Welcome to the tour for next installment in D.M. Simmons Children of the Fallen series, Legacy in Ruin! Now available on Amazon!
Legacy in Ruin is the second installment in D.M. Simmons’s Children of the Fallen Series. Book two picks up where book one left off with Nev and her guys taking a moment to relax after the chaos of the fight and revelations that proved their warnings to be true. Sasha and Logan were proven to be untrustworthy. Worse yet? They are members of the Calamity and will do whatever it takes to bring Nev down and destroy her. The good side to it all? Nev and Declan have solidified their relationship. But where does that leave Luca and Kai? Well, as far as Nev is concerned, they are her friends and always will be. Too bad they won’t be satisfied with playing that position. It’s Luca’s turn to push for more and he has every intention of getting the girl he loves.
Legacy in Ruin continues the drama and the fall out of the Calamity making themselves known. They are determined to destroy Nev inorder to bring about the change in their quest for power. Meanwhile, Nev, her family, and her men are working to figure out who can be trusted and who cannot be trusted. They are learning that there are weak links in their own organizations. Now? One of them must do something that he swore he would never do. So now that will open the door for Nev to take a chance if she so chooses?
Hoping for things to move at a quicker pace? Well, don’t get too hopeful. The drama is meant to build and build it will. Nev is really resistant to pursuing anything with anyone but Declan. He’s mortal, and she’s immortal, but she believes that he owns her heart and every other part of her. So she’s quick to throw cold water on Luca (not literally) any time he tries to push things.
The back and forth between these characters vacillates between teenager like behavior and more mature behavior. Luca handles things more adult like than Nev. Nev tends to resort to more childish behavior and then turns around and says “don’t treat me like a child.” In my mind I couldn’t help thinking “then don’t pout and act like one!” There are moments where it’s difficult to remember that these characters are NOT teens, but are individuals in their 20s.
Another dark mark against this book happens in the prologue. Nev is 13 years old. The author makes a strong point of indicating that Nev is growing and maturing at the same rate as a regular mortal. So, you’re going to think – “okay, so puberty is KICKING IN.” She’s developing a stronger interest in the guys she spends so much of her time with and all that jazz. Right? Well, apparently not. Apparently when it comes to the hormone factor she’s already further along with that particular element. I say that because things head toward hot, bothered and steamy when she shares a kiss with Luca. Honestly, I could have let it go, BUT when Luca says (later on in the book) that “he wished he could have told his 17-year-old self to man up...so that he could fuck her first.” Yeah, that’s a no go for me. Yes, nothing happened when she was 13 but still to elude to the possibility that something could have...in an adult novel...I’m no prude but...ick. LOL! I’m sorry, but that’s just me.
Thankfully, the book gets back on track and there is little to no further mention of all of THAT. Please, spare me from any further of that. LOL! I love steamy situations and pent up heat, but not when they are literally underage and just hitting puberty. LOL! Yes, I’m trying to bring some lightness to all of this.
The title of this story ties in briefly. It’s literally blink and it’s gone. A stronger tie in would have been absolutely great, because it’s something that readers really look for when it comes to the novel that they are reading.
While you get glimpses of what the Calamity and those aligned with them are up to, you don’t get as much as one would expect. The Calamity have literally showed their hand, so getting more of what is going on with them would be an absolute bonus. We get alternating chapters with Nev and Luca, but it would also benefit to have a chapter here and there with someone in league with the Calamity plotting. Nothing to reveal exactly what is going on, but just enough to pique the reader’s interest in what is coming next.
The ending of this book will leave you craving more steamy and with some serious questions as well. It’s not a major cliffhanger for those who hate them, but it will be enough to pique your interest in what comes next for Nev and her men. Let’s just hope that the Calamity will make more of an appearance and will maybe even get a chapter or two to really set the stage for what’s to come.
4 out of 5 stars

A Cursed Throne
Publication Date: February 27th, 2023
Genre: Why Choose/ Dark Fantasy Romance
I
am my mother’s daughter. Princess, born to an angel. Who also
happens to be The Queen of Hell, and Leader of the Legion, the group
of fallen angels that divided Heaven.
But I am also my
father’s progeny. Daughter of a daemon. Sired when his blood was
half mortal after the Devil shot him and tried to claim my
mother.
The spirit of Heaven, fires of Hell, and blood of
mankind runs through my veins, along with the destiny to either rule
or destroy those kingdoms. The crown I was born with is heavy. My
powers, beyond that which created the universe. But neither have ever
felt a burden thanks to Declan, Kai, and Luca.
For as long
as I can remember it’s been the four of us. One mortal, two
children of the Fallen, and an heir like no other. Bound by an
unconventional childhood, we were best friends, and they were my
world. But in the blink of an eye they were gone, cutting me out of
their life as if I never mattered at all.
So I did what I
had to do. I left them, and our shared world behind, and started a
new one. Keeping their three traitorous hearts, far from my
own.
It’s been three years since the last time we saw
each other, and I haven’t forgotten or forgiven. It’s time to
come home and get even.
Angel, daemon, mortal…the blood
of all three is in me. I am the heir of each bloodline. But when it
comes to power, there is none greater than a heart scorned.
A
Cursed Throne is a why-choose romance, meaning the main female
character gains multiple love interests over the course of the
series. It is the first book of three in the second phase of the
After the Fall Universe. It is not necessary to read phase one, but
highly recommended. This series has dark elements and themes that may
be triggering for some readers, including strong language and sexual
situations.
