The Siege of Corell Review Spotlight

Terin and company are back in The Siege of Corell. We hope you're ready and excited for what's coming, because it's going to be an epic ride!

The Siege of Corell is book two in the Chronicles of Arax series. Terin and his friends are still fighting the good fight against Tyro, but there have been and will continue to be losses as innocents die at the claws and teeth of the gargoyles. There is only so much that they can do against the blood-thirsty creatures.

But the stakes are only getting higher! Book one left readers with a cliffhanger of "What is going to happen next." Terin now has Tyro's people hunting him because of a necklace that his father gave him. Cronus? He gets free from one problem and finds himself almost immediately in another. Will these people just let him go free? No? Okay, well, that just makes sense because we need and want a story. LOL!

Cronus has managed to be freed from the dungeons. Great news, right? What is the next problem? Getting to safety. Oy-vee. That's not going to be easy, especially with another of the group of friends being hunted - Raven. Raven, you better watch out because Tosha is coming for you! Honestly, I don't know who he should hope to find him first, but I'm leaning toward Tosha. If it's one of Tyro's other minions then it won't be good for him, that's for sure!

Noticeably less seen in this book will be Raven and the crew. It will be a bit disappointing especially since his crew tends to bring a good amount of drama, but some humor, too. We can't help but be fans of theirs especially when their android brings some unexpected wise-cracks so effortlessly.

Author Sanford continues this series giving readers a wide variety of characters. Of course, with some losing their lives, and others being captured or simply being forced to go into hiding we get some new ones introduced to keep the storyline going and very much engaging.

As in book one, this story traverses land and sea, and for some of these characters, by air, as they fight to keep Arax from falling completely into Tyro's vicious grip. The gargoyles continue to be a problem that will not be easily dealt with. They have been around for a long time, and appear to be the intended thorn in the side of the defenders.

Terin especially continues to grow as a character. He's learning more about himself and the sword that he carries. His skill continues to grow and develop, but he's learning to not completely depend on the sword. Because what should happen if he loses it in the middle of a battle? If you've read book one, you'll know that might be a touch far-fetched to believe, but anything is possible.

Author Sanford is going to throw in more than a twist or two with this book, so brace yourself. They will come in the most unexpected places and probably cue a jaw-drop or two. We personally delighted in every single one of them.

True to form Author Sanford is going to leave readers on a cliffhanger when it comes to the end of The Siege of Corell. Things may have worked out well for our friends overall in this installment, but the future, for us, is unknown and we will have to wait and see what comes next for young Terin, Cronus, Raven and the others we have come to know throughout this series thus far.

Pros:

Page-turner
Great storytelling
Interesting characters
Twists and surprises

Cons:

Some of the characters were lacking in appearance

Of War and Heroes Review Spotlight

Of War and Heroes is the first book in Benjamin Sanford’s The Chronicles of Arax. This fantasy novel will blend magic with some scifi but will absolutely take readers on ride of a story that will keep you coming back for more.

Of War and Heroes draws the reader in with a cover depicting a fight scene between two warriors front and center. Their swords flashing – one with a white light, and the other with the colors like a flame. It appears that they are doing battle at a castle as towers loom in the background. To the right, is are a pair of men wielding guns shooting the enemy appearing on the left side of the cover and the monsters coming in from the sky. This cover alone promises a gripping novel to check out.

As the reader delves into Of War and Heroes they will be taken to a scene of a small farm. There readers will meet young Terin. Terin is preparing to leave his family behind and travel to the city. There he is being sent to work as a scribe and apprentice to Torry ambassador, Squid. Terin does not wish to leave his family behind, because he knows the hardships that they will endure without him, but he is sent on his way as they hope for him to have a better life than the one he currently leads.

Of War and Heroes is told from the third person perspective. Terin is an interesting character, and he is one that will be easy for readers to like and be drawn to. Little by little readers will discover that there is more to Terin than meets the eye. Whether it is Terin himself or the sword that his father has given him. He will have quite the journey ahead of him.

Of War and Heroes alternates between a variety of characters. There will not be any distinctions to let readers know when a new character is about to be the focal point of the story. The only indication that readers will get will be a slightly larger than usual gap between the paragraphs. These will be your clues that the story is about to shift to another character and leave the one you are currently following behind for the time being.

