A Study in Survival Review Spotlight

Welcome the book tour for the second installment in the Endymion College trilogy, A Study in Survival by W.H. Lockwood!

Are you ready to return to Lockwood's world? Are you ready for more drama and "adventure" with Anna and her friends? More paranormal spirits and danger that lurks seen and unseen? Then enjoy your return to Endymion, because much awaits you there.

It's a new term, so things should be better right? New friends, new work to be done, but old dangers should be well behind as they push forward with their lives. Well, it would seem that things are going to not be that easy. But, where would the fun be in that? Just when you start to relax...yeah, that's when things are going to pounce...and not in a fun, sexy way. LOL!

Anna is back at Endymion and she's been through a lot, but it would seem that the paranormal isn't done with her yet. Her or her friends, because more trouble is lurking in the shadows. However, it's not just the paranormal/supernatural this time, it would seem that a new character has come to wreck some havoc, too.

Things have both changed and stayed the same from book one. Where Eve refused to give in to temptation at first, he has embraced wholeheartedly, but it seems he will never be without his slew of female admirers. LOL! Control that jealousy, Anna.

This book is packed with a lot of drama, some romance, friendship, and of course, a nice dose of humor. These characters will keep you engaged in the story and page-turning to find out what is going to happen next. Anna and Candi seem to have a better relationship/friendship, which is good. It's nice to see some romance blooming and secrets that shouldn't be aren't.

I love the mystery of the apartment and how it continues to be the theme of the story. It really brings a nice haunting element to the story and for sure keeps the characters on their toes. This book is just as much of a page-turner as book one. If you enjoyed book one, then you are absolutely going to enjoy book two.

I know that you're going to enjoy book two more because it really sounds like the author has really hit her stride with this book as it flows better than book one. I'm really looking forward to the third book in this series. You just know that there is going to be something darker waiting for them come next time.

I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.

About the Author

W.H. Lockwood writes feminist gothic and historical fiction, dark academia and cosy horror, all with a romantic twist.

Raised on a diet of Point books and Pepsi, only willing to leave her den to attend chess club at public school, W.H. Lockwood started writing at a young age and has kept this passion throughout her life.

Always a voracious reader, she obtained an undergraduate degree in literary studies from a gorgeous sandstone university, following that with a master’s degree in publishing and editing, then another master’s degree in astronomy, thus uniting her two great loves of the arts and science, leaving her utterly unqualified to cope with the real world.

Welcome to the book tour for Pulse by B.A. Bellec! Read on for exclusive music and book details!

Pulse is that twisted horror novel that gradually builds, but keeps you page-turning to find out what is going to happen next. Set in the not-too-distant future, this book focuses on a litany of various subjects from climate change to politics. Pulse shows the dangers of a company having extensive power, but don't forget the monster in the woods! It's out there...lurking...and it's hungry.

Pulse is one of those books that after you've read the first chapter, your hair is going to be trying to stand up on end. LOL! I know mine was. I absolutely loved how twisted the first chapter was, and it immediately made me want to dig deeper into the story and find out what was going to happen next. I just needed a clearer picture of this creature in the woods. I kept wondering...is this a science experiment gone wrong? An animal that was once in a lab that escaped? What is it and where did it come from?

Pulse gives you multiple POVs throughout this story. You get repeat characters, obviously, and then you get some who only last the chapter. I loved the twisted nature of this story and the author's imagination.

The author goes back and forth in time throughout this book. You go back years in time, and sometimes you just go a few days, weeks or months back in time. The author lays out just who and what "Pulse" the company is. I'm sure that my jaw ended up on the floor multiple times reading this book. One particular scene that comes to mind was the courtroom scene with Natalie. My heart broke for what she and her sister went through. However, the author showcases the manipulation of the court system...well done.

The twists and turns throughout this book keep you on your toes. There are a lot of subjects touched in this book, so the horror gets a little lost, but I still enjoyed this book and I am absolutely looking forward to the next book in this series. Oh, did I forget to mention this is a series? LOL! Cuz it is! Lots to look forward to!

I'm rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Come One, Come All Review Spotlight

What is it about circuses that gives most of us chills? Read on about brand-new horror novel, Come One, Come All by E. Gilliland!

