Of Song and Darkness Review Spotlight

Of Song and Darkness is now available and we're thrilled to share it with you all this week!

Of Song and Darkness is a standalone fantasy romance novel with plenty of Little Mermaid vibes, for readers who thoroughly enjoyed that movie/story. Just remember, this is not your typical “Little Mermaid” story. Of Song and Darkness is something fresh and new.

The god of the sea, Poseidon, is gone. Dead. Fallen from this world. What happened to him? Well, that is a question that will be something trails readers as they dive into this story. But with Poseidon gone, so is his protection. While he lived, Poseidon kept the Dark Water at bay. But with him gone, the Dark Water is plaguing the oceans and destroying everything that it comes across.

Many have said, “The Dark Water is a myth.” But Princess Rhea is determined to find out the truth, and truth she will find. Dark Water? It’s real, and little by little it is destroying everything in the ocean. There is only one way to destroy it, and this is not going to be an easy undertaking for Rhea. She must go and find Medusa...and destroy her.

Of Song and Darkness reads with a lot of elements taken from the Little Mermaid story with some pieces thrown in from a familiar cartoon from my childhood called, Pirates of Dark Water. Loved that show. Princess Rhea, like so many royals we read about, is being pushed into a bubble.

What bubble is that? Well, she’s told to “stay safe,” “Don’t wander off,” “Meet your new fiancee that you really have no say in wanting.” Cue that this guy was previously engaged to her now deceased sister, and yuck.

Okay, so he’s not ugly on the outside, but he’s giving ugly vibes on the inside. You’re going to get the sense that he’s truly angling for a shot at the throne, and that at the end of the day? Rhea is just a means to an end.

Rhea isn’t about to let her life be dictated to her, and so she goes on the hunt for answers. She’s quick to find them, which is good, because it speeds the storyline along. Also, it’s not like time is on her side. With each passing day the Dark Water creeps closer to where she and her family live. Her quest for answers takes her to...can you guess? Yep! A sea witch with her own goals and ambitions.

Is this sea witch setting Rhea up for failure? The odds aren’t exactly in Rhea’s favor. It seems like a simple enough thing to do as the witch demands, but things are rarely, if ever...THAT simple. Prepare to be pulled deeper into the depths of this story with each turn of the page.

Of Song and Darkness is a slow-burn romance fantasy novel. It definitely is giving and measuring up to the “enemies to lovers” trope. Kai is a monster hunter. He’s suffered loss and his zealous engagement in the hunting of the creatures of the seas hints that his loss is connected to one of them. Does that mean that all should pay for the crimes of one? Most would say no. Kai? Would say he doesn’t care as long as it’s a job that pays.

Rhea is an interesting character. She has some really nice engaging elements about her. She’s a siren, a princess, and she’s determined to protect her people. She doesn’t care what she has to do, but she’ll do what she must. Even if means partnering with Kai.

The romance sparks slowly between these two characters. It starts out with long looks, small amounts of admiration mixed together with irritation. Let’s be honest...that’s typically how it goes. LOL! Rhea showcases her bravery quite often in this story. Kai can’t decide whether to praise her or lose his mind.

Of Song and Darkness promises a HEA and absolutely delivers in that respect. This reader would have liked more drama and a couple more epic scenes with lots of intense moments, but all in all this is a story worth reading. Especially if you love retellings of some of your favorite classics.

4.5 out of 5 stars

The Legend of Gasparilla Spotlight

Bridgerton meets Pirates of the Caribbean

Welcome to the tour for The Legend of Gasparilla by S.T. Fernandez, a gorgeous historical fantasy full or romance and pirates!

The Legend of Gasparilla: A Historical Pirate Romance

Publication Date: November 7, 2023

Genre: Historical Fantasy Romance/ Pirates

Bridgerton meets Pirates of the Caribbean in a story many argue is not a myth but a legend.