Initially, these transitions were confusing, but as we got the lay of the story we knew what to expect when we came across them. The pacing of the story tends to be slower when not immersed in a drama packed moment, but it still manages to keep the reader engaged and curious as to what is going to transpire next.

Expecting horrific monsters to be harassing the good people of this story? Well, there really won’t be any of those – just monstrous gargoyles who will rip you to shreds and devour you. Author Sanford does an excellent job playing up the horrors these creatures wreck on the people of various towns.

Brace yourself for tales of horror and heartbreak as several of the characters (mostly side characters) will relate stories that will make you truly hate the gargoyles and their true cruelty.

Readers get a nice variety of characters in this book. You get people who hail from Earth – Raven and his crew, who came on a space ship and became stranded due to not having the parts to repair the ship. Then you have soldiers that Terin meets and befriends on his way to Rego to take up his new role as a scribe.

Author Sanford will tease readers with the fear that negative drama will unfold in the least inopportune of moments, especially in an early scene that plays out with Terin and when he meets Cronus after he, Terin, nearly gets robbed by an ocran thief.

The pace of this story is slower than we would have liked at times, but then things do ramp up and this book becomes a real page-turner. To be expected there is a lot of back and forth when it comes to the pacing. It could be that we were simply finding our stride in the story, or that is just the true pace, but it creates an interesting story.

Towards the end author Sanford begins to seed readers with the feeling that things are heading towards a cliff. Terin is about to find himself being hunted by the enemy, as will Cronus. How will this play out for these two characters? Terin is still learning and discovering more about his sword, but now more danger lies in store for him.

It will definitely be interesting to see where things go from here. Packed with fantasy, drama, some romance sprinkled in, an enemy on the march with the intent to dominate all, this book is sure to delight many a reader who enjoys epic fantasy!

Pros:

  • Page-turner
  • Good storytelling
  • Dynamic
  • Nice variety of characters
  • Leaves you wanting more

Cons:

  • Pacing was slow at times

Merchants of Light and Bone Review Spotlight

Welcome to the book tour for author Erika McCorkle's Merchants of Light and Bone with The Write Reads! If you enjoy epic fantasy novels with beautiful descriptions and engaging characters then this is novel for you!

Merchants of Light and Bone is a standalone fantasy novel written by Erika McCorkle. Author McCorkle will take readers on a fantastical journey to a beautiful world full of imaginative characters that will captivate the mind and have you wanting to linger for as long as possible. As you explore this novel, you will find yourself along for the journey as a family struggles with the grief of losing a loved one, and then with the struggle to do what they feel is right for the sake of another innocent life.

Merchants of Light and Bone is sure to capture your attention with it’s gorgeously detailed cover. This book’s cover alone conveys the depths of this story. With a myriad of wild life they seem to swirl around and almost swallow up two of the main characters of this story – Amiere while he holds in his embrace his partner, Su. Behind, almost beside them is their faithful Shroom Hound – Maika. Yes, those are actual mushrooms growing on her. This marks her as beautifully unique and adorable.

The giant skeleton behind them all with the animals appearing to be reaching for the top truly draws the eye and teases your mind to want to know more. What is this skeleton? Is it an animal? Is it a demon? What created this thing? At the bottom you see the crystals – the very thing that cost this family the life of one of their daughter’s. Just a little to the right, almost seemingly to be what Maika is looking at – a kiwi with a glowing bell sitting next to it. The very fruit that young Tawny loved, and the bell that she always wore on her tail.

This book’s cover alone is a feast for the eyes, and tells parts of the story that is held inside these covers. One thing is for sure, it will pique your interest in learning more about the family and how they manage to move forward after the heartbreaking loss that affects them so deeply, while crystals promise to bring a time of prosperity to the town.

Merchants of Light and Bone is a story that focuses heavily on Amiere, the merchant of light. He, his wife – Liesle, and Su, the merchant of bone, their partner start the story off in morning for the loss of their daughter Tawny. When the crevice in the earth opened up, she unfortunately fell to her death. This is not a scenario that plays out on the page. Instead, author McCorkle, gives readers a memory of the tragedy through the mind of Amiere.

