The Veiled Heir Review Spotlight

I can't think of a better novel to read than The Veiled Heir this summer, and we'll be celebrating the release all week!

The Veiled Heir is the first book in the Heir of Atlantis series, and this adult romantasy is an epic book to check out for the summer.

The Veiled Heir grabs your attention first and foremost with a gorgeous cover. Readers are treated to a gorgeous underwater scene with beautiful fish swirling around in the water with bubbles floating around them. As the title of the story takes center stage on the cover, tucked away under the letters is a crown and an intricate trident. Both are elements of the queendom that will be the focal point of this story of discovery, love and revelation.

The Veiled Heir is the first book in S.T. Fernandez’s An Heir of Atlantis series. Readers who enjoy fated mate stories, elemental fae, and a dynamic retelling of Atlantis are not going to want to miss out on this story. It is going to grip you and keep you page-turning to the end.

Asherah has lived her life as a human. It’s the life she’s known and what she believes what she is. She’s always known that something was different about herself, but could never really put her finger on it. However, things are about to change. A night out at the bar with friends is about to create a shift in her life that she’s in no way prepared for.

Things are clearly strange for Asherah when she’s walking home, and it appears that she’s about to be a victim of assault. A fateful phone call from her parents winds up being her saving grace, but it only delays the inevitable. Instead, it puts in motion a chain of events that will see Asherah lose her beloved mother, and thrust her into a world that she is no way prepared for.

The Veiled Heir is an engaging novel that follows Asherah as she learns the truth about who she really is and who her family truly is. It’s heartbreaking that she has to learn all of this on the heels of her mother’s death, but that’s just the way it’s gotta be for her. What author Fernandez shows readers is that Asherah’s mother had a specific plan in place, but Fate had other plans.

We understand why Asherah’s mother chose to raise her as a human, but it’s asking a bit much to say that there was never a time to begin to teach Asherah about her fae heritage. It would have been different if there had been active threats against her life throughout her childhood, but that doesn’t appear to be the case from how the storyline plays out. It’s only when Asherah is revealed as the heir that the threats to her life and person really begin to start raining down like hail.

The Veiled Heir is told from the first person POV and primarily focuses on Asherah, but there are chapters that throw the focus to Draevyn. Draevyn brings some depth to the story through his POV as he is the first to truly begin to acknowledge that there is something between him and Asherah. They both feel something when they see each other for the first time, but it’s him who is shown as “falling” first. It’s a thin line as to who truly “falls” first, because there is little resistance on her part, so it’s really about a tie. LOL!

The Veiled Heir has an engaging storyline, but it could have done with more push back on how often Asherah gets her way. Her constantly being allowed to have Draevyn as her guard when the issues begin to crop up...it takes away from the story. For us, it’s just too convenient that there isn’t more push-back on him being reassigned or there being more push-back on him being assigned as her guard in the first place. With the story sticking hard and fast to them getting their way in this there needed to be more of a push for answers especially from Draevyn to explain since he knew what he was feeling.

The “bad guy” in this book is just one of many, but oh boy are you going to enjoy despising this one character in particular. She’s got the world’s biggest ax to grind, and grind it she does. Things only intensify when she sees that she’s going to “lose” Draevyn to Asherah. Let us tell you, this woman is unhinged to the highest degree, but the good news? You’re going to learn exactly what her damage is, and it’s more than just a quest for power.

The Veiled Heir has multiple plot lines wrapped up in this book. You have the romance (and yes, there are many steamy scenes in this book) between Draevyn and Asherah. You have the chaos between Asherah and the jealous scorned former lover of Draevyn. You have the chaos brewing between the queendoms but especially concerning a specific one who believes that humans are meant to serve the fae as a new ice age is threatening the world.

Yes, this book is throwing everything at you and the kitchen sink with a prophecy that is waiting to be fulfilled. Hey, it all works together to create quite a dynamic storyline. There is some side story that could have been left out, but author Fernandez is looking to create the dynamic that Asherah is looking to be a different type of queen in comparison to those who came before her.

