A Pursuit of Madness Review Spotlight

A Pursuit of Madness is a standalone fantasy novel that takes Alice in Wonderland and gives it a brand new twist. This isn’t the Alice you remember, so brace yourself for a darker more twisted version that will keep you page-turning.

A Pursuit ofMadness’s cover cues you in on the darkness within its pages with a beautifully dark cover with elegant silver framing that is delicate, but draws the eye. In the center of this book’s cover is a keyhole with roses adorning either side of it. Below that is a beautiful crown with a silver pocket watch sitting in the very center of the crown. The cover doesn’t necessarily scream “Wonderland” but it will pique your interest in what the cover hides inside.

A Pursuit of Madness is the first book in author Amber Bunch’s A Twisted Princess Collection. As stated above, this book is a standalone novel with a nice steamy HEA at the end. Technically Alice isn’t a princess, but don’t think that that means that there aren’t any princesses in this book. There is, but you just need to wait a minute before she makes an appearance.

A Pursuit of Madness gives readers a multiple POV throughout this book. You can expect not two, not three, and definitely not four POV with this book. Nope! You get five! Yes! We’re getting spoiled with the POV in this novel. It will for sure keep you on your toes as the author takes you back and forth between the world we are familiar with, and Wonderland.

There is something interesting in how author Bunch depicts Wonderland. Wonderland mimics a lot of what is already familiar to us. They have cars, their own version of the internet, and other technological advances. What they don’t have though...is freedom. Their Queen keeps them shackled in fear. Magic is outlawed. Outrageous, right?! I mean, seriously! Come on! Is it because the Queen fears someone using magic to usurp her? (Which she totally deserves to happen.) Or is it simply so that she can keep the citizens in fear of her assassins and Jabberwocky?

One thing is for sure when it comes to A Pursuit of Madness you are getting two dynamic factors with this novel – 1) dark (which we absolutely loved) and 2)...steamy. Lots of steamy.

One of the things that we absolutely loved about this book is the level of darkness in Alice’s chapters. She’s a very dark character, but she does certain “dark” things...for good. So, she’s a dark character with the intent and plan to make the world...a better place. So, basically, you gotta love her...or she’ll kill you. LOL! Just kidding!! No, seriously, we promise….we’re kidding. LOL!

Think that Alice is the only dark character in this book? Of course, she’s not! We have the twins – Dom and Dean in Wonderland, though Hatter has some darkness in him, too. But of course, we have the assassin pair, too. Now, they are the ones that you don’t want to cross. The Queen’s assassins who do her bidding of hunting down those who are found doing magic. Merciless killers who more than enjoy what they do. You get to witness one of their hunts, but the hunt plays out quickly. We would have liked a touch more detail since they are so feared. You’d think that they’d play with their “food” more than they do. The good news is that you get some of that detail with Alice when she goes on her own “hunt.”

A Pursuit of Madness really brings the drama and the steamy. You get multiple scenes sprinkled through that will keep you entertained and coming back for more. It is a lot of no-holds-barred steamy that at times will dance the fine line of consent. But let’s be clear...consent is always given, so don’t think that anything is done against anyone’s will. Well, except for Princess Rose when she is made to use her tracking magic on the citizens of her kingdom.

A Pursuit of Madness is part of the Twisted Princess Collection. Yet, the story doesn’t give readers a lot of the princess in this story. It’s an expectation that fails to be met. Which is disappointing. You can call Alice “princess” if you want to, but it’s not truly applicable, because she’s not a princess. It would simply be just giving Alice a nickname and nothing more. We really wanted more of Rose with this story, despite the fact that this is an “Alice in Wonderland” style novel.

A Pursuit of Madness has a lot of drama, but what you also get is a lot of...things going the way for the characters. Are there some “hiccups” that force them to reassess and rethink certain situations? Yes. Could there have been more of them? Again...yes. This book honestly needed more of them. We just wanted more drama and for the characters to really have to fight to reclaim what it is that they are after.

Hoping for an epic battle that sees the Queen taken down? Perhaps an epic fight with the assassins that sees their reign of terror ended? This is a potential spoiler, so...read on at your own risk. This story is lacking in an epic fight between the primary character(s) that have been deemed the bad guy(s). It’s honestly disappointing. Th expectation is there for this big fight to come. Granted, the Queen is not depicted as a fighter, so...then that shifts the expectation to the assassins. It’s a disappointment that none of this pans out after all the hype that the characters do of shouting about “taking down the queen and restoring Wonderland.”