Readers watch as each member of this family struggle with the loss of their daughter or sister in their own way. As the tragedy is fresh, it is dealt with through tears, lack of desire to truly function or be productive. Of course, each character deals with the tragedy differently. Some sink into even deeper depression, while others seek to find outlets through their work or simply trying to take care of the family and focus on those who still remain.

A small shift begins when someone from their past makes a reappearance – Miltico. There are some bad feelings between him and Amiere especially. As you read the story you’ll quickly come to understand why. Miltico is a rather cruel and vile character, but he suits the purpose of bringing some drama to the story and giving Amiere something to focus on. Why is that? Well, Miltico has a small daughter and he is less than kind to the poor child.

Each of the characters depicted in this book are so beautifully unique. Amiere and his family carry more feline traits in their appearance. Do all the characters carry these traits? No. Miltico and his family lean more towards goats, and his daughter is more of a mix of goat and rabbit. Is it wrong that we just wanted to stroke her adorably long ears? LOL! Of course, young Usana is a rather flighty child, but there are some understandable elements to it...one namely being her father.

The pacing of this story is on the slower side, but there are some engaging moments sprinkled throughout that will draw readers in more and have them eagerly page-turning to find out what happens next. While the story is told through the eyes of Amiere, author McCorkle sprinkles in interludes throughout the story that give readers an idea of what some of the other characters in this story are experiencing themselves. These interludes help to give the story more depth as these interludes include the other children, and spouses.

Merchants of Light and Bone is a dynamic novel that draws you in and fully immerses you in a world full of interesting and beautifully created characters. You get tension, drama, some elements of horror, and a ton of family dynamics. Amiere is a truly engaging character as he struggles with the loss of his daughter, and weighing how to move on, along with the emotions that he feels towards Miltico. Of course, life doesn’t care about what you have going on when you are mourning, and that is effortlessly showcased in this book.

Sorrow in paradise

A parent’s worst nightmare

When grief drives one to revenge

Living in a tropical paradise with his spouses and kids, Amiere is a merchant of light, a sculptor who carves glowing crystals into spectacular and powerful, demon-killing works of art. When the ground opens up near his idyllic village to reveal a massive supply of crystals, the whole nation of Aloutia celebrates. The merchants are guaranteed money for decades and officials predict Aloutia will be safe from demonkind for generations. But Amiere isn’t rejoicing—when the ground split apart, his seven-year-old daughter fell to her death.

Amiere’s grief turns to rage when an old enemy returns to the village with a young daughter displaying signs of starvation and abuse. Having witnessed his own daughter’s death, Amiere cannot bear the thought of watching another child die, especially when he can prevent it. Unable to ask police for help due to the village’s reputation of hostility toward authority figures, Amiere takes matters into his own hands, even at the risk of being exiled and separated from his family forever.

Bound by Scars and Secrets Review Spotlight

To celebrate the release of the sequel Bound by Promises & Lies in February, we’re going back to the beginning with Bound by Scars and Secrets!

Bound by Scars and Secrets is Sienna Archer's first book in her Realms of Magic series, and it's a book that you're not going to want to miss!

Bound by Scars and Secrets lures readers in with a gorgeous cover that showcases as spear, and small sparks of magic surrounding the character. It is but a small prelude of what is to come hidden within these pages.

Bound by Scars and Secrets details the story of Alathea as she simply fights for survival. She is protected by the Sancta, whom she etches the "truths" into stone for. She and her sister were seemingly abandoned by their mothers. But why? Alathea has magic inside her, but magic is forbidden. It is taught that it is evil, to be feared, and hated. Only "Truths" are allowed to be spoken and anything else will see you hauled away in a wagon, never to be seen again.

Alathea has a sister, Soli, whom she wishes to protect from the world, but when her sister makes a choice that will impact them both, Alathea will do anything to protect her.

This book is a page-turner, that will keep you coming back for more. The dynamics between the sisters is interesting. Soli is more out-going and determined to take on the world, while Alathea is the exact opposite. It's understandable because Alathea has seen what magic can do. She fears it now, and even more so since she's been taught through the "Truths" to fear it and shun it.

Fate has other plans for her though. Not just her though...her and her sister. Her sister will be the catalyst that draws her in and tugs her into a realm where magic is everything and is needed if she is going to protect the place that she once called home.

