This book is an absolute page-turner, and for readers who enjoy vampire novels you're going to love the twist that the author takes in showing Evangeline what she is becoming. It's not an easy pill to swallow to one minute believe that you're sick and possibly dying from this disorder to learn a different truth. 

But wait! There's more! The author plants another character who must make an impossible choice that will impact those in both worlds. Back home, Evangeline's family is also searching for answers. You gotta love the government conspiracy wrapped up in this book. It simply adds to the drama element. 

The ending of this book will not be the end of the story, and I can't wait to find out what happens next. You just know that it's going to be something amazing.

About the Author

MTG has worked in numerous positions, mainly in managerial and executive roles. These include the editor-in-chief of a cultural magazine, an executive director, and most recently, the manager of a non-profit organization that works with immigrants and refugees. She has extensive experience working and studying abroad, including Germany, Italy, Korea, Abu Dhabi, and Pakistan; these experiences taught her about many cultures and worldviews, which influenced her writing.

Terra Nova, her first publication, is Book 1 of a series. The series’ concept emerged when she, like the protagonist, was diagnosed with the blood disorder paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), and her then-boyfriend (now husband) joked she was becoming a vampire. She currently works and resides in Canada.

I’m so excited about this one! Check out To Steal the Sun, a thrilling heist fantasy by S.M. Carter!

To Steal the Sun is THAT book that when you get it and start reading? You're going to want to shut out the rest of the world so that you can enjoy this book in peace. That's it. That's the review. 

LOL! Just kidding. There's more. To Steal the Sun by S.M. Carter is a thrilling fantasy novel that will capture you from page one and keep you coming back for more. This book is one that when you pick it up, you're not going to want to put it down. This author fully intends to come sweeping in and steal you away from the real world and drop you into a fantasy realm that will have you rooting for the characters to not just succeed, but not gets into even more trouble than they are already in. 

Prepare to meet a variety of characters. Kahli will be first. She's the assassin with blind ambition. She's suffered some "stumbles" and has lost ground in her desire to be the best. This latest assignment will be her redemption...IF she can pull it off according to the instructions she's been given. Brace yourself though because she's about to run into a ton of obstacles right off the bat. But hang in there, the drama only gets better. 

Then there is Amara aka the Nightspirit. Intrigued by her name? Good, because there is more to her than meets the eye. She's definitely a clever girl, but she's in a bit of a pinch when you meet her. Just hang in there though, she's going to have a little help getting out of it. But while her "helper" needs her to join his crew - she has other plans for her freedom. 

This book is literally the king of twists. Just when you think that things are going to go someone's way, the author says "hold my beer I got something for you." LOL! I loved it and you will too. I'm absolutely going to be stalking (respectfully of course) this author for future works because I need more from them.

When these characters decide that they're going to join together to "steal the sun" you just know that things are about to get crazy. The author is going to show you just why this job is not just a fool's errand, but the exact dangers that they will be facing, but it won't be just them who are facing danger. Anyone they care about? They will  be caught in the crosshairs as well. 

I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is a book that I will be rereading again and again. A must read for fantasy lovers.

Raik never used to plan. Now it was all he did. And he was particularly proud of this plan. If it worked, he’d have his own personal thief.

As he walked, he calculated every step along the prison path. He’d been in places like these many times over his years. They always smelled of blood, stale sweat, and piss. This time, he was a guest, but the stink didn’t care how he came to be there.

Raik followed a white-cloaked and hulking rune knight through the humid tunnel system beneath the main building. Behind him trailed a guard and the lieutenant warden of General Revard Zol Prison.

The granite corridor narrowed and twisted, an umbilical cord leading them into the womb of the structure. The lower they descended, the higher the temperature. Raik tugged at the high neck of his red cloth coat, giving his skin room to breathe. He mopped his brow with the back of his hand and scratched at his thin beard.

“This would be an ominous walk,” he said. “I mean, if not for the wonderful company.”

The rune knight turned, armor groaning under the white cloak, and hissed, “Shut it, smuggler.” His breath smelled sickly sweet, a signature of those who used runes. As a devotee of Harkan, the man’s head was “cleansed.” The roots of his hair were seared out, and where his ears would normally be, were two white scared nubs that contrasted with his bronze skin—all in homage to the knighthood’s founder. Idiots. Harkan was no one worth imitating.

Raik faked calm disinterest at the knight’s words, but inside, his repulsion grew. The knight’s appearance conjured memories he’d rather avoid, but worse, it aroused a desire to kill. Kill the knight and take the runes no doubt embedded in his sword hilt. But his rules wouldn’t allow it.

Never kill.

Never use runes lest they use you.

They were simple, and they worked.

“Pick up the pace,” the knight growled. Raik concentrated on his rules because his desires screamed the opposite. Luckily, they reached their destination before his concentration ran out. The corridor led them to a larger room dimly lit by four braziers that emphasized the darkness rather than banishing it. Each of the three walls had a wooden door reinforced with iron bands sitting in their center. Sobbing drifted from the right door while a rhythmic snapping sound akin to a thick branch breaking, overshadowed it from the left.

Raik, along with the lieutenant and guard, followed the knight to the chamber’s center. From there, he was able to see the engraved images on the doors. The old Jaru gods. A rhino head for Kartajani, a crocodile for Sorasku, and a panther for B’sashti.

“Is this—”

The lieutenant interrupted him. “Yes, the three doors of Zol do exist. One for each of the hells Kith buried the old gods in.” He snickered and spread his arms wide. “See for yourself.”

Raik resisted glaring at the man. “My lucky day.”