Admiral José Gaspar of the Spanish Royal Navy had it all: the love of his life, Joséfa de Mayorga; the confidence of the King; and a plan to become one of the most successful merchants in all of Spain. But when a jilted former lover accuses him of stealing the crown jewels, he escapes Sevilla only to realize he’s duped into piracy, further staining his legacy. Gaspar continues down an immoral path he works relentlessly to resist. The dream life he yearned for with Joséfa slowly slips away, his reputation far too ruined to be worthy of her honor.

After having her beloved ripped from her life, Joséfa and Gaspar’s friends work tirelessly to clear his name to no avail. When fate finally hands her a chance, she sets sail to find José, but fate is both friend and foe. Joséfa discovers the man she lost is different from the viscous pirate she rescues from certain death.

When infamous pirate hunter Lieutenant Kearny of the USS Enterprise sets his sights on the new pirate, Gaspar must decide between a dark and perilous addiction to piracy or living a subdued life in the shadows. His darker inhibitions may take his soul hostage, and Joséfa’s love may not be enough to save him.

On Bladed Tides Review Spotlight

We’re in our pirate era and loving it! Check out On Bladed Tides and grab yourself a copy of this beauty today!

On Bladed Tides is the first book in Rachel C. Donnan's On Bladed Tides series, and if you love a good fantasy novel steeped in pirates, drama, danger, and a TON of danger...then this is the book that you need to grab right now.

On Bladed Tides is going to introduce you to an array of characters, but only two are truly going to be the primary focus of the storyline. You're going to meet Rhea first. Former assassin, now captain of the Queen's Guard. It's not a post she took on willingly. It was one she was forced into. Trust us on this one...the queen is MAD! But she's not the only one in this situation. I don't even think that you can say her saving Rhea's life was an act of kindness. The queen saw something in her that she wanted...so she took it...by way of sparing Rhea's life...for now.

But...where are the pirates? Well, they are front and center at the beginning of this book. Not in a good way either. You're going to get a little bit of "Pirates, Band of Misfits" when it comes to these royals. Instead of it just being the queen who hates pirates...it's both of them. They have their "reasons" but they just aren't jiving with me. LOL! These two royals are bad news of the epically worst kind. But the queen has a method to her madness.

After the death of her daughter, her sanity has fractured further. Now, all she wants is her errant son returned to her. The only one who knows where he is...Kaiden, pirate captain, current prisoner of the crown. Rhea knows him. They have history, but their history is marred by an event in their past...an event that Kaiden has some serious explaining to do.

But an opportunity strikes...the queen makes them an offer that they can't refuse. No, seriously. There is no "no thanks, I think I'll pass on this one" option. It's do this and I'll give you this in return, or refuse and I kill you now. Okay, then ma'am! Off we go shall we! LOL! The task? Find and bring back her son...alive. The prize? Their freedom. This is not going to go smoothly. LOL!

This book is seriously good. Rhea is a strong FMC and I love her. She's flawed, but her issues are not of her own making. This is all Kaiden's fault. What exactly did he do? Well, you're going to have to wait to find out that answer, but it's worth getting to that point.

Wondering if there is any steamy situations on this voyage of danger and thrills? Well, yes, yes there is. LOL! There aren't a lot, but that's completely fine for this reader. I appreciate that the focus of the story stays on the journey that Kaiden and Rhea are on. Plus, the drama that is playing out between the two of them with their tainted history.

This book will end on a cliffhanger. The author treats readers to an epilogue that gives us some idea as to what is going on with Kaiden, but buckle up because it's going to leave you eager for more. So...when is book two coming out again? LOL! Sorry, you're going to be wondering the same thing, too.

This book is a rip-roaring good ride. It's a page-turner, gripping, and has some jaw-dropping moments that are literally going to have you yelling "What?!" It's awesome. Readers who enjoy fantasy novels, with pirates, assassins, magic, other realms and lots of danger...grab this book. It's perfect for you.

5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Rachel C. Donnan, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book. I look forward to what comes next!

Rhea should have died two years ago.