Packed with twists and turns this story is going to lead you on quite the ride. Alathea will grow little by little, but you'll also get some hints of romance between not just one, but two characters. Where is this going to lead? Only way to find out is to dive into this story and see for yourself.

This is a YA novel, so things are kept pretty much nice and easy. No steamy scenes or anything like that. You get blushes, glances, and fighting against feelings, but that's all part of the fun really. Remember, this book is part of a series, so there will be an ending that leaves you wondering...what happens next? Good news though? Book 2? Coming soon! So you won't have to wait long!

4.5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Sienna Archer, and R&R Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book! I look forward to what comes next!

*Apologies to the author and the tour for my late post. Due to heavy rains my internet is currently out, and I didn't have the means to properly post this on my schedule date/time.

Bunny's Top Books for 2023

Bunny's Top Books for 2023

2023 is coming to a close, and I wanted to end it on a high note. I've read many books, joined multiple book tours, and discovered many new authors. It's been a great year! Despite some of the negativity, I've enjoyed most of it, and, unfortunately, overloaded myself a few times. LOL! I'm not hitting my Goodreads goal this year, but we'll see what the new year holds. Hopefully lots of fun books, and more new discoveries!

Now! I'm going to share with you some of my top favorites of this year. You're going to see a couple of authors on here twice. Yes, twice! Why? Because they've written some seriously good books! Also, those books may or may not be part of an ongoing series. LOL!

Before we get into the list...these are not in any particular order!!! So, don't get mad at me (authors who are featured. LOL). Seriously! I love you all. LOL!

#1 Curse of the Fallen

H.C. Newell's Fallen Light series was a series I discovered this year through Escapist Book Tours. OMG! This book (and series) is ridiculously good! Looking for a page-turner that will keep you coming back for more? Then grab this book. Side note, if you haven't grabbed a copy yet, this book (book 1) is still available for $0.99!! It's a steal! Though I will warn you of this...book one's ending? It's going to have you raging. Good news for you? Books two and three are readily available! LOL!

Wondering if books 2 and 3 make my list of faves? You bet!

#2 The Forbidden Realms

Nerana's story continues in H.C. Newell's second book in the series, The Forbidden Realms. Book two picks up where book one left off and keeps you page-turning to find out what Nerana is going to be up against as she finds herself deep in the wastelands.
Newell paints such vivid pictures in this book that you can almost picture yourself there with the characters alongside them. Nerana must fight for every inch of ground she claims with her feet, and try to stay ahead of those who hunt her. This addition to the series is riveting. Make sure you clear your schedule, grab snacks, and hide from your responsibilities and family to get through this book. LOL!

#3 Shadows of Nyn'Dira

Shadows of Nyn'Dira is the "fourth" book in the series and H.C. Newell's latest release in the series. This cover is honestly my favorite out of the entire series. I mean, look at it! It's gorgeous! Newell's epic storytelling and world-building continue in this book and it is phenomenal. The world-building is absolutely captivating and the author introduces some new characters that are truly going to engage you even more.

Want to check out the series for yourself? Click on the link and get started!

#4 Sea of Souls

Sea of Souls is another gem that I discovered through Escapist Book Tours. Author N.C. Scrimgeour promises readers selkies, drama, danger, open ocean, and secrets, and boy does this author deliver! As a reader, I was swept away. The author beautifully mixes together Scottish folklore with dark fantasy and a touch of magic. Don't go into this book expecting magic everywhere because you'll be disappointed, so make a note of that. Understand? LOL
This author writes an engaging story that will keep you gripped as the main character navigates what she must do. But does she seek the truth? Or honor the promise that she made to her brother? Minor spoiler alert...prepare to have your mind...BLOWN!
Love a good fantasy novel? Love pirates, high seas, and mythical creatures? Grab this book!

Available now on Amazon

#5 Gothic

Let's shift gears here for a minute and move to horror. If you know me, you know I loooooooooooovvvee horror. LOL! The gorier, creepier, the more twisted the better. If it has elements of the supernatural consider me sold and your new best friend. LOL!
Gothic is Philip Fracassi's contribution to the horror community and OMG! This book is stupid good! Gothic was the first book that I have read by Fracassi and I couldn't put it down. I wasn't even halfway through the book before I was like "okay, what else has he written because I want it all!" LOL!
Love a book about cursed items? Twisted elements that keep you coming back for more? Then Gothic is going to be the book for you!

