Love sucks. I wasn’t much of an expert, I’d only really fallen once, but heck if I’d fallen hard. There was only one thing worse than loving someone who didn’t love you, and that was watching them fall in love with someone else. So there I was, about to do something that was probably a terrible idea—but lately all my ideas seemed terrible, so what could one more hurt?

The girl I’d been watching for the past half hour pushed away from the bar and made her way to a packed corner of the club. Her blonde hair was an unnatural white that seemed to change color with the disco lights and was almost the same color as her skin and I kept my eyes on her retreating figure as she paused by a skinny white guy wearing a ripped tee. Her hand dipped into the pocket of her high waisted jeans as she leaned in close to the guy, then she moved back to the bar. Done. Easy. I could do this.

I waited til she reclaimed her seat, the steady pulse of Christina Aguilera’s Dirty making my heart feel like it thudded too hard, and then walked over to order a drink. Her top was red and off the shoulders, not unlike something Jamie might have worn—

I gulped the drink the bartender handed me as I shook off the thought.

“Whoa. Steady there. You know they put alcohol in those things, right?” The girl grinned at me and I swallowed before offering her a smile. If you didn’t know better, then what I was about to ask her might seem perfectly natural coming from my lips—tonight, I looked the epitome of a party girl. I’d loosely curled my hair and let it run free over my shoulders, put on my highest pink velvet chunky heels and let my sparkly eye make-up be the only accessory needed to match the pink sequin mini dress.

“Well, there’s a little mixer too. Got to stay hydrated.” I laughed breathlessly and bit my lip as the girl’s eyes moved over my legs, made longer by my heels, and back up to my face. “Listen…” I leaned in close and a flirty smile tugged up the corners of her mouth. “I, um, was wondering if you have any pills?”

She leaned back, a look that might have been disappointment flashing across her face before she nodded. “Sure. What are you looking for?”

“Ah, you know.”

An eyebrow raised at my answer and I wanted to curse. “Sure, but do you?” I didn’t answer and she rolled her eyes. “Look, are you sure you want to—“

“I’m sure,” I said firmly. “I’ve just never done this before. My friend usually buys,” I added, clearing my throat a little and her eyes narrowed slightly before she nodded.

“Fine. How many do you want?”

“Just one.”

Another eyebrow raise. Crap. I was so clearly out of my depth.

“Thirty,” the girl said and I barely held in my surprise. That seemed like a lot for one pill, but I couldn’t say for sure if she was ripping me off or if I was just hopelessly naive. Either way, it didn’t matter. Thirty dollars was nothing in the face of the inheritance my parents had given me to stay out of their lives, another form of hush money—their signature move.

I slipped the cash out of my clutch and she rolled her eyes as I tried to be surreptitious about it and failed.

“Have a good night,” she said dryly, handing me a clear baggie and then shoving away from the bar.

“You too,” I murmured, the words lost in an old Taylor Swift song as I shook the pill free and examined it closely. Was I supposed to take the whole thing? I glanced around to see if I could maybe ask the white-haired drug dealer but she’d disappeared into the crowd on the dance floor.

My palms were getting sweaty and I tossed the pill back and forth between my hands, not wanting it to melt or something. Just do it. I let out a slow breath as I brought my hand to my mouth and then paused. Was I supposed to swallow it whole? Chew it? Crap, I should have just asked Jamie—

I reined my thoughts in before I could get lost in my own head, wondering what she was doing right now, where she was… probably with Ryan. Her boyfriend.

I sat back down at the bar, swiveling the seat so I faced outwards and could watch the dancers. She was the reason I’d come here. Jamie. One of them, at least.

The Divine Oblivion is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy romance. This book brings you interesting characters, and something new to the genre that will leave you eager for the next book. Let's hope that we don't have to wait too long to get it. LOL! Granted, you'll have to get book one first, so don't waste too much time going out and grabbing it. Pre-order it so that when it comes out in a week, you have it on hand to devour.