The Veiled Heir chalks itself up to be a great summer read for those looking for their next summer novel. One thing is for sure when you reach the end of this book? You’re going to be eye-balling the author with this one question – “When is book two going to be ready?” We need answers, so join the club! LOL! Hate cliffhangers? Well, this one really isn’t that bad, but it will leave you twisting in the wind. LOL!

The Veiled Heir is a gripping romantasy and an overall great start to this series. We can’t wait to find out what happens next. If you love ocean stories, discovered heirs, stories of Atlantis, and “mermaid” style characters then this is the book and series for you to check out.

A Pursuit of Madness Review Spotlight

A Pursuit of Madness is a standalone fantasy novel that takes Alice in Wonderland and gives it a brand new twist. This isn’t the Alice you remember, so brace yourself for a darker more twisted version that will keep you page-turning.

A Pursuit ofMadness’s cover cues you in on the darkness within its pages with a beautifully dark cover with elegant silver framing that is delicate, but draws the eye. In the center of this book’s cover is a keyhole with roses adorning either side of it. Below that is a beautiful crown with a silver pocket watch sitting in the very center of the crown. The cover doesn’t necessarily scream “Wonderland” but it will pique your interest in what the cover hides inside.

A Pursuit of Madness is the first book in author Amber Bunch’s A Twisted Princess Collection. As stated above, this book is a standalone novel with a nice steamy HEA at the end. Technically Alice isn’t a princess, but don’t think that that means that there aren’t any princesses in this book. There is, but you just need to wait a minute before she makes an appearance.

A Pursuit of Madness gives readers a multiple POV throughout this book. You can expect not two, not three, and definitely not four POV with this book. Nope! You get five! Yes! We’re getting spoiled with the POV in this novel. It will for sure keep you on your toes as the author takes you back and forth between the world we are familiar with, and Wonderland.

There is something interesting in how author Bunch depicts Wonderland. Wonderland mimics a lot of what is already familiar to us. They have cars, their own version of the internet, and other technological advances. What they don’t have though...is freedom. Their Queen keeps them shackled in fear. Magic is outlawed. Outrageous, right?! I mean, seriously! Come on! Is it because the Queen fears someone using magic to usurp her? (Which she totally deserves to happen.) Or is it simply so that she can keep the citizens in fear of her assassins and Jabberwocky?

One thing is for sure when it comes to A Pursuit of Madness you are getting two dynamic factors with this novel – 1) dark (which we absolutely loved) and 2)...steamy. Lots of steamy.

One of the things that we absolutely loved about this book is the level of darkness in Alice’s chapters. She’s a very dark character, but she does certain “dark” things...for good. So, she’s a dark character with the intent and plan to make the world...a better place. So, basically, you gotta love her...or she’ll kill you. LOL! Just kidding!! No, seriously, we promise….we’re kidding. LOL!

Think that Alice is the only dark character in this book? Of course, she’s not! We have the twins – Dom and Dean in Wonderland, though Hatter has some darkness in him, too. But of course, we have the assassin pair, too. Now, they are the ones that you don’t want to cross. The Queen’s assassins who do her bidding of hunting down those who are found doing magic. Merciless killers who more than enjoy what they do. You get to witness one of their hunts, but the hunt plays out quickly. We would have liked a touch more detail since they are so feared. You’d think that they’d play with their “food” more than they do. The good news is that you get some of that detail with Alice when she goes on her own “hunt.”

A Pursuit of Madness really brings the drama and the steamy. You get multiple scenes sprinkled through that will keep you entertained and coming back for more. It is a lot of no-holds-barred steamy that at times will dance the fine line of consent. But let’s be clear...consent is always given, so don’t think that anything is done against anyone’s will. Well, except for Princess Rose when she is made to use her tracking magic on the citizens of her kingdom.

A Pursuit of Madness is part of the Twisted Princess Collection. Yet, the story doesn’t give readers a lot of the princess in this story. It’s an expectation that fails to be met. Which is disappointing. You can call Alice “princess” if you want to, but it’s not truly applicable, because she’s not a princess. It would simply be just giving Alice a nickname and nothing more. We really wanted more of Rose with this story, despite the fact that this is an “Alice in Wonderland” style novel.