A Pursuit of Madness reads like a standalone novel, and so you can expect a full storyline and a HEA ending with a nice little time gap at the end. When we say “time gap” we mean that you get a little passage of time before the author revisits the characters again and shows where they are now. Get ready for one of the most deliciously steamy moments in the book. Saving the best for last. LOL!

A Pursuit of Madness is a dynamic twist on a classic story, and one thing is for sure and that is author Bunch does this story proud. Alice is a character who draws you in, but she works well together with the other characters to create a fun story that will appeal to your dark side and leave you begging for more with the steamy.

Pros:

  • Engaging story
  • Deliciously dark elements
  • Steamy scenes
  • Twisted characters

Cons:

  • No epic fight between the main bad guys of the story
  • Wanted more drama

Dragon Blood Review Spotlight

To celebrate the upcoming release of Dragon King, we're going back to the start. If you haven't read Dragon Blood yet, we really think you should!

Dragon Blood is the start of Jane Apatova’s Insatiable Desires series. Yes, we know it says “book two” which, technically it is, but this book is the real jump-off point. So, fellow readers, haven’t read book one? It’s okay. This the beginning while book one is the prequel. But if you wish to read from the beginning beginning...please feel free to do so. We’re sure you’ll enjoy getting the full immersive picture.

Dragon Blood reaches out to readers with a green dragon scale background with a sword situated in the middle of the cover. Doesn’t look like much does it? But is it enough to grab your attention and pique your interest in discovering the story tucked away inside? Well, that will be up to you, dear reader. For most, it might not be due to it’s non-flashy cover, but you know what they say...”Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.”

Dragon Blood is no exception to the rule. While the cover may be unassuming, it hides a rather intriguing novel. Author Apatova promises readers a story with dragons, slow-burn romance, secrets, a brewing war, magic, and so much more. What we also get is age-gap romance. Most tend to think...early to mid twenties for the FMC and maybe late 30s to mid-40s to early 50s. Well...let’s just get this out of the way...the girls? They’re barely of age...17 about to turn 18 and the other is 18. And yes, they’re virgins, too. This won’t be everyone’s favorite tropes to delve into, but if you can move past that...you’ll find a rather intriguing novel.

The first part of the story is rather uneventful. Author Apatova introduces readers to Prince Alister and High King Gareth. Two individuals of dragon blood, they are seeking a better and brighter future for their people. But first thing, author Apatova does is introduce readers to a story surrounding the creation of this unique world. It’s a fascinating story being revisited with a small boy who will one day be king. You get an introduction to the dragons that helped create this unique world.

As the story shifts forward you are put into the characters present day. The story shifts frequently between High King Gareth and his brother Alister. Alister is smitten with a young woman that he met over a year ago. He’s keeping this a secret, for the time being, from Gareth. You’ll understand the reasoning behind, because honestly, there is a particular way that things are done with these kingdoms.

Alister, for some, will probably come off as the more likeable of the two brothers. LOL! Though, just prepare for him to be the possessive one of the two. He’s found the one who calls to him, and she is all that he wants. Regardless of how much teasing Gareth may decide to lavish upon him. Gareth on the other hand, appears to be the exact opposite. Gareth was married for a time, but his wife...is no longer of this world. He has mourned, but he also holds some resentment towards the events that led up to it all. So, for the time being, Gareth is a bit of a...womanizer.

As we stated above, Dragon Blood has a rather slow and uneventful beginning. We eventually get to meet two young ladies who are going to be pivotal to the two men of the story. You’re going to be looking for signs of trouble to crop up though. While there isn’t any “relationship” or romance drama that threatens a potential romantic rival you get to watch the dynamics unfold between the characters.

Once the story hits...around the 30% point...that’s when things start to get interesting. The drama really begins to amp up when a situation arises with the girl that Alister has found love with. It would seem that there is someone in the kingdom who is unhappy with how things are. Who knew? LOL!

Cue the dragons!! Okay, okay, there are wyverns, smaller dragons, too. We quite literally squealed with excitement at the interactions with the wyverns. They just sound so adorable and cute. Cue wanting to cuddle one. LOL! But the dragons finally make an appearance and it is some epic excitement when they do. They come in gorgeous colors, are vicious fighters, and are just truly amazing.