Come One, Come All is a thrilling horror novel by E. Gilliland that will sweep you away into its pages before you even know it.

Come One, Come All starts off in a way that has you immediately curious. Why was Louisa locked up? What is her plan now that she's out? Where is she going and what is she going to do? Louisa as the main character absolutely piques your interest and keeps you page-turning to find out what is going to happen next with her.

Come One, Come All really has some interesting paranormal elements to it. Louisa has some unique ability that makes people fear her when they realize what she is capable of doing. But when she joins this circus, it appears that she's not the only one with these abilities. When she meets ringmaster Amos Cain, you just know that things are about to get interesting. There is just something about him.

Be careful though, because as you go deeper you're going to learn that there is something truly dark about this man...and he's truly dangerous. He's hoping to get Louisa in his clutches and should he manage to do so...he won't be letting go.

I really enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end. The minute I picked up this book it was so hard to put it down. Everytime I had to go do something I regretted having to put this book down. It whispered to me concerning the characters. It teased me from afar by making me constantly think about the characters and wondering what was going to happen next.

Come One, Come All is packed with twists, turns, surprises and so much more. I ate this book up. The ending though...the ending has me just about pleading for more. The ending is darkly delicious and I'm hoping that the author will be writing more of this characters and what happens next, because I just know that there has to be more. LOL! Wishful thinking? Maybe, but a girl can hope. Right?

This book is a must read for those who love gothic horror novels with a touch of the paranormal/supernatural thrown in. Be sure you have a clear schedule when you pick this book up because once you start reading, you're not going to want to put it down. This is one book you're going to want to indulge in for Halloween. I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Louisa had thought the Pied Piper Carnival looked surreal in the scant photographic evidence she’d managed to piece together in her search, but if anything, it was even more bizarrely gaudy in person, tinged with the smell of desperation. Look at me! the freaks and contortionists all but shouted from their faded, patched tents; and from the pretty girls with their barely there costumes fraying at the seams, Love us!; and underneath it all, a whisper so faint it could barely be noticed under the glitz of the peeling-painted signs and the shriek of the dissonant, jarring music: Come.

And people did. In droves, they answered the call of the traveling show, stumbling up to it as if they scarcely understood why they were there, but drawn all the same. Embarrassed, at first, but lured in by those too-bright lights.

At least all of her fears about sticking out like a sore thumb had been in vain. No one here seemed inclined to gawp at any of their fellow voyeurs—not even those, like she, with hair shorn so close to the scalp that bits of skin poked through. It had been an impulsive decision made once the adrenaline from nearly jumping off the roof had worn off and she’d decided, for better or worse, to come on this bizarre journey she could not quite explain, even to herself—that was, if there’d been anyone left to explain it to.

The owl made me do it, she thought wryly to herself, running a self-conscious hand over her freshly buzzed hair. The tinsel dress had been replaced with a flannel shirt two sizes too big, jean shorts, and a sensible, sturdy pair of boots so heavy that if the moon drifted off and took all the gravity with it, there she’d be, still rooted to the earth. The only concession to any kind of glamor was the heavily-coaled eyelids that were not so much an invitation as a warning. Come too close, and I’ll bite.

Despite the rather strange figure she cut, people were too caught up in the shoddy showmanship around them to notice or care. Something about the flashing lights and blaring music distracted them from the blatant disrepair: the signs hanging off their hinges, the pockmarks plastered over with pancake makeup. Simple minds, and all. Still, scoff all she liked, Louisa had to stop herself more than once from leaning in toward a shiny bauble or taking an outstretched palm.

“Pretty lady looking for a good time with a handsome fellow?” one of the popcorn vendors leered at her as she passed, scratching at the dark tendrils of hair protruding through his unbuttoned shirt.

Louisa knew she shouldn’t, but she couldn’t help herself, truly. “Yeah.” She took in a step closer, all big-eyed innocence. “You know any?”

At once the grin dissolved to a gleaming snarl. “Think you’re funny, huh? I’d watch my back if I were you.”

But Louisa only smirked to herself as she drifted back into the faceless crowd. Just try it, she dared him silently. We’ll see who walks away from it smiling.