A Pursuit of Madness has a lot of drama, but what you also get is a lot of...things going the way for the characters. Are there some “hiccups” that force them to reassess and rethink certain situations? Yes. Could there have been more of them? Again...yes. This book honestly needed more of them. We just wanted more drama and for the characters to really have to fight to reclaim what it is that they are after.

Hoping for an epic battle that sees the Queen taken down? Perhaps an epic fight with the assassins that sees their reign of terror ended? This is a potential spoiler, so...read on at your own risk. This story is lacking in an epic fight between the primary character(s) that have been deemed the bad guy(s). It’s honestly disappointing. Th expectation is there for this big fight to come. Granted, the Queen is not depicted as a fighter, so...then that shifts the expectation to the assassins. It’s a disappointment that none of this pans out after all the hype that the characters do of shouting about “taking down the queen and restoring Wonderland.”

A Pursuit of Madness reads like a standalone novel, and so you can expect a full storyline and a HEA ending with a nice little time gap at the end. When we say “time gap” we mean that you get a little passage of time before the author revisits the characters again and shows where they are now. Get ready for one of the most deliciously steamy moments in the book. Saving the best for last. LOL!

A Pursuit of Madness is a dynamic twist on a classic story, and one thing is for sure and that is author Bunch does this story proud. Alice is a character who draws you in, but she works well together with the other characters to create a fun story that will appeal to your dark side and leave you begging for more with the steamy.

Pros:

  • Engaging story
  • Deliciously dark elements
  • Steamy scenes
  • Twisted characters

Cons:

  • No epic fight between the main bad guys of the story
  • Wanted more drama

Dragon Blood Review Spotlight

To celebrate the upcoming release of Dragon King, we're going back to the start. If you haven't read Dragon Blood yet, we really think you should!

Dragon Blood is the start of Jane Apatova’s Insatiable Desires series. Yes, we know it says “book two” which, technically it is, but this book is the real jump-off point. So, fellow readers, haven’t read book one? It’s okay. This the beginning while book one is the prequel. But if you wish to read from the beginning beginning...please feel free to do so. We’re sure you’ll enjoy getting the full immersive picture.

Dragon Blood reaches out to readers with a green dragon scale background with a sword situated in the middle of the cover. Doesn’t look like much does it? But is it enough to grab your attention and pique your interest in discovering the story tucked away inside? Well, that will be up to you, dear reader. For most, it might not be due to it’s non-flashy cover, but you know what they say...”Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.”

Dragon Blood is no exception to the rule. While the cover may be unassuming, it hides a rather intriguing novel. Author Apatova promises readers a story with dragons, slow-burn romance, secrets, a brewing war, magic, and so much more. What we also get is age-gap romance. Most tend to think...early to mid twenties for the FMC and maybe late 30s to mid-40s to early 50s. Well...let’s just get this out of the way...the girls? They’re barely of age...17 about to turn 18 and the other is 18. And yes, they’re virgins, too. This won’t be everyone’s favorite tropes to delve into, but if you can move past that...you’ll find a rather intriguing novel.

The first part of the story is rather uneventful. Author Apatova introduces readers to Prince Alister and High King Gareth. Two individuals of dragon blood, they are seeking a better and brighter future for their people. But first thing, author Apatova does is introduce readers to a story surrounding the creation of this unique world. It’s a fascinating story being revisited with a small boy who will one day be king. You get an introduction to the dragons that helped create this unique world.

As the story shifts forward you are put into the characters present day. The story shifts frequently between High King Gareth and his brother Alister. Alister is smitten with a young woman that he met over a year ago. He’s keeping this a secret, for the time being, from Gareth. You’ll understand the reasoning behind, because honestly, there is a particular way that things are done with these kingdoms.

Alister, for some, will probably come off as the more likeable of the two brothers. LOL! Though, just prepare for him to be the possessive one of the two. He’s found the one who calls to him, and she is all that he wants. Regardless of how much teasing Gareth may decide to lavish upon him. Gareth on the other hand, appears to be the exact opposite. Gareth was married for a time, but his wife...is no longer of this world. He has mourned, but he also holds some resentment towards the events that led up to it all. So, for the time being, Gareth is a bit of a...womanizer.