Gothic is available now on Amazon

#6 Starlight Jewel
E.L. Lyons has created a true gem with their book, Starlight Jewel. If the cover doesn't pique your interest I encourage you to read the blurb for this book - assassins, half-human hybrids, a brewing war, secrets, and a slow-burn romance. This book is chef's kiss. Gripping, tantalizing, and a real page-turner.
You'll meet Axly, a hybrid assassin with one goal in mind - do whatever it takes to protect her human half-brother. She has escaped her old way of life, but if returning to it means her brother is safe it's what she'll do.
This is the first book that I have read by E.L. Lyons and let me tell you...I DE-VOURED this book. When it was done? I was literally begging the author for more. Yes, this book is going to be part of a series. Rejoice people! There will be more to come! When? Uh...yeah, I don't know, but hopefully next year! We'll just have to wait and see because creativity takes time and I'm willing to wait.
This book is absolutely worth checking out and easily earns its place in my list of top faves.

Grab a copy on Amazon

#7 Heros of the Empire: The Cavalier
Heroes of the Empire: The Cavalier is the first book in author Israh Azizi's new series, and this book is jaw-droppingly good. I discovered this book through a tour with R&R Book Tours where I was able to read and review this book. If you want, you can find my review and read it for yourself on my blog.
Author Azizi creates a truly fantastic epic fantasy world where the world is crumbling as war rampages across the landscape. It's wildly good.
You're going to meet an array of characters, but the story will primarily focus on two - Velamir and Natassa. Both characters are on opposite ends of the spectrum but they work together to bring an engaging story to life that will keep you coming back for more. The downside? The cliffhanger ending! Granted, I read this book earlier this year, so I've been sitting on pins and needles for book two.
Good news though! Book two was published last month!!! I just learned this so onto my wishlist book two goes! Hopefully, I'll be able to grab it for my birthday!
Readers who enjoy a page-turning epic fantasy novel should absolutely grab this book!

#8 The Return of the Knights
Another gem that was discovered through Escapist Book Tours, The Return of the Knights by Gregory Kontaxis is another epic fantasy readers dream come true. This book gives you fantastic world-building along with a TON of drama that will keep you glued to the pages.
The book starts off in one direction before quickly shifting to war (yes, another one) marching across the land. A usurper is on the march to claim a crown that is not his to have. He's destroying everything in his path. No one and nothing is safe. Either you are with him and you live (if you survive the fights) or you're against him and you will die.
This book is "Game of Thrones meets Greek mythology." When they say this they are not lying. Prepare for jaw-dropping moments, and a strong desire to isolate yourself from the world until you have reached the final page of this book. Yes, it is that good. While I wait, patiently impatient, I will be taking the time to reread this book so that when book two comes...I'm primed and ready to devour. LOL!
You're getting a lot with this book - drama, secrets, war, magic, chaos, and...yes, a cliffhanger. But it's worth it!! So...grab a copy!!

Available on Amazon

#9 Golden
Golden by Shannon Mayer is the start of a new series that takes The Little Mermaid throws it in a shaker and throws in Loki and gives it a good shake. Because that's how we like our books...shaken...not stirred. LOL! This book is a fantastic start to the series and had me screaming for more. Which is why book 2 comes screaming into the next slot on the list!

#10 Glitter
If you thought that being turned into a golden retriever was bad, wait until you dive into book 2! Things are getting even more chaotic! Cin, the main character, has a ton of shit on her plate and it's epic. Everyone, and I mean practically EVERYONE is out to get her. Why? Well, I can't tell you that! That'd be like opening up a dam of information because once we get going...we ain't stopping! LOL! Just know, this book gives you tons to enjoy while giving you some of the old Viking gods. Brace yourself for utter chaos and tons of shenanigans that author Shannon Mayer is absolutely notorious for when it comes to her books.