“Just open it,” the knight said through gritted teeth.

The lieutenant warden leaned against the entrance and unhooked a massive key ring from his belt. The multitude of keys varied in lengths and metals. He sorted through them quickly and found a smaller ring that contained only three keys, one for each of the doors of torture. Under the intense scrutiny of the rune knight’s glare, the lieutenant’s hands trembled. He dropped the ring. The keys clinked to the ground, and the guard—who was not a guard but Raik’s disguised apprentice—moved to pick them up.

Averie is turning 18, but she has no idea that her entire life is about to change. It all starts with a mysterious being who enters her room in the night. Nature itself goes quiet, but the animals are curious. What is this shadow making its way through the world? Turning to mist and entering her room. It blows something onto her while she sleeps further altering her life...she just doesn't know it yet. 

Denial is an upper YA novel that promises to take you on a journey into a fantasy world. Averie has lived a good life, though her birthdays have typically been a bit of a mess. This birthday though promises to be one for the record books. Averie thinks she's simply turning 18, going to party with her friends and return to life as usual. Well, Fate has other plans and it all starts with a new stranger entering her life...and bringing a bit of chaos.

Denial starts off pulling you into the story with intrigue and suspense. As the story progresses, the author keeps you engaged as you wonder what will happen next. Averie begins having some strange things happen to her, but she tries to play it off, but what is it really? Should she be worried about the strange feelings? Her friends are getting worried, but she brushes them off. 

Now! Enter the new guy! After Averie's wild night...well, embarrassment city is quick to follow. LOL! You're really going to like Thane. He's like a giant teddy bear when you need him to be that, and then a grizzly bear also when needed. You're going to love how he steps in and handles things just the way that they need to be handled. He also has the best sense of humor. He's going to have you laughing quite a bit throughout his scenes. He's an absolute gem of a character. 

Page by page the author lures you further into the story as Averie is told the truth about who she is. Expect there to be drama galore, but I won't complain about it. It kept me engaged as she's pushed to make a choice as to where her path will take her. There is a lot riding on her shoulders and it's understandable to want to buck against the change that someone is pushing on you.

From beginning to end this book is a real page-turner. The author makes sure to keep you engaged and coming back for more. I choose to classify this book as "upper YA" because of some of the content in this book. It's a coming of age style novel with Averie and her friends doing things that are usually reserved for adults. Yes, I know teens do all sorts of wild things, but that my reasoning stands. LOL!

By the time you finish this book you're going to be eager to dive into the rest of this series. I've already put books 2 onward on my wishlist. I'm eager to find out what happens next. 

I'm choosing to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

You probably don’t know this, but Santa is nothing more than a glorified chauffeur.

Sure, all the books and movies portray him as a jolly guy who spends Christmas Eve going around the world distributing gifts. That description isn’t far off. I mean, Mr. C. definitely has a big heart. He treats all us elves fairly, and even though he works us hard (especially once Thanksgiving hits) he isn’t a slave driver. 

Oh, yeah, me. I’m Curtis. An elf. No, I don’t have pointy ears, I’m not three feet tall, and I don’t act like a doofus. I’m right around five-foot-ten and look like your average Joe. Brown hair. Green eyes.

We do have some dwarves—you know, little people with small body trunks and short limbs. They get custom-made counters and work stations. Need a special box to sit on at meal time. No pointy ears though. Not a single one. Or two, I guess; nope. Just people who are…well, little.

The majority of us elves are normal. We have lives back in the rest of the world when we’re not doing our Quarter Force shifts, and there’s definitely variety here. Diversity, the affirmative actioners would call it. People from all over, from all walks of life, from every slice of the social strata.

They came to the Arctic Circle for the same reason I did. Working for Mr. C. became the absolute last resort we had. For me, after the plane went down… Well, let’s just say every door on all of my other relationships had slammed shut.

And, no, we’re not angels in heaven. We’re alive, holding down regular jobs back home on the Continents and using our work for Mr. C. as a way to look at ourselves in the mirror again. Except for the fact that we deliver gifts to all of the people in the entire world in a single night, we’re nothing like what the movies would have you believe.          

Like all that stuff about Mr. C. riding in a sleigh with reindeer? Please. Has anyone stopped to think about the fact that a sleigh can’t even support the weight of gifts for every single person in the world? And how are eight reindeer supposed to pull a sleigh that heavy?

Yeah, yeah, I know, the sleigh is magic, the reindeer are magic, and so is Santa Claus. Mr. C. makes the job look like magic, but as for the rest of it? I guess it makes for good box office sales during the holidays.

Mr. C. does go around the world but not in a sleigh. He uses a Concorde. Why do you think they grounded the entire fleet? Mr. C. worked a deal with the FAA and the other aviation organizations across the world. They would let him have the planes, and he would keep their workforce employed.

That part of the deal has worked out pretty well. And Hollywood didn’t get everything completely wrong. Mr. C. does use reindeer. They shuttle supplies between warehouses in the compound.

You didn’t actually think we made all those toys and wrapped everything in one building, did you?

For those assigned to the Final Quarter Force—October to December—we get to see everything come together on the back end of things, but work for Mr. C. goes year-round. Quality control of products, flight maneuver exercises, vetting of wrapping paper vendors, and paperwork. Mounds and mounds of it. The First Quarter Force deals with most of it, and Second Quarter finishes up (although Mr. C. really prefers that First Quarter get it all done.)

When I came on board eight years ago, I started as part of the First Quarter. If I’d had a choice, I would have lobbied to stay with First. But one thing you learn with Mr. C. is that you don’t get many choices. Freedom, yes. Choices, no.