As we stated above, Dragon Blood has a rather slow and uneventful beginning. We eventually get to meet two young ladies who are going to be pivotal to the two men of the story. You’re going to be looking for signs of trouble to crop up though. While there isn’t any “relationship” or romance drama that threatens a potential romantic rival you get to watch the dynamics unfold between the characters.

Once the story hits...around the 30% point...that’s when things start to get interesting. The drama really begins to amp up when a situation arises with the girl that Alister has found love with. It would seem that there is someone in the kingdom who is unhappy with how things are. Who knew? LOL!

Cue the dragons!! Okay, okay, there are wyverns, smaller dragons, too. We quite literally squealed with excitement at the interactions with the wyverns. They just sound so adorable and cute. Cue wanting to cuddle one. LOL! But the dragons finally make an appearance and it is some epic excitement when they do. They come in gorgeous colors, are vicious fighters, and are just truly amazing.

The romance is slow-burn. Alister is fanning the flames of his, but Gareth...well, Gareth is trying to smother his. They both have fated mates, but while Alister is keen on embracing his Gareth is bent on not embracing his. As you read about his reasoning, it’s a mixed bag of making sense. You’ll understand it on the one hand, and then view him as a fool on the other. But hey, he’s a “playboy”...always has been, and it’s going to take an exceptional woman to change that. Challenge...accepted, says Fate. LOL!

Dragon Blood has a lot going for it, and once the story grips you, it’s going to keep you coming back for more. Hate cliffhangers? Well, that’s just too bad, because it’s going to have one. Is it a major cliffhanger that’s going to leave you raging? Eh, not really, but it will leave you...along with a couple other characters...with lots of questions and eager for answers.

One thing is for sure...we can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book.

Pros:

  • Steamy scenes
  • Slow-burn romance
  • Engaging storyline
  • Drama
  • Dragons

Cons:

  • Slow start that borders on a touch tedious, at times, to get through.

A House of Fangs and Deceit Review Spotlight

We are so EXCITED to share A House of Fangs and Deceit with you this week! Everything about it is just... *Chef's Kiss

Eager for a new dark fantasy novel with "why choose" vibes? Okay, okay, it's more than just vibes. It's there in black and white, giving you steamy deliciousness that - depending on where you live - is going to have you reaching for a cool down. LOL!

A House of Fangs and Deceit is the first book in the Lunaria Realms series, and trust us on this one, you won't want to miss out on this book! From the beginning, the author hooks you in with the prologue. This part of the story alone is so gripping and riveting that you'll be instantly glued to the pages.

A House of Fangs and Deceit moves forward from the prologue and keeps you thoroughly engaged in the story as the author shifts their attention to one of the main characters - Samara. Life is not going well with her at her new home and it's been three years. Three years people!

Sex life? Blah. Husband? Double blah. Okay, okay, so according to Samara he's not bad to look at, and he's got something going on downstairs but when it comes to her? He performs his "duties" but that's it. Excuse me, but what?! And his mother is even worse! Apparently Mother isn't letting go of any crumb of power unless you intend to pry it from her cold dead fingers, because he sure as hell ain't gonna do it.

Nope! "Husband" Demetri apparently would prefer to spend time with his "friends." Yeah, "friends" with benefits. Don't worry though, it gets better. Samara works so hard and proving herself, that when certain scenes play out you're going to wish that you could jump through the pages and dole out righteous justice on her behalf. Unfortunately, we can't, so we'll just have to make do with screaming our rage out to the world. LOL!

When Samara makes the decision to return home, things get really interesting. Crushes are reignited and new romance blooms. Things are going to get spicy steamy and fast! But the danger is there as well. The threat of the wraiths are creeping ever closer. Something strange is going on at Samara's old home, and the tables are about to turn in the most twisted way!

Think you're going to be putting this book down? Ha! Guess again! Before you know it you'll be halfway through this book, and will only pause to do the following - get a breath of air, or to quickly scurry to refresh your COLD drink or to help you take the edge off. LOL! This book is seriously delicious.

When you get to the end of this book, and by end we mean the final two pages...you are going to be screaming!! LOL! Simply because of the twist the author throws at us readers and leaves us practically on our knees begging for more and for October to hurry up and get here. Did someone say October? Is it here yet?! OMG! We need answers! LOL!

