Inhuman Acts is a suspenseful thriller that will pull you in from the beginning and keep you page-turning all the way to the end. Brooke L. French writes a story that will be hard to put down once you start, so make sure you clear your schedule before you pick this book up.

Inhuman Acts kicks off with a tragic, and unforeseen loss of life. No one could have predicted the loss of life of someone so young, and in such an inexplicable way. Yet, that is exactly how tragic deaths tend to strike – in the most inexplicable ways. A year later, Letty is still struggling with what happened. The anniversary is coming, but she’s soon going to have something else to focus her attention on. News breaks of a rabies infection in a young woman. The locals want to say that the infection is under control, but is it? Or is there something more sinister going on that the local politicians want to bury as quickly as possible? Letty is willing to risk it all to get to the bottom of what is threatening to ravage Chattanooga. Her reputation, her sanity, but is she willing to risk her life? She just might have to before she can uncover the truth about what is happening.

Inhuman Acts is a stunning success when it comes to debut novels. The author quickly pulls you in with the unfolding drama in the beginning. While it doesn’t tie into the deaths in Chattanooga, it ties in in a different way. The author gives readers rabies infections in a strange and stark way. When you hear “rabies infection” your first thoughts go to – raccoons, skunks, and bats. You think bites, scratches, and bizarre attacks. What you get are situations that just don’t make sense at face value. Dig deeper. The truth is out there.

Letty is an interesting character. She’s looking for something to take her mind off the loss of her beloved sister. The year anniversary is just around the corner. But when this rabies case surfaces she sees her chance to do something. To be back out in the field doing what she loves. She has something to look forward to – a teaching position, but it’s not really what she wants. She knows that her stepping into someone else’s “backyard” is a risk, but it’s one she’s willing to take.

The story doesn’t solely focus on Letty though. The author takes you between several other characters as well. That element helps keep you engaged in the storyline. Each character contributes in their own way building the story up. Letty and another character, Andrew, are the main focus because they are what drives the narrative. Brace yourself. There are some intense moments in this book. You will literally be on the edge of your seat trying to guess what is going to happen next. You’ll be hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst.

Throughout this book, the author pays a lot of attention to detail. You get the characters, but you also get the strange behaviors of animals. This is intentional in more ways than one. One is let you see that some animal behavior is just erratic, strange to say the least but nothing to get in a twist behind. Then there are others of where humans are impacting the environment around them and that directly impacts the animals themselves. It’s enough to really encourage readers to take a step back and look at how they are impacting the environment around them. Though there are some situations that are just truly bizarre and will leave you with questions long after the story is over.

There is a lot going on in this book. You get the relationships between the characters – suspicion, drama, anger, romance, fear, and jealousy. The author works hard to bring the characters across as real as possible. Their behavior is truly believable, and one character is one hell of an actor. You’ll see what I mean when you dive into this book.

The suspense element is well done in this novel. You have the outbreak of the rabies cases, and the author keeps you page-turning with curiosity. You’re eager to find out – is this an animal outbreak? Did something happen in this one particular scene that set the stage? Or is there something more that we’re just not seeing in the moment? Then add in Andrew’s situation and you’re really on pins and needles. LOL! Andrew’s situation is tied to the rabies outbreak, but as a cop, his goes in a darker direction at the same time. You’re going to love how the author gives you a taste of the legal side (her background) in that area. You’ll be chomping at the bit in a few scenes.

This is a stand-alone novel, but the ending honestly has me hoping for more. I’d love to read more about Letty and find out what happens next with her. She has some seriously close calls in this book, but the future sounds like it might be filled with some good things. I’d love to read another book with her in it.

For me, this book more than earns it’s 5 out of 5 stars. This author did a fantastic job engaging me fully into this book. I practically devoured it trying to figure out how things would play out. I look forward to future books by this author. Job well done!

Inhuman Acts

Publication Date: September 29th, 2022

Genre: Thriller

Publisher: Black Rose Writing

A deadly, incurable disease creeps silent through Chattanooga. And its victims aren’t random.

When inexplicable human rabies cases appear in Tennessee, disease ecologist Letty Duquesne jumps at the chance to trace the virus back to its source. But the closer Letty gets to finding the outbreak’s origin, the further someone will go to stop her.

With an unwanted promotion threatening to take Letty far from the fieldwork she loves, this outbreak feels like her last chance to make a difference. It’s not something she can ignore, especially now. The spillover of zoonotic diseases to the human population is on the rise and violent animal attacks-like the one that killed her sister-are becoming all too common.

Something in nature has gone very wrong.

Local authorities would rather she go home, but Letty can track a source animal like no one else. With the help of disgraced detective Andrew Marsh, Letty follows the virus’s epidemiological trail. But her every move is watched. And the source animal is closer than she thinks.