She was ready to swing by the neck till the God of Death came to take her. Yet, her saviour was not the man who promised to come back for her, but rather a tyrant queen. Rhea, forced to swap one noose of rope for a different kind of leash, must stand beside the one woman who both saved her and it set on destroying her.
That is until the queen’s son goes missing, lost at sea and last seen in the hands of the infamous pirate Kaiden Blackblood – the very same man who promised to come back for Rhea two years ago.
When Kaiden and his crew are found washed up and without the prince, the queen issues one order.

Find her son and be offered freedom as a reward.
Rhea must set aside her hatred for the one man she was foolish enough to fall in love with, and sail alongside him to find the missing prince – even if it means sailing into different realms that should only exist in nightmares.

The Audient and the Phantom Night Review Spotlight

We’re celebrating the release of The Audient and the Phantom Night this week! Read on for more details!

The Audient and the Phantom Night is the beginning of Sadie Hewitt's The Aeglecian series. Love pirates? Love curses? Love a good fantasy novel that will sweep you away into the depths of the sea? Then this is the book that you're not going to want to miss out! This book is a page-turner, and absolutely delicious.

The Audient and the Phantom Night begins with a sinking ship. The crew is doomed, but the captain makes the decision to refuse to roll the dice and see where it will lead them. You are introduced to Devlin aka the Spectre in this first chapter. He's looking to collect souls, but this time around...he fails. But it won't always be that way.

When I read that first chapter with Devlin trying to "recruit" some new members of his crew I immediately got "Ghost Ship" vibes. I got really excited. LOL! Of course, this book isn't nearly as nefarious as that movie, but that was the initial vibe that I got. I get it again later on in the story during a particular scene that plays out, but this book is dynamically different so rest easy in that. LOL!

The book alternates between Fenna and Devlin in the POV. The story focuses heavily on Fenna in the beginning and I enjoyed learning about her and her brother. When he joins the navy and leaves her behind I felt bad for her. You absolutely see how the people in the village treat her. Of course, she has a unique gift, but only she, her brother, and her friend are aware of her gift. Wonder what her gift is? Well, you'll have to read to find out. Because it is one that she is warned against using. Granted she does use it a few times in the beginning, but then it takes a back seat for awhile. Honestly, I actually forgot for awhile. LOL! Anyways!

When Fenna's brother shows up on the run and the town comes under attack, she does what her heart tells her...she tries to help the ungrateful wretches who are the townsfolk. What ends up happening? Well, she crosses paths with Devlin. When he demands Dasos she offers herself up in his place. His debt? 25 years. Yikes! But that's love for you! Why did he run? Well, bro saw something he can never unsee. It had my jaw dropping so...I can understand. LOL!

This book has some darkly delicious moments. The Audient and the Phantom Night is engaging and truly gripping. This book leads a dance between Fenna and Devlin with a lot of back and forth. Fenna is finding her place among the crew, but she's learning that not everyone is safe. Of course, this sets into motion a secondary drama that will unfold later on in the story. This book will pull you to the edge of your seat with each turn of the page.

The steamy building between Fenna and Devlin is going to demand a fan or in some cases...you just simply opening the door and standing in it to cool yourself off. LOL! This book is slow-burn so settle in. The temptation is going to burn the words off the pages. Fenna is intrigued by Devlin, but she has no intentions of being used or exploited by him and tossed aside. (She's had some bad experiences back home.) But he has no intention of doing anything of that sort to her. The question of when "will they" will border line have you raging...in a good way! LOL!

Grab your copy of this book! Remember, this is just the beginning and this author will absolutely leave you begging for more. I know that I can't wait for what comes next!

5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Sadie Hewitt, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to what comes next!

Devlin Cato is the captain of a cursed ship and can step foot on land for one day every seven years. Once again, he’s found himself using it to chase a deserter across the continent. His hunt is short-lived when Fenna agrees to take on her brother’s twenty-five-year debt in exchange for leaving her smoldering city to heal.