Grab yours today on Amazon

#11 A Breaking of Realms
Breaking of Realms is the first book in the Realm Breaker series and this book is an epic fantasy novel that readers are not going to want to miss out on. Do you love dragons? Grab this book. Do you love a good fantasy novel? Grab this book! Do you love chonky books? Grab. This. Book! Okay, grab book two as well, because the author has written something truly fantastic with this series. Don't worry book three is scheduled to drop late next year. Cue excited screaming because you know I'm doing it. LOL!
This book has dragons, elves, war, drama, chaos and so much more. You're getting fantastic characters, amazing world-building, and fantastical dragons and other creatures. This book is ridiculously good and one that is highly recommended by this reader.
Author Jasmine Young has really hit her stride with this series (you'll see once you start reading) and truly shines combining dragons with Vikings, and an epic world that is truly breathtaking.

Books 1 & 2 are currently available on Amazon

#12 When Monsters Lie
Clocking in on the list is Debbie Cassidy's When Monsters Lie. OMG! This book took me by surprise and kept me coming back for more!! FYI, book four JUST released! So don't hesitate to dive into this series!
When Monsters Lie is a mix of post-apocalypse meets paranormal and with fantastic results. Monsters roam the world now, and nothing is the same. Humans are scraping by simply trying to survive. Death is an ever-present threat. But there's hope. The celestials. They promise a brighter future and appear...at times, to offer some semblance of hope. But to also collect "chosen" humans to come back with them to their citadel...on Earth.
Everything goes to pot all across the world when a certain shake-up takes place. Cue utter chaos and me glued to this book like it's going to breathe life into me. LOL! Author Cassidy doesn't just give you the characters, a few close calls, and call it a story. No! She gives you full-blown glimpses of the horrific creatures that roam Earth. It's crazy good but prepare for some serious twists that will have your jaw on the floor and raging for books two, three, and four.

Check out the series now on Amazon

#13 Oracle's Vision
Here to clock in next is Alan Bayles's Oracle's Vision. This book is a tsunami of drama that will keep you page-turning to the end. The ending isn't as chilling as book one, but you'll be eagerly anticipating what comes next.
Oracle's Vision is author Bayles's latest addition to his sci-fi series Mirror Wars. Imagine that your reflection was watching you. Plotting against you. Now, imagine that there is an AI intent on conquering the world as you know it and making you their unwilling slave. Sound like a good read? Then this is the book for you! This author explores the theory of the multiverse and doppelgangers. Two worlds under threat, and an all-knowing/seeing being who is looking to help tip the balance in favor of humanity.
Oracle's Vision packs a punch and certain scenes will absolutely have your jaw on the floor and one in particular will bring tears to your eyes. This author is one you don't want to miss when it comes to epic sci-fi novels.

This book is not available yet, but it is up for pre-order now on Amazon

#14 The Cat Lady Special
This book's cover may not look like something that will make you stop in your tracks, but the storyline is one that will grab you. Author D.C. Gomez really brings her A-game with this book. It starts out a little dark and may raise some concerns for some readers, but I promise you...it gets better.
The main character, Angela, is "down on her luck" the world is not on her side right now, but then things take a turn. Her original plans are derailed and she's shown that she still has a purpose on this Earth.
Prepare for drama, humor (tons of humor), and for this book to put the peddle to the metal and keep you entertained.
This book is just the first in a series, and I know that I'm eager for to find out what happens next with Angela and her crew. This book is one of those surprise treats that comes out of nowhere and keeps you coming back for more.

#15 Plague Unleashed
Yes, another D.C. Gomez book. But trust me, this book deserves its place. Why? Because it's hilarious! Yes, it's book two in a series, but it can be read as a standalone! I promise. I've read book 1, but it's been a good while, so when I dove into book two, it took a minute before I remembered everything. LOL!
The gang is back! Isis, Bart, Bob, and my favorite, Constantine (the talking cat) are back and ready to rumble! LOL! Okay, maybe not so ready to rumble, because when zombies start popping up... it's chaos. LOL!
Zombies, disgruntled ex-employees, magic, chaos, and absolute hilarity ensue in this book. The hilarity is center stage with this book as Isis must deal with a running spirit, zombies, another Horseman, and...her dating life...or lack thereof.
Look, this book and series is absolutely hilarious. Death's Interns are going to have one hell of a time in this book, and you're going to be cracking up the entire way through. This book is an absolute must-read and one of my favorites for 2023.