The romance is slow-burn. Alister is fanning the flames of his, but Gareth...well, Gareth is trying to smother his. They both have fated mates, but while Alister is keen on embracing his Gareth is bent on not embracing his. As you read about his reasoning, it’s a mixed bag of making sense. You’ll understand it on the one hand, and then view him as a fool on the other. But hey, he’s a “playboy”...always has been, and it’s going to take an exceptional woman to change that. Challenge...accepted, says Fate. LOL!

Dragon Blood has a lot going for it, and once the story grips you, it’s going to keep you coming back for more. Hate cliffhangers? Well, that’s just too bad, because it’s going to have one. Is it a major cliffhanger that’s going to leave you raging? Eh, not really, but it will leave you...along with a couple other characters...with lots of questions and eager for answers.

One thing is for sure...we can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book.

Pros:

  • Steamy scenes
  • Slow-burn romance
  • Engaging storyline
  • Drama
  • Dragons

Cons:

  • Slow start that borders on a touch tedious, at times, to get through.

Necrosis Review Spotlight

The apocalypse has come. Not just your life is on the line, but the life of your 9 year old daughter. What are you going to do? What will you do to survive and keep your child safe? When every breath could be your last, in this world where the dead walk...Amy is in for the fight of her life. Literally.

Necrosis is a dark post-apocalypse horror novel that right from the beginning drops you right into the mayhem and chaos of Amy fighting for her life. She's already lost one person - her boyfriend of ten months. One wrong move, one mis-step and that was it. Distraction cost him, and her hesitation? Well, it didn't help. But...what can you do in the face of seeing someone you once loved...seeing that they are one of the undead?

You'd think...the simple answer...don't hesitate. That person you once knew? They're gone. They are no more and they are seconds away from ripping your face off and eating you alive. Yet, Amy hesitates. Not the smartest move, especially when you have your child right next to you. Literally. Where will things go from here? One word...south.

One thing that shines out of Necrosis is the fact that despite all of the upheaval in the world that these characters are struggling through, they still try to maintain some sense of normalcy where they can. But it never lasts long. There are some sparks of romance, a moment of reconnection and dreams of a better future, but even those don't last long. It's mildly heartbreaking. We say mildly simply because...when chaos reigns...nothing lasts forever.

This book ends with a twist that, on a level...you'll see coming, but you'll still cling to the hope that maybe...just maybe things will work out. But...not every book is going to have a happy ending, and Necrosis is one of them. No matter how you slice it...you're going to be glued to this book. So go ahead and settle in for the wild ride that is coming your way.

Pros:

  • Drama packed
  • Horror filled
  • Page-turner
  • Twisted ending

Cons:

Necrosis Excerpt

Raspy sounds of hunger pushed from her rotted throat, washing over me with the smell of old blood and things long dead. I didn’t understand how breath still rattled in her lungs. How her vocal cords, exposed and moldy, were still capable of producing noise—a terrible wet, scraping that was so far from human. So far from her.

My mother had a sweet voice in life. Melodic. Powerful, when she wanted it to be. Her songs were one of my sharpest memories as a child. They were the soundtrack of my youth. Everyone used to say, “Bridgette could have made it big.” If she didn’t have four kids, two jobs, and a husband who cared more for drinking than working. Now she’ll never sing again.

For some reason, the thought struck me harder than the look of her gray, decomposing flesh and patchy hair; sporadic clumps of white strands, matted and darkened with bloody tissue.

Beside me, my daughter screamed, with all the gusto of a nine-year-old whose world had fallen apart. Her gaze darted from the horror inching toward us in the dining room to the real-time carnage of my boyfriend’s death happening in the kitchen, and she screamed louder.

I put a hand over her mouth, silencing the high-pitched dinner bell before it carried into the street and brought more of the undead in through the busted front door. “Shhh, Lila, please,” I whispered. “You know better.”

She nodded, tears streaming, and I removed my hand. Her shoulders shrugged in a fast, heavy breath. “Grandma…” It was all she could get out before burying her face in my leg.

I peeled Lila off me and shoved her toward the bathroom. “In there. Lock the door. Don’t open it for anyone but me. Go!”

Lila hurried off, messy, brown ponytail bouncing, as her short legs carried her down the hall and into the bathroom. The door closed. Locked. I imagined her hiding in the bathtub, curled up in a ball, clutching the dirty ladybug covered backpack she hadn’t put down since we left home. I raised the tire iron in my grip and vowed, as I had a hundred times, to do whatever was necessary to protect her. Lila was the only good thing I’d ever done in my life.

