ll come to understand all to well how true this is. However, one particular human seems to have found a place there.

Val was actually found not too far from the Wilds. She was warned even as a child to stay out, but the Wilds call to her. Plus, they are a source of her only financial stability...as meager as it is. She has a reason to put her life on the line. Someone she cares about is sick...and dying. But everything is about to change...when she crosses paths with a particular wildling.

It’s a gradual build-up, but this book is quick on its feet. Before you know it Val is being whisked away deeper into a situation that she had no intent of involving herself in. But she doesn’t really have a choice. It’s hard to have a choice when a threat hangs over your head. But she’s also desperate, and desperate people will do just about anything. Her new “associate” Rune can attest to that.

Rune has an agenda, and he sees something in Val that will help him accomplish what it is that he seeks. Rune is out for revenge, but he wants more than just that. His past haunts him, and he sees power in her that will help him get a step closer to seeing his enemies dead at his feet.

Savage Wild Hearts is a gripping story that will keep you coming back for more. Val is an interesting character with a past wrapped in shadows and mist. There is something different about her and it doesn’t take long for this fact to come to the forefront. Author Sean Fletcher is quick to tease readers with this tidbit of information early in the story. Yet, it’s really when Val is heading home that he makes sure to put a spotlight on her “abnormality.” Questions are going to begin to pepper your mind, but you’re going to be okay with waiting for the answers to come.

Val is a young woman who is more than a little jaded. As you read this book and get to know more about her, you’ll better understand exactly why. Of course, when she’s called upon to trust a wildling, it’s easy to understand why she’s less than eager to do so. Granted, it’s hard to trust someone when they “strong-arm” you into an agreement with threats. But the threats are tinged with promises, too. Heart gems. If she can get enough, she’ll be set. Money won’t be an issue and she can help the one she loves.

Of course, there is also Rune, the wildling. He has a goal...to be king. Sounds pretty ambitious, right? Well, it is. Dangerous, too. He’s an interesting character with a lofty goal, and a tough road ahead of him if he’s going to acquire his dream. You’re going to see that he’s more than willing to do whatever it takes to get there. He sounds tough as nails, but the author makes a point of showing that Rune is vulnerable as well. It’s a nice touch honestly.

This book brings readers a storyline that keeps you wondering “What is going to happen next?” Questions are going to dog you as the story goes deeper. Packed with twists and turns, nothing ever truly goes the way that you think it will go. The author does a fantastic job keeping readers on their toes as to what is going to happen next. Just when you think that things are going to go their way...BAM! Plot twist!

It’s honestly one of our favorite things about this book. You’re going to want things to go their way and for them to catch a break, but the twists are the best part. Do things pan out for them here and there? Yes, but it’s never in the way that you expect! Which makes it awesome!

Are you a reader who hates cliffhangers though? Well...this book may drive you the tiniest bit crazy then. LOL! The final chapters are absolutely CRAZY! No, seriously. Expect buggy eyes, jaw on the floor, and a tight grip on your device as you devour the final pages. The author throws a lot at you that you will. Not. See. Coming! One thing is for sure...you’re going to be eager for book two.

Love a good fantasy novel with a touch of dystopian elements? Then this is the book to grab and devour.

The Quelling Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour, The Quelling!

This fantasy novel is absolutely going to grip you & keep you coming back for more! Read on for my review and more details about this book.

The Quelling by C.L. Lauder is the beginning of a dynamic dystopian fantasy series that will grip you from the beginning and keep you coming back for more.

The cover for The Quelling quickly captures your interest with its splashy cover of eye-catching colors and three figures. Who are the figures? How are they connected? The answers are between the pages if you're ready to dive in.

The Quelling is a real page-turner of a novel. The minute you start reading this book the author drops you into a tense situation. The main character, Kyjta, is in hiding. She's not alone though. There are many others with her, and being quiet and staying safe is the name of the game. They are being hunted by monsters that if given the opportunity will take them away. Why? One simple fact...the marks that they bear on their bodies. But wait for it...because chaos is about to ensue.

Settle in as you read this book, because it will captivate you with the dynamic characters you'll be introduced to. Before you know it...BAM! You're halfway through and wondering where the time went. It's okay. This book is one we want to read, devour, and then creepily stare at the author for the next book. LOL! Okay, so maybe the "creepy stare" is just us. LOL!

Kyjta is a complex character. You're absolutely going to have questions about her and her past. Wait for it. These little gems of information are scattered throughout the story. You'll come across them at random times, and they will definitely give you "A-ha!" moments. It's a nice touch really because the questions drive you forward, but the answers...the answers will leave you dumbstruck. The laws of these people are WILD!

The Quelling blends dystopian with fantasy and a nice touch of science fiction elements as well. You get strange and bizarre creatures and the science-fiction angle from the characters and their technology. When I say the characters I mean Kranik and his people. They are such interesting characters and beings. They are more "pleasing" to look upon, in comparison to the others who live there with Kyjta and her people. But they are still feared.

The Quelling is an engaging and truly fascinating story. There is a lot going on, and you can even expect some jaw-dropping moments and situations. The title of this story ties in rather quickly, which is something that we especially love. The dynamics between the characters is well done and feels believable if they were real. This book is one that you're not going to want to miss out on.

For readers who enjoy fantasy novels with galactic mix-ins, this book is one that you're going to want to grab. We can't wait for what comes next!

Want to know more about the author? Check out some of these interview questions she took the time to answer!

Interview Questions:

1. Tell a little about yourself. What do you do when you're not writing? What are your aspirations for the future?

One of my character quirks is that I’m happiest when achieving two objectives simultaneously. For example, I love listening to audiobooks when exercising, watching TV in the bathtub, and reading while writing. This last one might seem tricky, and I’ll grant you it’s not exactly simultaneous, but I find it’s a great way to mood-set a scene and conquer writer’s block. Some people listen to music; I read other people’s stories. There’s something about being in the flow of a narrative that keeps my writing moving.

2. Give us some backstory behind The Quelling. Where and when did you write it?

My best days are when I have enough time to run up my neighbourhood mountain and sit at a small table overlooking the sea to write. Most of the Quelling was written during COVID; I would be up the mountain before six am and back at my desk before nine.

3. What was your favourite part of writing The Quelling?

The Quelling wasn’t supposed to be part of the series initially. I wrote what are now Book Two and Book Three first, thinking they’d be Books One and Two. I was daunted to find that I needed to go back in time to understand the circumstances of my premise. The best part about writing The Quelling was having it all fall neatly into place. It’s like the story was already formed, just waiting to be told.
