Dead Wolf Walking

Dead Wolf Walking is the first book in Rory Miles’s new series Bad Moon Academy. This author dives back into her newly created world but brings us to the shifters instead of the vampires. Meet Raven. A young woman who has had some rough times in her young life, and so she turned to certain vices to try and cope with them. Her parents are gone, and she’s living with her Aunt Lou. She didn’t think that going for a run one evening would be a bad thing, but her whole world changes yet again when she’s bitten by a wolf. She has no idea what to expect, but being whisked away to a strange academy where she’s told that “when she’s ready she can leave” is not what she’d expect. But what is really going on with this academy? Lots of strange things are going on and nothing is really what it seems.

Dead Wolf Walking is an engaging novel from beginning to end. The author weaves an interesting story, but beware of this simple fact...this book is HEAVY on the mystery. I like the tidbit glimpses of Raven’s past and small tastes of the things that Raven has been through. I like the variety of men that surround Raven as well. They are all unique and pique my interest in their own ways. But, they each are shrouded in their own amount of mystery as well. Right now, I’d say that my favorite of the guys is Draco. Granted, I probably like him because of the darkness that surrounds him, but Carter is probably a close second. LOL! I appreciate that there are a couple of female characters that Raven interacts with as well, but when Raven is cautioned concerning one, my radar goes up...and off.

Now, my issue(s) with this book...the fact that you are literally drowning in mystery. There are just too many questions that you are left with when this book ends. You get not even five answers to the litany of questions that bombard you with this book. It’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s a good thing on the face that it keeps the reader page-turning and eager to read more in the HOPES that they’ll find the answer to certain questions that are plaguing them. The downside to all of this mystery is...it could discourage some readers at the same time. Honestly, it can be annoying to just keep having to dig through a book hoping for answers only to have more mystery dumped on top of you. Then add in the hypocrisy of Raven when she’s wanting to have a double-standard when it comes to getting information from the guys. They are bound by magic and can’t tell her things, but she’s literally hiding things from them but wants to be mad at them nonetheless.

Now, if you love a good paranormal reverse harem romance novel, then you’ll probably want to check this book out. If you are a fan of this author then you’re probably going to want to check this book out. This book has a lot of potentials and a lot going for it. I’m honestly eager to read the next book in this series, because, at the end of book one, the author promises answers to come. I honestly hope so, because there are lots of questions that demand answers, and the twist at the end really has me on the edge of my seat.

I’m choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. This book is engaging and has quite a few good elements, moments, and unique characters, however, the amount of mystery causes this book to lose a star for me. I need more than just a couple of answers to tens of questions by the end of this book. Plus, I need the double standard to be thrown out the window. I’m looking forward to when things really start to get heated between the characters, and hopefully, I won’t have to wait too long. If you enjoy paranormal romance novels and don’t mind all the mystery and the questions you’ll be left with then get this book! If you enjoy paranormal romance but aren’t too keen on tons of mystery...tread with care with this book.