We shouldn’t have brought her here, I thought, watching my mother’s bloated jaw, snapping involuntarily, searching for a meal. My stare darted to the body in the kitchen, blood-soaked and twitching, as the mindless fiends bent over my boyfriend, devouring him alive.

It’s too much.

It's all too much. No child should have to see what we’ve all become.

We should have gone to the country like Rusty wanted. There’s too many in the city. Coming home was a mistake.

The outbreak was too widespread for an old, wheelchair dependent woman with a bad hip to survive on her own. If I’d gotten here sooner…. But there were too many states between us, and with the roads clogged and gas scarce and wandering bands of the undead everywhere, the trip became painfully long. My mother couldn’t run, couldn’t fight. But I let wishes override common sense, and convinced myself she’d be here, barricaded in, alive and well. Maybe, with Mr. and Mrs. Hitchens next door. Or the Walker family on the corner. It was a close-knit neighborhood. Everyone looked after each other. Particularly her, after my father left.

Yet, in my heart I knew better.

I knew I’d find her stricken with the virus, holed up in the dusty rooms of the ramshackle house I grew up in. I knew what she’d look like, flesh disintegrating and mind gone. I knew what I’d have to do. I’d seen, and killed, enough of the ravaged these last four months to be prepared.

Except, I wasn’t.

Her sallow, blood-stained eyes (once a soft brown) locked on me, not with the love of a mother, but with the malice of a starving predator. Her bloated fingers, tips torn down to the nailbed, dug into the floor as she crawled toward me. She wouldn’t stop unless I stopped her.

Dirty Spirits Review Spotlight

"The Fall of the House of Usher meets Evil Dead 2. Experience an offbeat occult ghost story from the twisted mind of Sawney Hatton." With that...welcome to the book tour for Dirty Spirits by Sawney Halton in association with Black Tide Book Tours.

Looking for a twisted paranormal packed horror story? Well, here’s some good news...Sawney Hatton has a book that will draw you in and have you page-turning to find out how it all ends. Dirty Spirits is a book that is not to be missed for fans of novels that are twisted and more than a little bit of horrific.

Dirty Spirits is a standalone horror novel with paranormal elements written by Sawney Hatton. This author moves to draw readers in with a cover that really makes you stop and take a second look. What do you see? What makes you pause and do a double take? The sight of a head coming out of a woman’s torso? The fact that she’s holding a bottle of whiskey and pouring it into his mouth? Or is it the cut that mars her flesh and where the head appears to be erupting from? Regardless of what makes you pause, it’ll be enough to tempt you to pick this book up and see where the storyline leads you.

Dirty Spirits is a story that is heavily focused on drug addiction and alcoholism. Two of the characters – Liam and Michelle, have struggled for years with these two particular substance abuse demons. It destroyed their careers and relationships with other people. But one day, push came to shove and Michelle made a decision for herself. But at what cost?

Dirty Spirits starts off by depicting a news story about an ancestor of Liam’s who passed away by fire on his ship. He was called a “professed necromancer.” Typically that means that people feared him and would have eventually taken steps to see his demise. This is just the beginning of this story, and promises much more to come.

Author Hatton paints a story where Michelle breaks away from her toxic relationship with Liam. Things weren’t always bad, but one day...things escalated from bad to worse and things just kept going downhill. Ultimately, if she hadn’t made a choice, she would have inevitably followed him down a very dark path. But because she chose differently, her path took a different course than Liam’s.

Dirty Spirits runs the race of happening in “present” time for the main line of the story. But author Hatton also takes time to send readers back in time to when Liam and Michelle met and how their lives intermingled. Author Hatton shows readers that Michelle and Liam met at rehab. They both got clean together, they established a romance, and things looked good. But then it begs the question...what happened? Where did things go wrong? Well, hold on to your butts because that particular element? It’s coming. Boy is it coming! Prepare for some seriously interesting elements that even YOU, the reader, won’t see coming. Who would?! Honestly...only author Hatton, and that makes this a delicious twisted element to behold.

Michelle is a troubled soul. That much is apparent, but you get to see that she has people who care about her – Doug, and her father are two such characters. Yes, Liam loved her, but in his own way. You’ll see that Liam, after a particular scene in this book, became Michelle’s enabler. He encouraged and pushed her to surrender to the vices that originally plagued them both and ultimately led to his untimely death.