This is an epic book and a great start to the series. We can't wait to find out what happens next.

From the ashes, the Moroi Houses rose.

As the Heir to one of the most influential Houses, I’ve always known that an arranged marriage would be part of my future. One where I ruled alongside my husband as we fought to strengthen the crumbling alliances of our people.

Kieran is even more gorgeous and clever-tongued than I remember, while Alaric is frustrating... and hotter than he has any right to be. About the Author

Alex Frost is… actually Maddox Grey. Dun dun duuuuun!

Okay probably not that dramatic of a reveal since it isn’t exactly a closely guarded secret. The pen name Alex Frost was created to publish the spicier fantasy series that fall under the “Why Choose” genre.

Why Alex Frost? Because Maddox is a freaking nerd. After being trained by local baristas to respond to the name “Alex” instead of Maddox, it seemed like the perfect pen name. Half of it anyway.

Since Maddox already shares their last name with Jean Grey of the X-Men, it seemed fitting to borrow Emma Frost’s last name for their other persona.

If you know, you know. (insert smirking face)

More Than Our Fake Vows Review Spotlight

We’re celebrating the release of Katie Richard’s latest romance, More than Our Fake Vows! Read on for more details and visit one of our Bookstagram hosts for a chance to win a book box!

More Than Our Fake Vows is a standalone second chance romance novel by Katie Richard. Get ready for heart-stopping romance, the anxiety of the things that will threaten their blooming love, and a slow-burn that will have you begging for more!

More Than Our Fake Vows is the first book that I have read by this author. Normally, I dodge contemporary romance novels, but this one was worth reading!

Teagan is looking for a place to just disappear for a minute and get his thoughts together. His ex is proving to be a real opportunistic gold-digger, and that’s putting his band’s future in jeopardy. Natalie is a successful interior designer running from her own heartbreaking past, but the silence of down time is just too much. So she keeps herself busy by also working at a bar. She’s a real firecracker, and when a patron gets handsy, Teagan impresses her when he does more than just sit and stare during the altercation.

Things get interesting though as a friendship (more like crush LOL) begins to bloom between the two when Natalie begins working on Teagan’s new house. Both are keeping their secrets pretty close to the chest, but is that what is best? Because as we all know secrets always lead to trouble when they come to light.

The drama builds gradually between Natalie and Teagan. There will be situations and moments of where they both are going to drive you absolutely crazy. LOL! Missed opportunities, lack of communication, etc. It’ll be enough to where you just want to shake them both. Yes, I know, we must refrain for multiple reasons. LOL!

Teagan keeps his secrets mainly based on who he is and what exactly it is that he does. Natalie has given him enough information to know that she’s not that big a fan of his particular kind of music. Her last relationship really left her traumatized. When you learn exactly what went down you’ll understand. Just be willing to be patient on learning the facts. It’s going to take more than a minute. It’s just disappointing that Natalie isn’t the one to really lay it all out there for Teagan herself.

Natalie herself comes off more as keeping her secrets close to the chest so that she can continue to cling to the past and the damage that it did to her. She’s a strong female character, but this tarnishes that. Also, she hints that she’s endured similar behavior in past relationships, but we never get a clear understanding as to what really happened. I feel like this is a missed opportunity for the author. When you say that there is a string of bad/broken relationships in her past, that needs some explanation. Were they all the same? Were they all this traumatizing? Natalie seems to just want to wallow in the pain of what almost was. I wanted more for her.

The back and forth between the characters really drives the story forward. I like that Harper isn’t some “shadow” character of where you wonder when/is she going to show up? She makes appearances and does her job at stirring the pot. In more ways than one, too. But I especially like that the author utilizes Teagan’s career as well when it comes to the public eye. The vulturous media isn’t going to let them have their “fake fantasy” without inserting themselves and insinuating whatever salacious drivvle that they can.

The romantic moments in this book are absolutely swoon-worthy. The torment that readers are going to go through reading this book is huge! LOL! The slow-burn is top tier. There will be moments of where you’ll wonder if they are EVER going to cross that line. LOL! There will be some teasing as temptation rises, but man...Teagan has the strength that is to be admired!