Imagine living on Earth, your whole life...or have you? But you turn 21 and then...you're kidnapped and whisked across the universe to a planet that you know nothing about? Well, surprise and happy birthday Cyra! Because that is EXACTLY what happens to her. She's told - she's not of Earth and that her grandfather? Not who he "pretended" to be either. The hits just keep on coming though. Seems like Cyra has a whole past that she has to remember (she'll have some help). She's expected to run the place and help the people there. That's not a tall order at all is? Nope, just your everyday thing that could happen to anyone. LOL!

Sound like a fun read? Trust me, it is. Cyra is a bit of a wimp at times, but she's going through an adjustment period, so we'll cut her some slack. LOL! It's pretty funny though reading about how long she goes around freaking out about her wardrobe. Okay, okay, we all would if we were walking around in our most comfortable sleepwear and got snatched. It's not like her sour puss of a kidnapper gave her a heads up and said "you've got five minutes to put something more "respectable."" LOL!

Honestly, Adelram is a bit of a jerk. He pushes her buttons and he'll push yours, too. The question really arises - "who hurt him?" No! Seriously! Who hurt him?? He's got a nasty attitude and he seems to be taking his issues on Cyra. What's the deal dude? LOL! Don't worry, you'll get a clue here and there, but before that just prepare for a lot of his snark.

Eager for more drama? Don't worry! It's coming! It's coming in spades and will leave you eager for more. Chaos is coming and Cyra is going to have to learn on a learning curve and boy is it a steep one!

The characters are well-developed in this book. It might take a minute for things to start fitting into place, but just be patient. The storyline is what will grab you the most with this book. You're going to want to know what happens next as the story unfolds and the truth about Cyra's situation becomes more center staged.

This book ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger, but it's a bit of a soft one. Regardless, you're going to be left looking forward to the next book in this series.

I'm rating this book 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Heliotrope Review Spotlight

We are thrilled to share the latest fantasy by Palmer Pickering, called Heliotrope! This one is for readers who enjoy magic, adventure and true fantasy!

Heliotrope is one of those epic fantasy novels that when you get your hands on it, you're immediately going to start drooling. The excitement is just going to start building up inside you before you even start reading it, and be the driving force as you dive deep into this novel. I hope you're ready for a good time, because this book is PACKING!

Heliotrope is a stand alone epic fantasy novel by Palmer Pickering. I would not at all be mad at this author if they decide to make this into a series. I'd devour it, because there is so much going on in this book.

Heliotrope begins with one of the main characters, Teleo. Teleo is a former soldier, but now he's a stone mason. He's doing beautiful work for the queen, but he has no idea that he's about to find himself in the crosshairs of a coup that threatens the entire kingdom. He's older and has suffered much loss with the deaths of his wife and daughter. His son? Stolen away and missing. When he sees a young boy being used and abused by the yardmaster for training, he makes an appeal to take him as his own. Not everyone is pleased, but it lays the groundwork for what is to come later.

The drama takes a minute to begin to build, but when it does things really hit the fan and are off to the races. This book will keep you page-turning and wondering - what is going to happen next?! There will be more characters that come into play and who will further engage you.

Wondering when the title will come into play in the story? You will not have to wait long! It comes pretty quickly which is really surprising! I was like "oh wow! That was fast!" LOL! I loved it though and it absolutely piqued my interest in learning more about them. It's nice to know that Teleo has some knowledge about the heliotropes, and is intent on "caring" for the one he finds. It's really intriguing and something else that will push you to dig deeper into the story.

There is violence and gore in this book, but it's not overdone. Readers who don't mind it will enjoy how it adds to the storyline. If it makes you a bit squeamish, you can always skim those parts, but it's not overly done if that is something you're fearful of.

This book is an absolute must read for fantasy lovers, but just make sure you don't have a lot of plans because when you start this book you're not going to want to put it down. I can't wait to read what comes next from this author.

About the Author

Palmer has been writing fiction since she was eight. She received her BA in American Studies from Wesleyan University, with concentrations in Religion and Race Relations.

She currently works in Silicon Valley in the gaming industry and high tech. In addition, Palmer holds a certificate in Chinese Acupressure, is a certified solar panel installer, and studied Tibetan Buddhism with the 14th Dalai Lama.

She lives and writes in the magical redwood forest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, California.