But while Liam may be dead...that doesn’t mean that he’s gone. Nooo...Liam still lingers, and he has no intent to let Michelle go. In his mind, she belongs to him, and he means to have her. Do her feelings matter? Not a bit. Liam and his family have plans put in place and they are determined to make sure that Michelle helps them fulfill each and every one of them regardless of her feelings. These people will manipulate her any way they can to make sure that Liam has her...even in the afterlife.

Dirty Spirits has a slightly rocky beginning of where it seems like the story is trying to find it’s footing. The story shifts back and forth in the narrative from being present day to the past at random moments. Once you gain your footing with this story, it’s going to engage you and pull you to delve deeper. You’ll be compelled to learn more about Michelle’s and Liam’s toxic relationship. You’ll see how it evolves and ultimately devolves. Hate to say it, but you can thank Liam’s parents. Yeah, we said what we said – sorry not sorry. LOL!

One thing that can be safely said about Dirty Spirits is that there are going to be a lot of elements and scenes that you’re simply not going to see coming. Author Hatton is going to make sure you keep coming back for more when it comes to this book. You’re going to want to know what happens next. What is going to happen to Doug? What is going to happen to Michelle? Are either one of them going to survive the drama, the danger and ultimately the fall out of what takes place in this book? You’re going to want to know – does the image on the cover become depicted in the story itself? Want a spoiler? Well, whether you do or not...we’re not giving you one. LOL! Not this time anyways.

As stated in the trigger warnings there is a lot of focus on alcoholism in this book. It is a primary point of the storyline and isn’t overdone. Author Hatton creates characters who are struggling with real issues and their struggles make them seem all the more realistic. Is there sex in this book? Yes, there is. Technically it can be classified as R-rated, but it’s far from being graphic in anyway. There aren’t heavy details, it’s just enough for you to know that either characters are having sex or there is something sexual in nature taking place.

As a standalone novel, Dirty Spirits has an interesting ending. The final chapters work to ramp up the drama and take the story in an unexpected direction. Author Hatton takes two particular characters and lets them have some unexpected breakout moments that lend them toward the light of...dare we say...hero? Shocking, right? But it’s definitely unexpected and does the job of keeping you on your toes.

Dirty Spirits is an interesting novel that will grip you and intrigue you to the very end.

Pros:

  • Gripping storyline
  • Realistic characters
  • Twists
  • Page-turner
  • Nice amount of horror

Cons:

  • Rocky beginning

5 out of 5 stars

Thank you to the author, Sawney Hatton, and Black Tide Book Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book. We look forward to what comes next!

Dirty Spirits

by Sawney Hatton

The Fall of the House of Usher meets Evil Dead 2. Experience an offbeat occult ghost story from the twisted mind of Sawney Hatton.

They say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, and Doug believed it.

He didn’t expect to fall in love with an addict. Once he did, he knew the relationship would be challenging. He knew sometimes it would blow chunks and rain shit. He expected it. He prepared for it. But there are some things you can never imagine happening, crazy stuff you can never prepare for no matter how hard you try. All Doug can do now is hang on and hope the love of his life isn’t dragged back into hell by her ex-fiancé who can’t move on.

Because while Liam Fowlington may be dead… he’s far from departed.

Trigger warnings:
Drug & alcohol addiction plays a large part in the story. R-rated sex and violence.

About the Author

Sawney Hatton is an author, editor, and screenwriter who has long loved taking trips to the dark side.

Weaned on a steady diet of paranormal horror and creature features, he quickly developed an appetite for all things macabre and monstrous. With early literary influences as tonally disparate as Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, Evelyn Waugh’s The Loved One, and Marquis de Sade’s The 120 Days of Sodom, he enjoys fusing the sinister with the satirical, the abominable with the absurd.

Other incarnations (reincarnations?) of Sawney have produced marketing videos, attended all-night film fests, and played the banjo and sousaphone (not at the same time).

As of this writing he is still very much alive.

Once We Were Witches – short excerpt

Chapter 1

A breaking news alert flashed on the TV screen as I bit into my bagel.

As the reporter stood by, the camera panned over to the lifeless body of a young woman hanging from a tree branch. “Witch” was carved into her gray, blood-stained forehead. He sighed and hung his head. “A seventh victim has been added to the list.”