As Fenna spends more time aboard The Phantom Night with the ship’s mysterious and seductive captain, she soon finds herself caught between loyalty to her brother and her fiery passion for Devlin Cato. Secrets of Jane Review Spotlight

Seriously, how gorgeous is this book?! Have you read The Secrets of Jane yet? We highly suggest you do! Read on for more details, and visit one of Bookstagram hosts to win 1 of 2 book boxes.

Secrets of Jane is the first book in Charlotte Mallory's The Improper Bastards series and this book took me by complete surprise. So, brace yourself! This book is going to sweep you away from page one and keep you page-turning to the end! Sound like your kind of book? Then dive in and enjoy!

Secrets of Jane is the first book in Mallory's The Improper Bastards duet and this book is insanely good. Of course, the first thing that is going to grab your attention is that gorgeous cover. Readers who like to be drawn in with a tasty piece of eye-candy cover will definitely be drawn to this book. You won't be able to look away. Next thing you know your eyes will be moving towards the blurb and then it's game over. Just go ahead, click "buy" and settle in for a delicious story. LOL!

From the beginning, Secrets of Jane is gripping and it's just Jane leaving a pub with her best friend! LOL! How the heck does that work?! Well, good story-telling, let me tell ya. LOL! Of course, the story starts off "innocently" enough, but then it shifts into darker territory, and it all starts with the smell of smoke.

Shortly after that? Enter the mercenary!!! Soren brings a sense of danger and power to the story immediately. You get the sense that he's not someone to be trifled with. I love it. LOL! Of course, unless you're like one particular idiot who still is sulking because Jane "read him the riot act." LOL! He deserved it. Well, back to Soren...he's something else! He comes off as dangerous and he knows it. But he's here on the hunt...for Jane. Looks like she has caught the attention of some people and now she has to answer for it. She probably should have toned down the fighting...too late for that now!

This book is crazy good! You're going to be in for a lot of chaos, drama, and some deliciously steamy scenes. Could it be a little hotter? Heck yes! I'll never turn down to pages that burn with steam, but it's still really good.

The author weaves together a great storyline and epic world with this book. You get magic, pirates, drama, steamy, secrets and more! I rode the fence a little concerning some of the morally grey aspects of this book, but it honestly works so I can't complain. LOL! Too much. LOL!

This book does end on a cliffhanger. Just fair warning for those who don't read all the way to the end of an author's warning. There is A CLIFFHANGER!!! Be prepared for it! It is going to happen! Don't get the book and then complain about the cliffhanger. Don't do it! Seriously. Don't.

For readers who enjoy a good cliffhanger...you're going to devour this book and then howl for more...in a good way. LOL! This book is entertaining from beginning to end and will have you looking forward to the second half of this duet.

Definitely recommend this story.

I’m a disciplined man, Jane. I can stay here for as long as you need before the lesson sinks in that you don’t run from me while in my charge.” — Soren.

He’s a Mercenary with powers that allow him feel the hearts/desires/fears of others.
She’s his target, and must guard her identity at all costs.

My village is aflame, and a deadly legend becomes my captor.

I’m to appear before the most elite faction of mercenaries and warlords, commanded to answer for a crime they refuse to explain. Even if my only guess for why they want me is wrong, they cannot have me. I’ve sworn to never return to Skull’s Row, home to thieves and killers; the graveyard of my childhood.

He plans to unbury every memory until my soul is stripped bare: Soren, my captor, is strangely fascinated by me. By what I hide. Of the scars I have.

I’m unwillingly drawn to him. To his brutality. He harbors the same viciousness that coats my veins. He even seems persistent in taking me for himself…

He’ll either be my reckoning, or my undoing.

The Witcher Meets Pirates of the Caribbean

This Dark Fantasy Romance is a Duet full of foul language, sensual scenes, and improper bastards.

Content Warning 18+: This series contains explicit scenes (3.5 chili peppers), depictions of war, battle violence, abduction, graphic depiction of violence, drugging, and overall a very crude world.
