The Voice Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for The Voice by John Reid! Read on for more details!

The Voice by John Reid is a DCI Steve Burt Mystery and the fifth book in this series. This book can be read as a stand-alone novel, but it's good to have a base to build-on concerning the main character.

DCI Steve Burt is having a life-changing year. His wife is due to have their first baby, and he's going to have to adjust to what that means. His job will remain the same, but the stakes are only going to be getting higher as the world of warfare is changing. A mystery man simply called "The Voice" is setting pieces in play for a theft that could rock the world when a weapons delivery system is targetted. How will he handle this situation and the threats that it brings?

The Voice is a procedural and very meticulous novel to read. The author lays out DCI Burt's day to day work life and gives you glimpses of his homelife throughout the book. In the early chapters you see where certain characters begin to lay the groundwork for change. One particular character is being set-up to step up into another's place because either they have failed "The Voice" or have become problematic in another way.

There are two particular characters who bring a spot of humor to the novel. I can't help but feel bad for the guy who has to deal with him. When he starts thinking "it's time to get rid of this idiots" I can't help but whole-heartedly agree. I have to admit that they bring a bit of comedic relief to the story because of just how incompetent they are. I was literally like...how are they still around if they can't even do the simplest tasks without asking fifty questions? All they needed was just one more "thug" and they could have been the three stooges. LOL!

As the story progresses the drama gradually ramps up, but it does take a little while. Just hang in there and keep reading. The author is laying the groundwork for what is coming. Once things are established the drama ramps up and this book really becomes a page-turner. I'm curious about DCI Burt's previous cases and dealings, so I will be going and checking out the previous books in this series.

I'm rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. For readers who enjoy suspense novels with procedural elements then you're going to enjoy this novel.

Thank you to the author, John Reid, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Voice

Publication Date: March 31, 2022

Genre: Mystery/ Suspense/ Crime Fiction/ Police Procedural

The world of warfare is changing, and a new weapons delivery system developed secretly in the UK is targeted by an international terrorist gang who set out to steal it on instructions from “The Voice”. “The Voice” is a mysterious mastermind who uses an electronic device to disguise his voice and keep his identity hidden.

DCI Steve Burt is asked by his old Army Commander to search for his son, a serving Army officer who is missing. This unofficial inquiry becomes part of an official investigation and takes the DCI into a world of international intrigue, terrorism, murder and corruption at the highest level of government and the Metropolitan Police. The evidence always leads back to “The Voice” but who is he? Unearthing a phantom is a difficult task even for DCI Burt.