Hoping for an HEA? Well, no need to worry, because that is pretty much guaranteed. But it won’t be an easy one, because where would the fun be in that? LOL! Of course, there will also be a surprise element that the author throws at readers. Prepare for a jaw-drop. But it’s also a promise for another fascinating story to come, so that’s something to look forward to.

For readers who enjoy contemporary romance novels with a healthy dose of drama, romance, and slow-burn elements then this is the book for you. You’re not going to want to miss out on Teagan and Natalie’s story. A delicious romance that will have you swooning for their romance (the good more so than the bad) to be your own. I know I do. LOL!

Scars of Seduction and Sacrifice Review Spotlight

Birth made her a slave. Love made her a martyr. He’ll make her his queen.

Scars of Seduction and Sacrifice is the second book in the Dark Eden series. If you have yet to dive into this series, you're missing out. Book two, to an extent, can be read as a "stand-alone" if you haven't read book one, but I recommend that you make time to go back and dive in from the beginning. I say this because characters from book one surface in book two, but not immediately. But keep this in mind, this is a series, the books are all connected, and there's going to be a third book. So...just go ahead and read them in order. LOL!

Scars of Seduction focuses on Vaza and Brex, a zealot, intent on sacrificing her sister to a dead god to bring an end to the death and destruction plaguing their people. Vaza will do whatever it takes to protect her sister, and if it means taking on this zealot...then so be it.

Brace yourself for some epic drama, because this book is going to be gooooooooddd!!

This book starts out with Zava playing the role of a "rogue." She's a queen, and creates a pheromone that sends the males into a mating frenzy. It's restricted for a reason. The water is infected with red tide that once it gets into their lungs...it kills. There is no help or hope beyond that point. So she has to be very careful when she goes on her excursions. But when she crosses paths with Brex, well, things just got a little bit complicated. But there is more going on than even she fully knows.

The relationships between Zava and her two sisters is truly interesting. Her twin sister is a queen like herself, but her other sister pushed herself to become high priestess. One would think that this means she'd have her sisters' best interests at heart...yeah...no. No, Zwara has her own interests and she harbors some resentment towards Zava especially.

Of course, this book isn't solely about Zava and her zealot "friends." LOL! No, we get characters from book one, as well. Renae and Liam (from book one) are continuing their story, and it is a strange one (especially if you haven't read book one). Liam is trapped on an island (not of this earth) and Renae has joined him. He's given up hope of finding a way out/off, but she's determined to get out. But what will be the price? Something is keeping them there, and it won't let go easily.

The author goes back and forth between the various characters giving readers pieces of what is going on with them. Wondering what the connection is? Well, let me tell you...it's coming and it just might blow your mind in the process.

The ending isn't one that you're necessarily going to like, but trust me...it's going to have you wondering what is going to happen next. I know that you'll be eager for book three just like me.

Birth made her a slave. Love made her a martyr. He’ll make her his queen.

Welcome to Eden. Born without magic into a brutal world where mage abilities determine survival, Vaza didn’t think her life as a breeder-queen could get any worse.

Not until a cult leader declares her identical twin must be sacrificed to resurrect a dead god. Vaza plans to destroy the prophet’s credibility by seducing him into breaking his sacred vows. To get close enough to ruin him, however, she’ll need to infiltrate The Order and do the one thing she fears most-open her heart and allow Brex to claim more than just her pleasure.

Meanwhile, in the prison world of the dead…

All his life, Liam Riley has been told he’s an abomination. Turns out it’s true. He never asked to be cursed with the powers of a living god, but now that he has them, he’ll use every one of his new gifts to protect his soul-bonded mate. Even if it means locking her up to keep her from discovering the truth about the entity holding them hostage.

Too bad Renae has no intention of being kept in a cage. Not when she sacrificed everything to save him. The version of Liam she finds in the Void isn’t the same man she fell in love with. A decade of solitary confinement in the Void has turned him into something more. Something inhuman.

Book two in the Dark Eden sci-fantasy series, where the lines between enemies, allies, loyalty, and love blur beyond recognition.

Told in two colliding and scorchingly hot timelines that will leave readers questioning who the real monsters are.