#16 Bridge to Magic
The Bridge to Magic is Alex Thornbury's debut novel and it is fantastic. A coming of age novel packed with suspense, horror, thrills, and magic.
Man has gotten rid of magic. But then why is there destruction marching on a relentless path to wipe out everything before it? People seek a place of escape, but with the Blight before them and a tattered bridge behind them...what choices do they have? Stay? Or attempt the bridge and cross to the other side...to the unknown...
This book is a fascinating story that will keep you page-turning to find out what happens next. Book two is recently available so once you devour book one, you can easily move forward to book two and find out what happens next.
This is yet another book that I couldn't get enough and was fortunate to discover via R&R Book Tours, where I read and reviewed this book this year. It's definitely an engaging character with an interesting character who is just trying to survive, but holds a secret deep inside herself.

Sky of Thorns Review Spotlight

We’re celebrating the release of Fleur DeVillainy’s Sky of Thorns! Read on for more details and add this beauty to your TBR!

Sky of Thorns by Fleur Devillainy is the first book in The Vandeleur Trilogy and you are going to be super excited to check this book out! This is a fantasy shifter romance, but this author is bringing us something fresh!! Yes! Fresh!!! We're getting UNICORN shifters!! Cue excited screaming. LOL!

If this cover doesn't grab your attention and pique your interest I honestly don't know what will. This book and title promises to draw you into a fantasy realm that is going to have you coming back for more.

Sky of Thorns begins with young Sybil. All she wants is a better life, but she has resigned herself to living in her village and doing the best that she can for the people there. But all of that changes when a strange man comes barging into her home in the middle of the night, slaps a magical cuff on her wrist, and kidnaps her. WTF, right?! You're going to be left in suspense for a while, but the facts begin to come out a little bit at a time.

Sybil is being accused of treason. Treason! She's never left her village but somehow she's committed "treason" according to the king and queen. Sounds like a reach if there ever was one, and the prince, Aramis, is the one who has been tasked with bringing her in. The big question that arises for this reader is this - why him? Why him specifically? Is it because he has been raised to hate shifters, and they believe that he will get the job done handily? Hmmm...we'll just have to wait and see.

This book alternates POV between Sybil and Aramis, so you get the story from both of their perspectives. I enjoyed Sybil the most, slightly in part due to her little companion, Lemon. Amaris is a frustrating character to say the least. You'll give him a tiny amount of slack for his feelings towards shifters after getting some backstory on him, but just a teeny tiny amount of empathy goes his way. I'd honestly expect him to use his brain at some point. LOL! Question the validity of what he's been told!

Sybil is an interesting character herself. She comes off as weak, but she has hidden inner strength. Of course, I think that she makes some rash decisions that land her in precarious situations, but she's not usually alone in them.

This book is engaging from beginning to end as Sybil finds that she must put her trust and faith in Amaris. Also, Amaris must begin to question what he has been told and what is truth and lie. The puzzle is complex, but if they are going to come out of this alive...they will need to rely on each other.

This is a gripping fantasy romance novel, and I absolutely devoured it. I can't wait to find out what happens next with these characters.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Fleur DeVillainy, and R&R Book Tours, for the opportunity to read and review this book. I look forward to what comes next!

The people of Kallistar believed the land was in peace… but darkness stirs in the North…

On the eve of the autumn solstice, unicorn shifter Sybil Vandeleur is kidnapped and stolen away to the Kingdom of Shadowvale, charged with treason against the crown. Only, she has never committed any crimes.
Aramis Adrastos, crown prince of Shadowvale, is told otherwise. Tasked by his father to capture the leader of a rebel group, he corners the woman planning to infiltrate the palace and take down the kingdom from the inside. But as soon as he lays eyes on her, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. She incites his anger, fills him with longing, and makes him question everything he believes in. Her very presence tempts him to betrayal. Chained in a dungeon, at the mercy of an evil queen, Sybil’s only hope for salvation lies with the prince who was raised to loathe her, just for being a shifter.

In a world strained from rebellion and rife with injustice, two adversaries fight to overcome their prejudices and face the true enemy before them.