I shoved my bagel aside as a sick feeling gripped my stomach. My heart ached as I stared at the girl’s lifeless face. How could someone be so cruel and sadistic? This was not just a random act of cruelty. And where were the police in all of this?

My mom walked in, grabbed the remote, and shut off the TV.

I was watching that.”

There’s no need to watch some sicko murder young women. Life’s too short to fixate on people like that.”

I’m not fixated,” I clarified. “I’m concerned. There’s a difference. That’s seven girls now. Each with the word ‘witch’ carved into their foreheads. What are the police doing? Nothing?”

She blew me off. “Investigations take time. The police are doing everything they can. Your dad and I see a lot of accidents at the hospital. Sadly, crime is a real thing. But you,” she kissed my forehead, “don’t need to worry about that. Your focus should be on college and the class you need to get to.”

Mom was wrong. I had to worry. The creep pursued young women, specifically witches, a trait I shared and kept to myself. While my parents were blue-eyed and blonde-haired, I had pitch-black hair and brown eyes, and I also had strange birthmarks covering my forearms. It might seem like I have a tragic story, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe I was destined to be abandoned outside the hospital where my adoptive parents worked. As they headed home after a long shift, they heard a faint cry near the emergency entrance. Rushing to investigate, they found me abandoned on the front steps, bundled in a pink blanket. As fate would have it, they immediately took me in and showered me with love.

As a baby, a toddler, a teen, and now at 19, a college student, they never saw me as anything but sweet, curious, sulky, and smart. They had no idea what I was hiding, the power I perfected, the spells I practiced, the magic I shed. In their eyes, I was like them. I knew I was someone beyond their comprehension, someone powerful. But who was I? Who were my birth parents who should have taught me how to use the gifts given to me at birth? The only information I had about my past came from visions—an image of a dark figure dropping me outside the hospital. There were no records of my birth, my parents, a location—as if I never existed. Bringing my questions to my adoptive parents wouldn’t do any good. They’d kept these secrets hidden from me. In spite of me knowing the real truth, my adoptive parents provided a birth certificate, giving me the name, Raven Sagestone. I love them, but I want answers. I wanted to know the truth, and it was clear it wouldn’t come from them. This was something I had to figure out for myself.

I put on my cropped denim jacket, kissed my mom on the cheek, and hit up Uber on my cell. My driver’s tests were a total disaster. I failed every time. It creeped me out when the instructors stared at me with their beady eyes. So…my driver’s license was out, and Uber was in. Having someone else do all the driving was a much better plan, for now anyway.

Forty minutes before class, the Uber driver dropped me off in front of the massive steps leading up to entrance of Granite Bay University. It was one of the oldest schools in Jodence, like something straight out of a fairytale. Its structure was reminiscent of a castle, with its towering columns, decorative arched windows, and cone-shaped roof; yet modern-day people dressed in jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers surrounded the ancient building—me being one of them.

In the past fourteen weeks, my daily agenda had consisted of visiting the library before class and researching its extensive collection of witchcraft, magic, and supernatural books. One of those books was certain to contain the answers to my birthright. I absorbed every word I came across about soul-bending, mental conjuring, healing rituals, protection rituals, binding magic, and the lore of fire, water, and air. One of the most fascinating things I discovered was the witch’s mark. It has likely been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, between the 15th and 18th centuries, it had a much darker history than it does now. Witches were often burned, hanged, drowned, and tortured, and those with red hair and extra fingers and toes were often suspected of witchcraft. Witch hunters used moles, birthmarks, scars, and extra digits to identify witches. It was a myth that a particular god or bloodline was associated with the presence of a mole cluster or rose-colored mark. My arms were covered in black symbols like ancient ink, and neither a cluster nor a mark applied to me. Thank goodness I wasn’t born back then.

With my arms full of books, I walked beneath the library’s massive brick archways, combing its numerous aisles for books I hadn’t read. When I rounded the corner, I tripped over a guy sitting on the floor. My books flew through the air and landed with a thud. I groaned as I hit the ground, hoping I had not damaged my books. The guy on the floor, on the other hand, quickly sprang up and apologized profusely.

His hands steadied me as he blurted, “Whoa, sorry.” He helped me gather my books and ensured I was okay. An adorable smile swept along his lips as he brushed sandy-brown hair out of his hazel-colored eyes. He was probably one of those guys unaware of how cute he was, but cute or not, he’d parked his ass in the middle of the aisle, causing me to trip.