“Happy hunting.”

She swiveled to see a woman sitting in a tassled, red velvet-upholstered booth, the hand-painted sign overhead reading ‘Madame Kassandra, Soothsayer.’ Underneath it sat a woman so ancient her skin had begun to shrink in on itself. Her eyes were a milky, unblinking white, her hair a platinum bob cut just below her chin. She stared straight ahead, not seeming to see anything, though Louisa could not shake the feeling that the old crone was looking straight through her.

Curiosity finally winning out, Louisa ventured another step closer. “You talking to me?”

Madame Kassandra beckoned her even closer with the crook of a gnarled, veined finger. Once Louisa was directly in front of her, she cupped a hand over her mouth, giving a hot, exaggerated whisper. “I know what you’re looking for.”

Oh, this ought to be good. “Do you, now?”

“Three.”

Despite herself, Louisa felt a chill course down her spine. But that was the way these shoddy carnival tellers worked, wasn’t it? Trail little breadcrumbs of generalities mixed with a healthy helping of bullshit, make people believe you could peer into their souls.

“Three what?” she bluffed as if the number meant nothing to her, though she caught herself holding her breath as she waited for the answer.

“One for each of the ones you took.” Madame Kassandra’s small, withered hand was surprisingly strong as it encircled her wrist. “But you should have kept running, Lovely Louie. This place is gonna gobble you up.”

Arianne the Mistress Review Spotlight

Check out the exciting next installment in The Legends of Everclearing series by Wendy L. Anderson, Arianne the Mistress!

Arianne the Mistress is the second book in Wendy L. Anderson's The Legends of Everclearing series. Each book in this series focuses on a different character and can be read as a stand-alone novel. For those who have read the first book, there will be a familiar character who makes an appearance, but no need to fear. There isn't any need to have read the first book to fully understand what is going on with these characters.

Arianne the Mistress details Arianne's life. She was first a lowly prostitute at a brothel until the man she married took an "interest" in her. While he wed her and informed her that she needed not continue sleeping with men for her life, things were never perfect. Arianne has a particular name for her husband, so you just know that no love is lost between them.

Arianne has had one particular client for a year now. She wants to know more about this mysterious man, but he has specific rules. When Arianne decides to break those rules, he makes the decision to leave and never return. However, he informs her that he has left her with a parting gift. Arianne is determined to leave behind the life she hates so much and to pursue Lord Torrent. The road ahead of her will be long and hard, but if she can make it to the end...will it all be worth it?

Arianne the Mistress is an engaging novel set in the Everclearing world. Well, not necessarily Everclearing itself as us mere humans are not allowed to visit there. The journey ahead is one that is going to be long and hard. For Arianne, due to her past "occupation", it seems to be even harder. All men see when they look at her is someone to be had. They remind her of this often. It's enough to really make you want to smack them. LOL!

I admire Arianne's fortitude and resolve throughout this book. She has no qualms about doing what she must to protect herself and those with her. She's not always successful, but that just adds to the drama of the story. One thing that you will notice in this book is that Arianne relies on one particular potion to help her get out of several problems. Have an issue? This one will definitely fix that. LOL!

The overall storyline is good, but there are some flaws within it. The author is quick to point in certain moments that particular characters won't be seen again. I feel that this pre-empts the storyline. In that particular moment, it's not necessary to point out this particular aspect. It could have waited to be revealed later on in order to drum up the tension in the story. By pointing this out too quickly it gives readers less to look forward to in hopes that maybe it will happen.

With these characters you get a HEA ending, and for more than just Arianne. Wonder who else gets a HEA moment? Well, you'll just have to read this book and find out now won't you? I enjoyed this book though and I do appreciate that there are substantial movements in time. I'm choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Wendy L. Anderson is a Colorado native and mother of two boys. She has an English Degree from Regis University and writes books, short stories and poetry. Wendy is a devout reader of the classics, fantasy, sci-fi and historical fiction. She has decided it is time to write down the fantasies from her own mind. Writing about everything from fantastical worlds to the stuff of her dreams she takes her stories along interesting paths while portraying characters and worlds she sees in her mind’s eye.