What the hell, dude? There are tables to sit at and read.”

Yeah, I see your point,” he grinned, revealing dimpled cheeks as he flipped through the books. “So you’re into witches? Or maybe it’s research for a paper about what’s going now right now?”

Does it matter?”

He squished his eyebrows together and tilted his head to the side. “Do you know my sister?”

Huh?”

Never mind.” He tucked the books under his arm and bobbed his chin toward the tables. “Here, let me help you. It’s the least I can do.”

With a smile, I accepted his offer. “Thank you.”

He arranged the books on the table before shoving his hands into his pockets. Then he stood there, studying me.

Stare much?”

Has anyone told you, you’re difficult?” He didn’t wait for me to respond. “But hey, I apologize for staring.” He spread his fingers and moved them in a circular motion over my face. “You remind me of someone, Eve. She’s got the same dark hair, ivory skin, and red lip look.”

I shrugged. “I don’t know anyone named Eve.”

Hmph.”

The sound of a distant scream sent chills down my spine. My eyes darted around, searching for the source. “Did you hear that?”

That was definitely a scream.”

Students leapt from their seats, hurling books onto the floor as their gazes swept the room. Librarians abandoned their posts and spilled into the aisles. Panicked voices shouted, “Who screamed?” “What happened?” Me and the guy were thrown into madness by a stampede of people charging to the exits and pushing us out of the building and onto the library’s steps.

The echo of my thumping heart filled my ears as I tried to figure out what was happening around me. The once orderly campus had become a chaotic mess as hundreds of people rushed by, pushing and shoving, their faces filled with panic. As I fought my way through the crowd, I couldn’t help but wonder where everyone was going and what had happened to cause such chaos.

There!” the guy pointed toward the sculpture of the university’s tower in the courtyard.

I gasped as my eyes landed on the bodies. Three girls hung from the white tower with their necks bound together, now covered in blood. As I looked at their lifeless eyes and saw the word “witch” carved across their foreheads, a chill ran down my spine. An eerie, tragic, and horrific scene surrounded the stained white tower. As students and teachers huddled together, whispering in disbelief, a shrill of sirens echoed in the distance, intensifying panic and fear. Police authorities were under pressure to find those responsible for these horrific acts.

Damn, three this time,” he uttered with shock.

I couldn’t speak. My throat swelled with a huge sob as I slowly shook my head.

The police rushed in, their footsteps pounding the sidewalk as they raced toward the tower. Their faces were determined as they cautiously approached the cordoned-off area. They quickly pulled out their clipboards and meticulously documented the evidence, taking photographs of the area.

An officer, wearing an exasperated expression, yelled. “Get back! This is a crime scene.”

I flinched, staggered backward, before firmly planting my feet on the ground. I wasn’t going anywhere. This was my battle. I needed answers. Those poor girls needed answers too. My eyes grew wide as I demanded, “Why don’t you find this sick creep before we all die?”

The guy’s gaze burned into my flesh as he snapped his head toward me. “What are you doing?”

The officer thrust his shoulders back and barked out, “You need to step back.”

Are you trying to get arrested?” the guy whispered in my ear.

Just as his words entered my head, I overheard someone say, “They’re ice cold; not a drop of blood in them.”

My eyes locked on the authoritative policeman. “Blood? Is that new? Were the other girls drained of blood too?”

A pair of squinted eyes glared at me. “You can retreat or go downtown and think about your actions in a jail cell.”

Omgeez, man up much?” the guy said as he grabbed my arm and hurried me away. “You need to calm down.”

I tore my gaze away from the dead girls and locked it on him. “Don’t tell me what to do. You don’t know anything about me. I want answers for those girls.” And myself, I privately declared. “It seems nobody is fighting for them.”

It might seem that way on the surface, but I’m sure they’re doing everything they can to help.”

I wish I could believe that, but dead bodies keep showing up…” My voice cracked as the sob squeezing my throat broke free. My shoulders quivered, and I buried my face in my hands.

He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and softened his voice. “They’ll catch ’em. It’ll be okay.”

Sniffling, I sighed, “I can’t concentrate. I can’t be in class.”

We can walk to The Grind, get a coffee, and just relax.”

I nodded and then hung my head as he led me away from the gruesome scene of dead girls.

Bound by Blood continues Beth’s and Philippe’s story. In book one, readers got to watch Beth and Philippe lead a whirlwind romance and Beth go from being a human to a vampire. Secrets were revealed, and Beth’s true love was revealed – Amon, the being of mist who visited her frequently and whom she gave her heart to. The problem? Well, Beth believed the lies that Philippe lead her to believe, and so she married him. But Amon is who she truly cares for. Book one, Immortal Kiss, ended with Amon being tricked, and Philippe left to deal with Beth as she mourned his loss.

Bound by Blood’s cover showcases a young woman with blond hair holding a goblet and her hands are dripping with blood. It’s a scene that will feel familiar as a similar scene played out in book one. Is this image a prediction of what is to come in this story as well? Well, only time will tell.

Bound by Blood picks up where book one, Immortal Kiss, left off. Amon has been “taken” from Beth and she mourns his loss. This has created quite a lot of tension between Beth and Philippe. Beth is struggling and Philippe resents her ultimately for it. In his mind? She should be thrilled that Amon has been out of the picture for this past few years. Meanwhile, on the anniversary of the loss, Beth gets ridiculously drunk.

Beth has been a vampire for five years, and this story will, overall, showcase some maturity compared to book one. We get to see Beth struggle with her binding to Amon, but knowing that he is off, against his will, with another. You’d honestly think that since Philippe agreed to share her that he’d be more considerate of her feelings.

Instead, the author routinely has Beth feeling bad for having an emotional attachment to Amon. She frequently feels guilt for caring about Amon and not putting Philippe first. Yes, they are married, but in the vampire world, that holds little to no weight in their eyes. Yet, you have Philippe routinely being a jerk in one form or another. It’s a touch bizarre. But then again it goes to the point that with Amon’s appearance in book one, Philippe now has no reason to continue to wear the mask of deception he used to lure Beth to love him.

Readers are definitely going to get another side of Philippe in this book. He’s far from the sweet “Mr. Perfect” guy that he showed to Beth. Instead, there is a darker side to him that comes out quite frequently. Author Daleo writes Philippe as routinely either playing victim in an attempt to manipulate Beth, or simply looking to control her to keep her away from Amon. You’d think that Beth would try to stand up for herself when it comes to Philippe’s attempts at controlling her. Yeah, that’s a no. Which is disappointing.

Does Beth show some backbone in Bound by Blood? Yes, there are a couple of moments, but we wanted and needed more. She wants to seem like a fierce and fiery character, but when a situation truly calls for her to show that backbone...she wilts. Honestly, we got tired of her basically catering to Philippe so much. How often does he cater to her? It’s few and far between for the amount of back bending that she does for him in an attempt to spare his feelings.

There is a lot of transitioning in this book. Beth and Amon finally come together, but the way that things play out between Beth and Philippe is a touch of a head scratcher. It doesn’t really make sense. She does nothing to merit the emotional trauma that he puts her through. It’s simply about his bruised ego and so he does what he can to hurt her the most.

Author Daleo writes Beth as an overly forgiving character. When we say overly forgiving we mean exactly that. If someone can cheat on you, and you managed to flip it all around and say that it was your fault for them having a temper tantrum and hooking up with the first piece of tail they could grab...yeah, you’re over thinking it. The same when someone learns you don’t want to be in a relationship with you, and they decide to go join a group of homicidal maniacs.

Beth is made to shoulder too much of the blame and believe that everything is her fault. We don’t know if the intent is to make her look like a truly “caring” or make her look overly forgiving. Either way, it makes her look too soft. We wanted more from Beth, and it just fails to deliver. Author Daleo focuses heavily on Beth “maintaining” her “humanity.” But it just feels like it gets overly done and detracts from her development as a character.

When it comes to the overall storyline, we have to admit that book two was leaps and bounds better than book one. While book one had some good elements, Bound by Blood exceeds it by really captivating the reader into plunging through this book to learn whether Beth and Amon are reunited, and what exactly will be the fall out for all the swirling relationship drama and much more.

The ending of this book appears to give the characters a HEA moment, so it’s safe to say that this will be the conclusion of Beth’s and Amon’s story. It’s an okay ending with basically all the loose ends being tied up rather neatly and leaving most of the characters to pursue their paths as they see fit.

Pros:

  • Storyline is engaging
  •  Twists
  •  Interesting elements
  •  Nicely paced
  •  Good character development overall

Cons:

  •  FMC still clings to her naivety
  •  FMC is made to shoulder too much blame and responsibility for other’s actions and choices.
